TURKEY: ONCE THE CENTER OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE, TURKEY WAS FOUNDED IN 1923 AS A SECULAR STATE WHOSE POPULATION IS OVERWHELMINGLY MUSLIM THOUGH NOT ARAB. A LONG-STANDING MEMBER OF NATO AND A CANDIDATE FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU), TURKEY HAS LOOKED TO THE WEST AS A MODEL. EXCEPT FOR BITTER WATER DISPUTES WITH SYRIA AND IRAQ, TURKEY HAS USUALLY MANAGED TO SIDESTEP REGIONAL POLITICS. WITH A DEVELOPED ECONOMY BUT LITTLE OIL, IT RELIES ON A VAST NETWORK OF MEGA DAMS FOR HYDROELECTRIC POWER AND IRRIGATION.

July 2011: The Hainan Airlines (HNA) Group sealed a deal to invest in Istanbul-based cargo carrier, (ACT) Airlines (ACC). (HNA), which has made clear that it wants to invest abroad, didn't reveal how much money it will put into (ACC) or how large its holding will be.

(ACT) (ACC) was launched in 2004 and operates a fleet of 4 A300B4F freighters. Its fleet is expected to expand to 10 airplanes in the next 2 years, aided in part by the (HNA) investment.

In October 2010, (HNA) invested in the Turkish Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) company myTECHNIC and has said it plans to increase its stake. It has been negotiating to invest in financially troubled Malev Hungarian Airlines (HGA) and has expressed interest in a stake in Germany's Hochtief Airport.

October 2011: Hong Kong-based Bravia Capital and Haikou-based (HNA) Group, parent of Hainan Airlines (HNA), said they have acquired Istanbul-based, all-cargo carrier, (ACT) Airlines (ACC).

(HNA) revealed earlier this year that it would invest in (ACT) (ACC). "The transaction represents the strategic expansion of China's global footprint into the high-growth marketplace of Turkey and surrounding regions," Bravia and (HNA) said in a joint statement.

The companies added that (ACT) Airlines "has been re-branded and will trade as myCargo Airlines (ACC)." (HNA) said (ACC) will operate under its Grand China Logistics Group.

(HNA) General Manager Cargo, Zhang Youqiang, who was appointed the new Chairman of myCargo (ACC), said that Turkey and the surrounding "region is a strategic focus for (HNA), and we hope to utilize our investments to develop a full-service logistics hub for the surrounding growth regions. (HNA)'s flagship airline, Hainan Airlines (HNA), has already begun passenger service to Istanbul, and we intend to expand our product offering in developing air cargo, shipping and tourism businesses in the area."

Yavuz Cizmeci, who had been part of (ACT) (ACC)'s previous ownership, was described by Bravia/(HNA) as myCargo (ACC)'s (CEO). He said, "We are in discussions to expand our business several fold and we have already increased fleet capacity in order to meet the growing demand. In addition, we have several large-scale initiatives planned to develop operating platforms in Europe and Africa."

(ACT)/myCargo (ACC) currently operates 6 A300-200F freighters and counts (DHL) and Lufthansa (DLH) as customers. Bravia/(HNA) said they will deliver 2 747-400F freighters ( - - SEE PHOTO - - "ACC-747-481 - 2011-10") to MyCargo (ACC) to be put into service this year. "Bravia and (HNA) have [also] committed to source and deliver up to 10 A300-600F freighters and +3 additional 747-400F freighters over the next 2 years," the companies said.

January 2012: myCargo Airlines (ACC) is the new brand of (ACT) Airlines following the acquisition of a large minority share by Hainan Airlines (HNA) and Hong Kong based investment company Bravia Capital. It has added a 1st ex-All Nippon Airways (ANA) 747-400 that has been converted to a freighter with a 2nd airplane of the same type due soon. myCargo is also planning to add 767F freighters and a 1st ex-Air Macau (MCU) A300-600RF.

March 2012: Air Macau (MCU) has retired its only freighter A300-600F, that has now been flown to Shanghai Hongqiao International (SHA) to be prepared for its next mission with Hainan Airlines (HNA) subsidiary, myCargo Airlines (ACC) in Turkey.

January 2013: (AMECO) Beijing (BEJ) completed a "C" check for 1 (ACT) Airlines (MyCargo Airlines) (ACC) 747-481BD SCF, its 1st contract from the carrier.

October 2013: 747-481F (25645, TC-ACF), ex-(N596MS), sub-leased to Saudia Cargo (SVA) in full "Saudia Cargo" colors.

August 2015: News Item A-1: Qatar Airways (QTA) has taken delivery of its 1st 747-433BCF (24998, TC-ACH), subsequently deploying the airplane on flights to Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok and Beijing Capital as of this month. ďA dedicated charter airplane will enable Qatar Airways (QTA) Cargo to satisfy growing demand from our customers for capacity in the ad-hoc charter market," (QTA) Chief Officer Cargo Ulrich Ogiermann said. "The addition of the 747-400BCF freighter will enable further flexibility, by supplementing our existing scheduled services as and when required.Ē

It is to be recalled that the 747-433BCF, wet-leased from myCargo Airlines ((IATA) Code: 9T, based at Istanbul Atatürk) (ACC), will be replaced with a nose-loading 747-400F in October this year.

(QTA) also operates 6 A330-243Fs and 8 777-2ZFs freighters on flights across the globe.

June 2016: News Item A-4: "Airbus A300 Meets a Watery End" by (ATW) Victoria Moores in "Need I say Moores" blog, June 8, 2016

A300B4-103F (CF6-50C2) (105, /80 TC-ACZ "Neopolis - Kusadasi") was sunk in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Kusadasi, Turkey to form a Coral Reef.

Turkey has deliberately sunk an old Airbus A300 in the Aegean Sea to create an artificial reef. According to various media reports, the 36-year-old aircraft was sunk on June 4 and is now sitting 75ft below the surface of the Aegean, just off the coast of Kusadasi, Turkey.

It is thought that the aircraft, which was manufactured in March 1980 did service with Olympic Airways (OLY), Finova (GRB), Farnair Europe (ASL), Channel Express (CEX), Jet2 (JT2), (ACT) Airlines, and MyCargo Airlines (ACC) in its 36-year flying career.

While the A300 isnít the 1st aircraft to take up the role as a playground for fish, coral and divers, it is apparently the largest aircraft to have been deliberately sunk for this purpose.

This adds to a long list of alternative end-of-life aircraft uses, including hotels, restaurants and alternative "glamping" accommodation.

January 2017: ACCDT: "Crash: MyCargo 747-412BCF (PW4056) (/03 TC-MCL) at Bishkek on January 16th 2017, Impacted Terrain on Go Around" by Simon Hradecky, Aviation Herald, January 16th 2017.

A MyCargo Airlines (ACC) Boeing 747-412BCF, ex-Singapore Airlines (SQH) performing flight TK-6491 from Hong Kong (China) to Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) with 4 flight crew (FC), was on final approach to Bishkek's runway 26 at 07:18L/01:18z, when the 747-412BCF went around from very low height but did not climb out to safety, impacted terrain about 1100 meters/3600 feet past the runway end and went through a couple of houses of a village. All 4 (FC) on board the 747-412BCF as well as 34 people on the ground perished (8 people on the ground received injuries and were taken to hospitals, half of them children)).

Search teams have recovered the flight data recorder (FDR) of the MyCargo Airlines (ACC)ís Boeing 747F freighter that crashed near Manas airport, the Kyrgyzstan government said. Representatives of Russiaís Interstate Aviation Committee arrived at Kyrgyzstan to decipher the information. The Ministry of Emergencies said 300 rescuers worked at the crash site, and 255 representatives of Ministry of Internal Affairs were also involved. The airplane's flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder have been sent to Moscow for analysis, the Kyrgyzstan government said.
