July 2006: Outsize-freight specialist carriers Volga-Dnepr Airlines (VDA) and Antonov Airlines (ADB), which operate a combined 17 of the 23 massive An-124s in commercial service worldwide, are teaming to launch a joint-venture (JV) marketing company aimed at streamlining management of their respective fleets. Both carriers "will continue to operate as separate and distinct," according to Volga-Dnepr, but JV Ruslan International will provide more flexibility for the airlines' often-pressed An-124s.
Volga-Dnepr (VDA), which operates 10 An-124s, and Antonov (ADB), which operates seven, conduct most of their flights on an ad hoc basis. While both airlines serve some customers under long-term contracts, the vast majority of business is responding to an urgent need to ship high volumes quickly. This means the carriers often have to scramble to find the right airplane at the right time to load odd-shaped cargo for carriage to airports all over the world, often to remote destinations.
Ruslan will allow the duo to cross-market and pick a convenient An-124 from either fleet to handle a given project. It also will include joint pools of spare parts and loading equipment.
"Joint fleet management under the Ruslan International structure will enable both airlines to reliably service the ad hoc charter market while at the same time performing their long-term commitments to corporate and government customers," Volga-Dnepr (VDA) said. The (JV) will allow "both airlines to maintain efficient pricing based upon airplane location," the carrier said.
Ownership and shareholding of the new company have not been "fully determined," but Volga-Dnepr (VDA) said the management team "will be drawn from experienced executives of both airlines."
The Ruslan International joint venture formed by Stansted-based Volga-Dnepr Airlines (VNA) and Antonov Airlines (ADB) is in response to the successful launch in February of the Ruslan Salis (strategic airlift interim solution) project, which essentially commits two An-124F freighters on standby and up to four on call to a specific customer, understood to be NATO (NAT). Salis is initially a three-year contract with a possible extension for a further year. With these two airplanes committed and other maintenance requirements, the two airlines were anxious to ensure that "the commercial market will not notice the lack of capacity," Dennis Gliznoutsa, Volga-Dnepr UK Group Commercial Director, said.
Volga-Dnepr (VDA) President, Alexey Isaikin said that "during the last three years, there has been an increase in the number of requests for guaranteed assured availability of the Antonov An-124 for government or military purposes. At the same time, commercial demand is increasing. As it is not possible to buy new airplanes, we must ensure we can optimize existing capacity." Gliznoutsa said in the long term there is a "very small and slim possibility" that the An-124 military fleets might become available for conversion to commercial use. Only 23 of the outsize and heavyweight air cargo airplanes exist and 17 are operated by the two airlines. Antonov Airlines (ADB) previously had a marketing agreement with the only other operator, Air Foyle Heavyweight (FOY), but following the end of this deal, the new fleet management company will ensure that the most efficient use can be made of the available capacity.

September 2007: Shanxi Aircraft Industry Group (SAIG), a subsidiary of AVIC II, signed a framework agreement at the Beijing Air Show with Antonov (ADB) to establish an airplane engineering center in the Chinese capital by year end. (SAIG) Managing Director, Bai Songbai said that the center will be engaged mainly in retrofits of Y8 airplanes in its initial phase.
December 2009: Ukrainian parts manufacturer Yuzhmash has delivered its third set of An-148 landing gears to Ilyushin Finance Company (IFC). Yuzhmash had delivered its previous units in August 2008 and May 2009, and expects to produce up to 50 before 2015.
September 2011: Ilyushin Finance Company (IFC) has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to finance Cubana Airlines (CUB) of three Antonov An-158s with an option for three more. A final contract is expected to be signed by the end of the year with deliveries starting in 2012. (CUB) has also ordered four slightly smaller An-148 regional jets for delivery in 2013.

April 2012: The Volga-Dnepr Group said it intends to order 20 Antonov An-124s, plus options for 20 more, from United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), according to Group Executive President, Valery Gabriel. The order, which is expected to consist of An-124-111 and An-124NG airplanes, would be valued at $4 billion; delivery would be through 2030.
The Group has participated in the continuing development of the An-124-111 since 2011. The airplane will have new avionics and an upgraded (D-18T3M) engine, which will be +2% more efficient than the (D-18T) that powers the An-124-100, the company said. The An-124NG will also be equipped with new avionics upgraded engine.
The Volga-Dnepr Group has been negotiating the An-124 order for more than five years. The group is the largest An-124 operator with 10 airplanes.
August 2012: Russia’s Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO) will deliver seven Antonov An-148s through year end, (VASO) and United Aircraft Corporation announced.
According to the manufacturer’s plan, two airplanes will be delivered to the Russian Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters; two airplanes will be delivered to the Russian president’s administration; and three airplanes will be delivered to Angara Airlines ((IATA) Code: IK). The airplanes, which the carrier will lease from Ilyushin Finance Company, have already been painted in (IK) livery for a September delivery.
Two Russian airlines already operate the An-148 airplanes. Aeroflot (ARO) subsidiary, Rossiya Airlines (SDM) has taken the delivery of six An-148s and Polyot Airlines ((IATA) Code: YQ) has taken delivery of two of the 10 is has on order. (SDM) signed a firm order for six airplanes plus six options but (SDM) will not turn options into firm orders, (ARO) (CEO), Vitaly Saveliev said in a radio interview.
September 2012: Aeroflot (ARO) appears to have shelved plans for subsidiary carrier, Rossiya (SDM) to double its Antonov An-148 fleet, following a hike in the twinjet type's catalogue price. Following the delivery of six domestically built An-148s, (SDM) had been in talks to specify technical terms, with the aim of firming up an order for a further six.
The final decision depended on endorsement from the enlarged Aeroflot (ARO) Group, into which Rossiya (SDM) was integrated in 2010. But Aeroflot (ARO) Director General, Valery Saveliev indicates that the management cannot avoid taking steep pricing into account. "From the operating standpoint, they have proven to be sound airplanes," he said. "The price (SDM) originally paid was perfectly adequate in terms of value for money. We would have considered acquiring a further six An-148s, had their price not risen sharply. Therefore, we've put a stop to that plan."
(SDM) Director, Sergey Belov says airframer (VASO) has retroactively raised prices for the An-148s already in service with (SDM). But United Aircraft argues that (VASO) has to cope with high production costs. Vice President, Alexander Tulyakov said: "There are large overheads, with heating costs alone weighing in a lot."

November 2013: Antonov (ADB) has successfully completed rough field trials at Odessa International Airport in the Ukraine with its An-148 regional jet as part of a renewed push by (ADB) and partner, Ilyushin Finance to promote the An-148 to potential customers - - SEE ATTACHED - - "ADB-2013-11 - AN-148 DEMO."
January 2014: Russia and the Ukraine have launched a feasibility study into restarting serial production of the Antonov An-124-100 Ruslan heavy-lift transport airplane. An intergovernmental agreement signed in late October followed almost ten years of negotiations and is expected to lead to a joint venture (JV) between the Antonov (ADB) and the United Aircraft Company (UAC), parent of (SSJ).
Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister, Yuri Boyko said the new build An-124s would incorporate redesigned wings, airframe and landing gear, along with modern avionics and new Motor Sich-produced (D-18T) engines. Production of the airplanes, each valued at $300 million, could start between 2015 and 2020, with Russian sources estimating a market for up to 200 new-build An-124s.
March 2014: Russia’s Voronezh Aircraft Plant will supply cubana (CUB) Cuba with Antonov An-148 regional jets (SEE ATTACHED PHOTO - - "ADB-AN-148-2014-03"), officials in the region where the factory is based said. “Today’s decision on An-148 supplies to Cuba opens a new market for us,” Alexei Gordeyev, the acting Governor of Voronezh Region said after a meeting with senior Cuban officials, including scientific advisor, Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart and the country’s ambassador to Russia, Emilio Lozada García.
Russian and Cuban authorities discussed other potential areas for increased bilateral cooperation during the meeting, including in healthcare and education.
The Voronezh Aircraft company is the region’s largest factory and one of the biggest manufacturers of passenger and cargo airplanes in the country. The factory specializes in the production of the Il-96 wide body long-haul passenger airliners and the An-148 regional jet.
In 2013, the company reported profit of +10 billion rubles/+$280 million, including earnings from Il-96 sales that reached 5 billion rubles/$140 million, and An-148 sales at around 3.2 billion rubles/$90 million.
Russia and Cuba have enjoyed close cooperation since the days of the Soviet Union. In recent years, Russia has moved to step up ties with Cuba. In December, Moscow wrote off most of Havana’s Soviet-era debt, estimated at about $30 billion, and denounced the USA trade embargo against Cuba.
August 2014: The Ukrainian Industrial Policy Ministry reported that Sergey Merenkov has been appointed as the new President of Ukraine’s state-owned Antonov (ADB), effective August 1.
Merenkov, who succeeds former President, Dmytro Kiva, previously worked on the An-140 turboprop airplane program but left the manufacturer several years ago.
In the 1990s, Antonov developed the An-124, its biggest transport airplane, as part of its fleet was modified for cargo.
Russia’s Volga-Dnepr (VDA) is the biggest An-124 commercial operator.
Currently, Antonov is working on An-140, An-148/158 and An-178 programs.

Antonov (ADB) has started flight testing its developmental An-178 with modifiued Ivchenko Progress (D-436) engines.
The high wing aircraft (a derivative of the An-148 regional airliner) conducted a first sortie with the (D-436-148FN) turbofan on February 5th.
Ground tests of the powerplant had previously been completed at a facility in Zaporozhye, Ukraine.
The (D-436-148FM)'s thrust has been uprated by +6.7% to 15,500 lb thrust (68.8kN) for the take-off phase. Another pre-production An-178 is undergoing rig-based fatigue trials at (ADB), the Ukrainian airframer's Kiev facility.
Antonov (ADB) has secured preliminary orders for 30 of the type from Saudi Arabia's military and a further 10 from Azerbaijani cargo carrier, Silk Way West Airlines (AZQ).
July 2016: "Construction begins on India’s New Regional Jet Facility"

Construction has begun on a new aircraft assembly plant in India to build an 80-seat regional commercial jet. The new facility is the result of a joint venture (JV) between India’s Reliance Defence and Ukraine’s Antonov Aircraft Corporation (ADB).
The (JV) (in which Antonov (ADB) holds 49% and the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (Reliance’s parent company) holds 51%) has established the facility at Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park at Mihan in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.
Reliance President M Matheswaran said the (JV) expects 1st orders for the Indian-sourced aircraft within 3 years, with initial aircraft delivered complete from Ukraine, while “our supplier ecosystem is put in place.”
Initial production at the 289-acre site will concentrate on assembly of the Antonov An-148 regional jet to be pitched to operators looking to service growing demand in hundreds of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India.
The (JV) expects to move from completely knocked down units to total Indian manufacture over the coming two decades.
Matheswaran said the (JV) would produce aircraft that could be marketed to both regional airline buyers and the Indian Defense Department for military cargo applications. “We expect there will be some initial off-the-shelf buying and supply to Indian airline operators [that will] show the strength and capabilities of the aircraft,” he said, and added that building to order would follow initial sales.
Reliance added it is looking beyond the Indian market for aircraft sales, and would be seeking orders from across the expanding Asian market.
November 2016: Russian heavy cargo specialist the Volga-Dnepr Group has confirmed its Ruslan International Antonov An-124-100 joint venture with Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines will end December 31, 2016.
“Volga-Dnepr Group’s business collaboration with Antonov (ADB) will continue for the technical aspects of airworthiness and flight safety support of its An-124-100 fleet,” Volga-Dnepr (VDA) said.
The joint venture was created in 2006 to jointly market the companies’ combined An-124-100 fleets, which aimed to improve availability of the ramp loading cargo aircraft.
Volga-Dnepr (VDA) owns 51% in the joint venture, while Antonov Airlines controls 49%. When the marketing company was launched, Antonov Airlines operated 7 An-124s and Volga-Dnepr (VDA) operated 10 aircraft of the type. However, later (VDA)’s fleet was increased to 12 aircraft. “As the major shareholder in Ruslan International and as the operator of the world’s largest An-124 fleet, (VDA) has the full capability to continue to support all existing customer contractual obligations,” Volga-Dnepr (VDA) said. “(VDA) is a private Group of companies. We are free to take commercial decisions that are in the best interests of our Group and our customers and this represents a new and exciting chapter for Volga-Dnepr Group as we continue to build upon the reputation we have earned for service quality and reliability >26 years,” Volga-Dnepr VP Dennis Gliznoutsa said.
“We have the advantage of the experience we gained from the end of our An-124 joint venture (JV) with HeavyLift Cargo Airlines (HVL) in 2001, and the subsequent growth of our outsize and heavyweight cargo business in the international market. We emerged from that (JV) stronger and now, 15 years later, we will do so again,” Gliznoutsa added.
April 2017: Antonov Airlines (ADB) has safely transported 3 giant compressors, on behalf of their customer Kuehne + Nagel in Norway, on 1 of its 7 AN-124-100s, from its UK base at London Stansted Airport to Incheon International Airport, Seoul, South Korea.
The UK-manufactured parts, each weighing 23 tonnes and measuring 648cm long, 284cm wide, and 358cm high, traveled in modified crates designed to work with the AN-124-100's unique on-board crane system.
Antonov (ADB) is the only airline in the world that carries an adaptor on board each of its giant aircraft, allowing it to extend the lift of its crane system by 10,000 kg, giving a final lift capacity of 30,000 kg. "By modifying the shape of the crates for this operation, we did not need to use additional ramp equipment and did not need to carry extra equipment on the aircraft," said Martin Griffiths, Commercial Manager, (ADB), who organized the charter.
"This resulted in a faster loading process and reduced costs to the customer."
(ADB) was the 1st to offer the AN-124-100 commercially and also flies the largest aircraft in the world, the AN-225, with a payload of up to 250 tonnes that holds 242 world records.
(ADB)'s Chief Pilot Dmitriy Antonov, who pilots the AN-225, flew the compressors to their new home in South Korea.
The cargo was delivered to London Stansted Airport on Monday April 3rd on a fleet of 3 Jan de Rijk Logistics trucks. "We are honored to be part of this project. It shows once again the confidence our customers have in us to transport equipment of high value that requires delicate handling," said Sebastiaan Scholte, (CEO), Jan de Rijk Logistics. "Our aerospace unit was involved in this operation, using their years of experience of complex off-size cargo. "We operate with special permits and have extensive experience in handling projects at the tarmac of London Stansted Airport."
The aircraft landed and the cargo was offloaded in Incheon, South Korea on Friday April 7, 2017.
The AN-124-100, with a payload of up to 150 tonnes, is 1 of the world's biggest aircraft.
The Antonov Company, the design and maintenance authority for the (ADB) freighter fleet, provides technical expertise for moving project and outsized cargo safely and economically around the world.
Last week, Antonov test flew a new multipurpose aircraft, the AN-132D, which is intended for operation on short and medium-haul routes.
May 2017: Antonov Airlines (ADB), a division of state-owned Antonov Company, has established offices in the USA and Hong Kong as part of ongoing expansion plans.
“Ukraine has developed excellent links with the USA as a result of an "open skies" agreement, that has granted Antonov (ADB) the freedom to operate to and from the USA without the need to obtain USA Department of Transportation (DOT) statements of authorization,” (ADB) VP Oleg Orlov said.
(ADB) recently established a new office at London Stansted Airport in the UK, and has appointed a General Sales Agent in Japan and Australia.
Antonov (ADB) also added it is working with Ukrainian and Western suppliers for its fleet modernization program. It has introduced Dunlop Tyres to a number of its airframes, including its An-124 fleet and An-225 aircraft. “The new tires enable the An-124-100M-150 aircraft to operate at their designed maximum payload of 150 tonnes, and have a much-improved lifespan, leading to lower tire cost per landing.”
(ADB) is also working with US-based companies Honeywell (SGC) for avionics, Pratt & Whitney (PRW) engine manufacturer, Dowty Propellers, and Zodiac Aerospace in addition to other Western suppliers. “Our An-124s will be flying for the next quarter of a century and we are making sure they are at the cutting edge of aviation technology and design,” Antonov Airlines (UK) Managing Director Graham Witton said.
Antonov Airlines (ADB) operates a fleet of 7 AN-124 freighters, with a payload of up to 150 tonnes, as well as the biggest aircraft in the world, the AN-225, with a payload of 250 tonnes.
