August 2003: Aloha (ALO) has 12 orders 737-700 blended winglets, which it said will save >106,000 gallons of fuel/airplane/year (based on 3,600-hour flight schedule), and will reduce the noise footprint by -6.5%.

Agreement in principle with Continental Airlines (CAL) to put blended winglets on 11 737-800'S & 11 757-200's. This includes options for additional winglets that could potentially be installed on (CAL)'s entire fleet of >200 737-700's, 737-800's & 757-200's. The order would make (CAL) the launch customer for the 757 Blended Winglet program. (CAL) will play a significant role during the certification flight testing which is scheduled to conclude with winglets installed and in service by June 2005.

December 2004: Is completing Continental Airlines (CAL) 757-200 (N67134) blended winglet installation at Tucson.

June 2005: Continental Airlines (CAL)'s 1st 757-200 equipped with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglets enters revenue service. The 8 foot 2 inch winglets reduce the amount of drag on the airplane to achieve up to -5% fuel savings, as much as -300,000 gallons per airplane per year, and give approximately +200 nautical miles of additional range. 11 of (CAL)'s 41 757-224's to be equipped with winglets this year.

November 2005: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said Virgin Express (EBA) ordered 4 737-300 Blended Winglet shipsets, the 1st of which will be installed by Sabena Technics (SAB) in December. (EBA) leases its 737s from (GECAS) (GEF) but will purchase the winglets directly.

Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said (CEO) Mike Marino resigned November 11 "to pursue other interests." The search for a replacement will begin immediately.

January 2006: China Airlines (CHI) will retrofit Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) Blended Winglets to 11 737-800s. Work at (CHI)'s Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility in Taipei will commence in March and be completed by year end.

March 2006: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) named John Reimers CEO. He most recently was Chairman & CEO of Compass Aerospace.

Excel Airways (SBE), a UK-based charter carrier will purchase 10 (APB), Blended Winglet shipsets for its fleet of 737-800s, 4 of which are leased from (ILFC) (ILF) and 6 owned jointly by (GE) Commercial Aviation Services (GEF) and the Royal Bank of Scotland. (APB) said (SBE) will save >115,000 gallons of fuel per airplane per year using the winglets.

May 2006: Sun Country Airlines (SCA) plans to retrofit 7 737-800s with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglets.

June 2006: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) named Jerome David CFO. David most recently was at (EADS) North America Defense Test & Services.

July 2006: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said Air Europa (ARE) ordered 34 Blended Winglet Systems as buyer-furnished equipment (BFE) on 737-800s scheduled to deliver between 2007 and 2014 and up to 21 additional shipsets with which to retrofit 737-800s already in service. (ARE) operates 5 Blended Winglet-equipped 737-800s. (ARE)'s parent, Globalia Mantenimiento Aeronautico, will install the retrofit winglets.

Blended Winglets provide block fuel savings of up to 5% depending on route and stage length, resulting in fuel savings for typical 737-700/737-800 operators of >100,000 gallons per airplane per year, according to (APB). Additional benefits include "reduced engine maintenance costs, improved takeoff and range performance, reduced engine emissions and reduced noise footprint on takeoff of 6.5%."

Finnair (FIN) placed 7 firm orders +2 options for (APB) Blended Winglet Systems for 757-200s. The installations, which are likely to be performed by (FIN) Technical Services in Helsinki, will begin in October and be complete by August 2007.

(APB) said Air India (AIN) Charters, a subsidiary of Air India (AIN), ordered 18 Blended Winglet shipsets to be installed on its recently ordered 737-800s, beginning in October. In addition, it has taken delivery of 4 new Blended Winglet-equipped 737-800s on lease from ILFC (ILF).

Southwest Airlines (SWA) will install (APB) Blended Winglets on up to 90 of its 737-300s. The order of 59 firm systems and 31 options follows (SWA)'s commitment in June 2003 to install Blended Winglets on all of its 737-700s. Installations are planned to begin in early 2007.

(APB) continues to rack up big sales of its Blended Winglet Systems. Following on (SWA)'s order for up to 90 737-300 shipsets, (APB) announced that American Airlines (AAL) ordered an additional 104 757 shipsets, adding to the 20 it ordered last September. Installation will be performed at (AAL)'s Tulsa Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) base.

November 2006: US Airways ((AMW)/(USA) ordered Blended Winglets for 7 757-200 airplanes, for retrofit beginning in January 2007. The 757-200s are to be Performance Enhanced with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) revolutionary patented Blended Winglet Technology, which would be utilized on scheduled Extended Twin-engine OPerationS (ETOPS) service between the USA East Coast and Europe.

On trans-Atlantic operations to and from Philadelphia, (AMW)/(USA) said, it would benefit from a 200 nautical mile Blended Winglet range boost and projected fuel savings of >1,000 gallons per round trip.

January 2007: "Air Transport World" magazine gave Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) the "Aviation Technology Achievement" award for its development of Blended Winglet Systems for the 737 and other Boeing (TBC) types, which helps airlines to manage soaring fuel costs, while improving airplane performance.

(APB) said Hainan Airlines (HNA) has committed to install winglets on up to 55 737-800s (25 firm and 30 option) from this summer.

(APB) said Turkish Airlines (THY) placed an order for 24 737-800 Blended Winglet shipsets. (THY) installed 3 sets on 737-800s in 2002. (THY) Technic will install the winglets at its Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen facility. (APB) said 57% of all the 737-800s currently in service are equipped with winglets.

(APB) announced that Shanghai Airlines (SHA) and China Eastern Airlines (CEA) have ordered Blended Winglets for airplanes purchased as part of last year's combined order for 150 737-700s/737-800s. Shanghai (SHA) is taking 13 airplanes and China Eastern (CEA) 20 through 2010. (APB) said the orders will bring to 190 the number of winglet equipped 737NGs in China. "We are realistically targeting to install winglets on every eligible airplane in China," (CEO) John Reimers said. (APB) said that "discussions continue" with Chinese carriers to launch the first retrofit winglet installation on the 737NG and 757-200.

February 2007: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said that Gol (GOT) placed an order for +27 additional Blended Winglet systems for installation on 737-800s (GOT) has on order for delivery through 2012. It already has 10 winglet equipped 737-800s in service.

(APB) said Caribbean Airlines (TTA), formerly (BWIA) (TTA), ordered 6 blended winglet retrofits for 737-800s. (APB) said that when installation is complete by October, (TTA) can expect to save 660,000 gallons of fuel annually.

April 2007: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) officially launched its 767-300ER blended winglet program, saying it has firm orders for 68 shipsets from 3 airlines on 3 continents. It expects the USA (FAA) certification in the 4th quarter of 2008. (APB) said the winglets, available for both passenger and freighter versions, are worth 350,000 gallons in annual fuel savings per airplane, a payload improvement of up to +12,000 lbs and a range increase of up to 360 nm. (APB) President & (CEO) John Reimers said he expects approximately 460 of the 575 767-300ERs currently flying, to be outfitted with winglets in 2009 to 2012.

Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) announced the sale of 12 Blended Winglet shipsets to Shandong Airlines (SHG) for its 737-800s.

May 2007: American Airlines (AAL) is the launch customer for 767-300ER blended winglets produced by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB). (AAL) will remove an airplane from service and lease it to (APB) for an 8-month flight test certification program beginning in January. It then intends to install winglets on each of its 58 767-300ERs by the middle of 2010.

Austrian Airlines (AUL) will become the 1st European operator of 767-300ER blended winglets after announcing an order for 6 retrofits, Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said. (CEO) Alfred Oetsch said (AUL) will save -1,000 tons of fuel per year per airplane, while extending range by approximately 670 km after installation, which will begin in spring 2009.

(GKN) Aerospace was selected by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) to produce blended winglets for 767-300ERs and 737-300s/737-500s. The agreement covers the supply of up to 300 767-300ER and 200 737-300/737-500 shipsets.

Shenzhen Airlines (SHZ) and Air China (BEJ) each ordered Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglet shipsets for 25 737-800s scheduled to deliver from February 2008 through 2010 (Shenzhen - (SHZ)) and from October 2007 through 2010 (Air China - (BEJ)).

June 2007: Delta Air Lines (DAL) said it plans to install Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglets on 38 737NGs, 10 757-200s and 15 767-300ERs, with options to outfit the remainder. (DAL) said it expects to realize a combined +3.5% improvement in fuel consumption and a +5% increase in range as a result.

July 2007: Sterling Airlines (STR) announced the delivery of Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglet shipsets for 7 737-700s and 1 737-800. It also has options on a further 8 and already operates 4 winglet equipped 737-800s.

September 2007: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) announced an order for 15 blended winglet shipsets for Delta Air Lines (DAL) 767-300ERs. (DAL) now plans to install winglets on 30 767-300s by early 2010, and holds options on the remainder, (APB) said.

November 2007: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) announced that Alaska Airlines (ASA) has become the 1st carrier to operate a 737-900 with blended winglets. It expects to retrofit its 737-900 fleet by late next year. Continental Airlines (CAL) and (KLM) also have ordered winglets for their 737-900s. (APB) said (EASA) certification is expected in early 2008.

February 2008: (GKN) Aerospace announced delivery of the 1st blended winglet for 737-300/737-500 airplanes ahead of schedule. In April, (GKN) finalized a multiyear agreement with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) covering the supply of 200 737-300/737-500 blended winglet sets, as well as the design and production of 300 sets of 11-inch winglets for the 767-300ER.

767-323ER (27449, N389AA), American Airlines (AAL) leased.

April 2008: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) will provide Norwegian (NWG) with 42 blended winglet systems for its new fleet of 737-800s. Delivery is scheduled from June 2009 to May 2014. (NWG) also intends to lease additional 737-800s equipped with blended winglets.

May 2008: Airbus (EDS) has teamed up with Boeing (TBC)'s winglet supplier Aviation Partners (APB) to undertake a 2nd evaluation of large winglets for the A320 family. Flight tests will begin in July on Airbus (EDS)'s A320 development airplane. "We will carry out a short flight-test program of the (APB) winglets," said A320 Program Executive VP, Alain Flourens. "We aim to take a decision whether to proceed by the end of the year." Flourens said that (EDS) will strengthen the A320's wingtips for the test with doublers, and will examine the trade-off of the weight increase against the fuel burn benefits. There is also an ongoing weight reduction program for the A320 that would help counter the strengthening, he added.

The upgrade is being studied for new-build airplanes and for in-service retrofits. Airbus (EDS) undertook 2 evaluations of winglets for the A320 in 2006 (1 designed in-house, and 1 by USA company Winglet Technology) with the target of finding "a couple of percent" performance gain. However, at the time, Airbus (EDS) could not find sufficient improvement to offset the weight increase caused by the strengthening required. As part of Airbus (EDS)'s drive to reduce fuel burn, it is planning to undertake studies of an electric taxi device using an A320. "We are looking at installing electric motors in the wheels," said Flourens. (EDS) is in discussion with an undisclosed partner, and could undertake a demonstration before the end of the year. The test would be undertaken with electrical power from the auxiliary power unit (APU). However, Flourens said that alternative power sources are being examined, such as fuel cell technology.

July 2008: All Nippon Airways (ANA) will install Airline Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglets on its 16 767-300ERs beginning April 1, 2009, as part of a 3-year plan to cut CO2 emissions. (ANA) expects to increase efficiency +5% and save -2,100 tonnes of CO2 per year per airplane.

(GKN) Aerospace said it delivered blended winglets for certification flight tests to Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) in support of their launch customer American Airlines (AAL)'s fleet of 767-300ERs.

Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said the 1st blended winglet-equipped 767-300ER flew on July 20. The airplane belonged to (AAL) and operated a ferry flight from Kansas City to San Bernardino, where it will undergo two months of certification and performance testing. The winglets measure 3.4 m and were manufactured by (GKN) Aerospace. USA (FAA) and (EASA) certification is expected in November, with revenue service beginning the following month. (APB) said it has 130 767-300ER shipset orders from 10 airlines.

September 2008: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) said it expects its 767 winglet program to be a runaway success and announced agreements to fit blended winglets on 767-300ERs operated by Air New Zealand (ANZ) and Hawaiian Airlines (HWI). (ANZ) said it will fit its 5 767-300ERs with blended winglets by the end of next year, and (HWI) said it will have 8 of the type fitted by the end of 2010. (APB) claims that winglets on 737s and 757s have saved a collective 1.2 billion gallons of fuel and 11.5 million tonnes of CO2, while reducing those types' noise footprint by -6.5%. It has sold winglets to 140 airlines and 95% of all 737NGs are fitted with them. It is working on 4 winglet concepts for the 777 and hopes to finalize a design for the 777 by December. (ANZ) is expected to be the launch customer. (ANZ) General Manager Airline Operations David Morgan said that he expects the airline to save >NZ$7.5 million/$5 million in fuel costs and 16,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, by fitting blended winglets on its 767-300ERs. The 767 fleet, which operates regional international services, will be fitted progressively from next July. The work will be carried out by (ANZ) Technical Operations.

The 767-300ER winglets are 3.4 m high and the program, launched by American Airlines (AAL), is expected to gain certification later this year. (APB) Director Sales & Marketing, Craig McCallum said the 767 winglet program has been the fastest-selling, with 141 shipsets already sold. He forecast fuel savings of -4% to -6% for medium/long-range flights, with 500-nm flights experiencing a -1.5% fuel savings. (ANZ) also has committed to fitting its entire fleet of 42 airplanes with (CCT) Systems' zonal dryers. The electrically powered dryers reduce moisture trapped in insulation between the airplane outer skin and cabin lining, lowering airplane weight. (ANZ) expects fleetwide savings of -500,000 gallons of fuel annually owing to the dryers, which are standard on the 787 and an option on the A350.

(DAE) Capital (DAZ) said it signed a deal with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) to purchase 50 blended winglet shipsets for 737-700s/-800s. Delivery will begin in 2010.

December 2008: Airbus (EDS) announced that it has launched flight testing of blended winglet "devices" developed by Aviation Partners Inc (API) on an A320. (API) supplied winglets to Boeing (TBC) for the 737 and 757 under the Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) joint venture and has launched a 767 winglet program. (EDS) said the tests and follow-up analysis will "provide data on the overall viability of the devices and help to determine whether (API)'s technology could be considered for an integrated (EDS) program." It tested 2 winglet designs in 2006, but concluded they did not deliver the necessary performance improvements.

March 2009: American Airlines (AAL) operated the 1st revenue flight with an Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglet equipped 767-300ER. (AAL) Flight 78 left Dallas/Fort Worth and arrived at London Heathrow. (AAL) plans to install winglets on each of its 58 767-300ERs by 2011, and expects to save up to -500,000 gallons of fuel per airplane each year, depending in mileage. The winglets were installed at (AAL)'s Kansas City maintenance base. (AAL)'s 124 757s and 77 737s already fly with winglets.

September 2009: (LAN) Airlines will complete installation of Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglets on its 767-300ER fleet by August 2010. "We invested $70 million on winglets for 28 passenger and 9 freighter airplanes. The winglets save about -5% in fuel burn on our airplanes and deliver 320 miles extra range," VP Business Planning & Control, Passenger Division, Ernesto Solis Grau said in Santiago. Installation will be handled during "C" maintenance checks, taking around 25 days each.

October 2009: (TIMCO) (ASC) signed a 5-year contract with Thomson Airways (TFY)/(ATZ) covering maintenance and modification on its 767-300s. The contract includes a 2-year option. In the 1st year of the program, (ASC) will install (APB) 767 winglets and new in-flight entertainment systems on the 767-300s.

B/E Aerospace and Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) signed a 3-year contract under which B/E's Consumables Management segment will support the hardware kitting requirements for approximately 250 767 winglet kits.

November 2009: Hawaiian Airlines (HWI) said it completed installation of Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) blended winglets on a 767-300. It expects to have winglets installed on 8 767s by next summer. (HWI) estimated that winglets will produce savings of 700 to - 800 gallons of fuel for every round trip between the USA West Coast and Hawaii.

July 2010: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) announced orders from both Allegiant Air (WJE) and Air China (BEJ) for blended winglets. Installations have begun for Allegiant (WJE)'s 6 shipsets of 757-200 blended winglets; delivery of Air China (BEJ)'s 30 737NG blended winglets will begin in 2011. It additionally said that Hainan Airlines (HNA) has committed to install winglets on all future 737-800 deliveries (it currently has 45 on order).

November 2011: Bill Ashworth, a former President of Goodrich Aviation Technical Services and Manager of the Federal Aviation Seattle Aircraft Certification Office is now President of Aviation Partners Boeing (APB).

December 2011: Airbus (EDS) has filed a lawsuit against Boeing (TBC) affiliate Aviation Partners (APB), seeking to invalidate (APB)’s patent on Blended Winglets.

The lawsuit, filed in the USA District Court for the Western District of Texas, claims that “in written and oral communications with Airbus (EDS), (APB) has stated repeatedly that Airbus (EDS)’s winglet design falls within the claims of the [Blended Winglets] Patent, and that Airbus (EDS) must therefore pay (APB) a royalty for its allegedly infringing design. Airbus (EDS) denies these allegations.”

According to the document, Airbus (EDS) requests the court declare the infringement claims invalid, declare the (APB) patent invalid, and award Airbus (EDS) “such other and further relief as to which it may be entitled.”

“These allegations of infringement and demands for a royalty are a significant hindrance to Airbus (EDS) and, without an early resolution, place Airbus (EDS) at a competitive disadvantage,” (EDS) said in its filing, adding, “For decades, Airbus (EDS) has been developing and marketing wing tip devices that reduce drag and improve airplane performance for various Airbus (EDS) airplanes.”

In response, (APB) Founder & (CEO) Joe Clark said his company was “surprised” by the lawsuit: “We have built and flown patented Blended Winglets on the Airbus (EDS) A320 in Toulouse. We have flown them on one of JetBlue (JBL)'s A320s using JetBlue (JBL) flight crews (FC) with excellent results achieved (a -5% fuel savings) all of this with the cooperation of Airbus (EDS). What I can tell you is that we will vigorously protect our patented technology and intellectual property.”

According to (APB), its blended winglets have been outfitted on >4,800 in-service airplanes. Its Blended Winglet patent was filed in 1993, and issued by the USA Patent & Trademark Office in 1994.

January 2012: Ethiopian Airlines (ETH) has placed an order with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) for blended winglets for its 767-300ERs (a fleet it has already begun to retire).

The order includes 3 firm and 7 options. Installation will take place at the (ETH) Addis Ababa maintenance facility and begin with 3 airplanes in February.

(ETH) (CEO) Tewolde Gebremariam said last month he expected the 767 fleet retirement to be completed in 2013. "(ETH) has made the choice of purchasing winglets for our 767s because of the enormous performance and operating value they bring,” Gebremariam said. “Specifically from our high altitude hub, the winglets will enhance our take-off performance and increase our payload and flight range, which means additional revenue for (ETH)."

In 2001, (ETH) became the 1st 737-700 operator to adopt blended winglets. (APB) said >4,600 blended winglet systems are installed with >160 airlines and estimated that they have saved airlines >2.9 billion gallons of jet fuel.

May 2012: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) has received (FAA) approval to install its blended winglets on the Boeing 767 converted freighter (767 BCF).

“Blended winglet technology installed on a Boeing 767-300ER/F/BCF reduces fuel burn by up to 500,000 gallons per airplane per year, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by >5,000 tons per year,” (APB) said.

It said the technology can also extend the range of the airplane by up to +320 nautical miles or increase the payload by up to +16,000 pounds. >4,400 blended winglets are installed on Boeing 737, 757 and 767 airplanes.

August 2012: China Southern Airlines (GUN) will equip 40 737-700 and 737-800 airplanes with blended winglets, with retrofit performed by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB). The contract represents (APB)’s largest order in its history from a Chinese airline.

"With 40 additional airplanes utilizing our technology, China Southern (GUN) can expect almost +$11 million in additional contribution to profit annually, while reducing their CO2 output by >-20,000 tonnes,” (APB) Director Sales & Marketing, Craig McCallum said.

(GUN) already operates 32 blended winglet-equipped airplanes. (APB) said approximately 5,000 blended winglet systems are in service on 737s, 757s and 767s.

September 2012: Southwest Airlines (SWA) has ordered 268 more winglet sets from Seattle-based, Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) for its 737 airplanes. (SWA)'s original order in 2003 was for 169 so-called “blended winglets” with an option for more through this year. The new order is (APB)’s largest single order in its history. (SWA) can expect the winglets to bring >-$150 million in annual fuel savings, while reducing their carbon dioxide output by >-580,000 tons a year.

(LAN) Airlines has ordered an additional 10 Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) Blended Winglet systems for 767-300ER passenger and freighter airplanes. (LAN) has already ordered 47 of the systems. "The positive fuel savings performance achieved by the Blended Winglet program on the operating (LAN) 767 fleet convinced (LAN) to continue with this program on the newly purchased 767-300s,” (LATAM) VP Fleet Projects, Justin Siegel said.

(LAN) has selected Delta (DAL) Tech Ops and Mexicana (CMA) (MRO) to perform these modifications, he said.

April 2013: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) announced that Japan Airlines (JAL)/(JAS) has ordered 6 blended winglet systems (with options) for its 767-300ERs.

July 2013: A United Airlines (UAL) 737-800, retrofitted with the new Split Scimitar winglet, launched its maiden test flight in Everett, Washington. In January, (UAL) served as the launch customer for the innovative winglet when it made a firm commitment with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) to retrofit its 737-800 fleet. In June, (UAL) announced its commitment to also retrofit its 737-900ER fleet.

October 2013: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) has booked an order from Alaska Airlines (ASA) to supply new Split Scimitar Winglet Systems for retrofit on 111 737NGs starting early 2014. The new winglets will reduce fuel consumption by -58,000 gallons a year per airplane and cut carbon dioxide emissions by -57,000 tons annually.

January 2014: Southwest Airlines (SWA) is upgrading its fleet of Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes with Split Scimitar Winglets from Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), (SWA) said on January 2nd.

(APB) developed the winglet using its existing blended winglet structure with new strengthened spars, aerodynamic scimitar tips and a large ventral strake. (FAA) certification of the new winglets is expected later this month.

"(APB) has proven to offer superior technology that performs as promised and we are excited to introduce Split Scimitar Winglets on our 737-800 airplanes in 2014," said Van de Ven.

The airline ordered 85 winglets to retrofit a fleet of 52 737-800s. Pending (FAA) certification, the fleet should be retrofitted by early 2015.

Canadian holiday travel carrier Air Transat (AIJ) is adding the Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) Split Scimitar Winglets to its fleet of Next Generation 737-800 airplanes.

The Split Scimitar Winglet combines the existing Blended Winglet structure with strengthened spars, aerodynamic scimitar tips and a large ventral strake. (APB) is anticipating (FAA) certification of the winglets within the "next several days." "The Split Scimitar Winglets will further enhance the performance of its Boeing 737-800s, yielding nearly 60,000 gallons of fuel savings and reducing emissions by nearly 565 tons per airplane per year," said Christopher Stafford, Director Sales & Marketing at (APB).

(APB) is looking to develop the Split Scimitar Winglets for the 737-700, 737-800, 737-BBJ, the structurally provisioned 737-900 and the 737-900ER.

February 2014: The (FAA) has issued a Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for the Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) Split Scimitar Winglets. (APB) received the (STC) for installation of the winglets on Boeing 737-800 airplanes. The winglets use computational fluid dynamic technology to redefine the aerodynamics of Boeing's existing Blended Winglet product.

United Airlines (UAL) is the launch customer for the Split Scimitar Winglet. "We have seen record breaking pre-certification orders on this program demonstrating the credibility our products have developed with the marketplace. Including our program launch customer, (UAL), who has now partnered with (APB) on 5 unique certification programs, we expect to see 12 airlines operating Split Scimitar Winglets in revenue service within the next couple of months," said Mike Stowell Executive VP & Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at (APB).

Aeromexico (AMX) is upgrading its commercial fleet of 737-800s with Aviation Partners Boeing's (APB) Split Scimitar Winglets. The new winglets achieved (FAA) certification in early February. (APB) says the Split Scimitar Winglets are an improvement on its existing Blended Winglet structure, adding new strengthened spars, aerodynamic scimitar tips and a large ventral strake.

(APB) estimates the winglets will save Aeromexico (AMX) >55,000 gallons of jet fuel per airplane per year. "This important structural modification will represent a significant fuel burn improvement in our rapidly growing operations," said Corneel Koster Chief Operating Officer (COO) for (AMX). "The installation of these highly innovative winglets will generate close to 170 thousand liters of annual fuel savings per airplane.

Air Transat (AIJ) introduced split scimitar winglets as part of an order placed in January with Boeing (APB). 737-8Q8 (30696, C-GTQB) is the first of four ex-Air India express (AXB) 737-8Q8s leased from (ILFC) - - SEE ATTACHED - - "APB-737-8Q8-SPLIT SCIMITAR WINGLETS." The winglets were installed by Premier Aviation in Rome, New York.

May 2014: COOPESA (COO) has performed Split Scimitar Winglet modifications on 3 Boeing 737-800s; it will perform this modification on +2 more 737-800s over the next few weeks.

October 2014: kulula.com (KUL) recently became the 1st African carrier to fit a new set of Split Scimitar Winglets on 1 of its 737-800s.

Alaska Airlines (ASA) has ordered +10 737-900ERs at an estimated total market price of more than half a billion dollars. This makes their current order status to grow to 37 737-900ERs with the rest coming over the next 3 years. (ASA) also has 37 of the new 737MAX family on order for delivery from 2018. (ASA) which has an existing fleet of 136 737s, plans to replace aging 737 Classics and to expand services out of its Seattle hub. "We're doubling down on our strength in Seattle," said Alaska Air Group (CEO) Brad Tilden. "We have a very strong franchise here. It's important that we protect what we've got." (This is a reference to (ASA)'s battle to maintain its dominance at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport against a rapid expansion by Atlanta-based airline giant, Delta Airlines (DAL).

Note: The latest passenger traffic data from the Port of Seattle, which runs the airport, suggests that so far, (ASA) is holding its own.

In August, (ASA)'s passenger traffic through Sea-Tac was up +9.4% compared with a year earlier, roughly in line with over-all traffic growth at the airport, thanks to a strong local economy. For the year through August, the hometown airline carried 51% of all the passengers passing through the airport. (DAL)'s share of Sea-Tac passenger traffic climbed to just shy of 15%, almost 2 points higher than 4 months earlier.

Delta (DAL)'s growth is affecting the market share of international carriers out of Sea-Tac more than (ASA)'s.

Year-to-date through August, United (UAL)'s passenger traffic share at the airport was down -7% compared with the previous year.

Meanwhile, (ASA) continues to grow. In 2010, (ASA) flew 114 Boeing 737s. By 2017, with some older jets being retired and the new orders deliveries coming in, the fleet should grow to 147 of the jets.

In addition to Boeing, another local company will win business from (ASA)'s order: Aviation Partners Boeing (AVP), which designs and sells new winglets for the 737. (ASA) is modifying the wingtips on its existing 737s and on the latest ones rolling out, is replacing the standard upward-sweeping winglets with the "(AVP)-designed "split scimitar" models that have parts curving both upward and downward.
The drag-reducing aerodynamics of the (AVP) winglets improve the airplanes fuel efficiency by roughly +1.5%.

February 2017: News Item A-1: Icelandair (ICE) is to undertake a modification program on its Boeing 757-200 fleet, through fitting them with Aviation Partners (APB) Boeing’s Scimitar Blended Winglets (SBW).

With 25 757-200s (plus a single 757-300) in its fleet, (ICE) the Icelandic flag carrier is the largest user of the Boeing narrow body outside North America.

The (SBW) uses existing Blended Winglet technology but adds new, aerodynamic “Scimitar” tips and a small outboard aerodynamic trailing edge wedge, which further cuts drag and increases the airplane’s efficiency. The airplanes already carry the earlier-generation Blended Winglet.

Work to fit the new aerodynamic devices has already started, with the 4th aircraft undergoing the modification and (ICE) expects to have 17 retrofitted by the start of the northern hemisphere summer season.

(ICE) Fleet Managing Director Andri Grétarsson said, “By adding the (SBW) to our 757-200 Blended Winglet fleet, we will further cut fuel consumption by >-1% on many flights, and therefore reduce emissions. This kind of technology helps us with our ongoing drive for carbon neutral growth by 2020.”

Like Nordic nations generally, environmental factors weigh heavily in Iceland. (ICE) has been rigorous in examining its flight operations to find economies, from reducing the amount of paper carried and extra water stored in the airplane’s tank, to implementing environmentally friendly airplane design updates.

September 2017: Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) has a Hainan Airlines (HNA) order to supply Split Scimitar Winglets for 36 737-800s for installation by (HNA) Technology in Haikou during routine maintenance.
