Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands
US Trust Territories
January 2006: Air Saipan (ASP) has confirmed it leased 2 757-200s from a USA airline. The airplanes are due to arrive at the Francisco Ada International Airport on February 15th and will operate flights from Saipan to Japan, Korea, Australia and other possible countries. The airline is working on obtaining an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC), so it can start its own operation.
Initially will operate charter flights linking the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) with Japan and other Asian markets, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines, plus possibly Australia.
The company has made an initial investment of $3M and is looking to become a full-fledged airline that will serve as Saipan's flag carrier. Air Saipan (ASP) was formed after Japan Airlines (JAL) discontinued its flights between Japan and the (CNMI) in October 2005, hurting the islands' tourism industry. The (CNMI) is also hoping to become a popular destination for Australian holidaymakers who have lost confidence in Bali (due to the terrorist bombings).
