BahamasAir (BAH), the National Flag Carrier of the Bahamas came about as a result of the discontinuation of service by British Airways (BAB) in 1970 and Pan American Airlines (PAA) in 1973, due to the fuel crisis. These occurrences left an unacceptable void in the Bahamian transportation industry, and thus negatively impacted the tourism industry and the lives of persons living in the Family Islands.
The Bahamas relied very heavily on tourism, so BahamasAir (BAH) was perceived to be part of the solution to the air transport problem, and as such was slated to provide essential transportation infrastructure and some insurance against the total disruption of the Tourism Industry. Thus in October 1970, (BAH) was formed under the Companies Act as a wholly owned Government entity. The Bahamian people welcomed this.

Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago is pushing the proposal to form a single, regional Caribbean airline. He has the support from several governments in the eastern Caribbean, many of whom are investors in their regional carriers. Airlines being considered for the merger include Air Jamaica (JAM), BahamasAir (BAH), (BWIA) West Indies Airways (TTA), Cayman Airways (CAY), and (LIAT), an inter-island commuter, based in Antigua.

Passengers unable to fly to Nassau on US Airways (AMW)/(USA) nonstops, take (AMW)/(USA) from its hubs to Fort Lauderdale, then (BAH) the rest of the way.
(BAH) has no desire to join an alliance, because of the complexity and costs of the Information Technology (IT) upgrades, which are needed to join, outweigh the benefits.
85% of (BAH)'s customers are Bahamian citizens. Most reservations are made over the telephone. (BAH) only receives about 15% of its bookings via the Internet, mainly from USA citizens. Sabre is (BAH)'s Computerized Reservations System (CRS).

Pilots (FC) view BahamasAir (BAH) as a career, rather than a stop en route to an opening elsewhere, and most stay until retirement at age 60. Some pilots (FC) join the airline directly out of flight school, but others build hours at other airlines first. (BAH) requires captains (FC) to have at least 1,500 hours before they move to the left seat for the 1st time. DHC-8-300 training is done at Flight Safety, Atlanta, Georgia, while 737 flight crews (FC) are trained at the Pan Am Academy in Miami.
"A" and "B" maintenance checks on 737s and DHC-8-300s are done by (BAH) in Nassau. DHC-8-300 heavy airframe and engine work is carried out at Montreal with airframe overhaul at ExcelTech Aerospace, and engines sent to Pratt & Whitney Canada (PWC). 737 airframe work is contracted to Commercial Jet in Miami.
The warm, salty environment in which (BAH)'s fleet operates, demands corrosion protection as a priority. Airframes and engines are lubricated and washed more often than the manufacturer's recommend, and fuel nozzle removal is also performed more frequently.
Fortunately, (BAH) does not have difficulties obtaining spares, when
an airplane breaks down, because a large number of vendors are located in the Miami area, less than an hour away.
In the next few years, visitors to the Bahamas will see significant changes as Nassau's Cable Beach resort complex is redeveloped, the Atlantis on nearby Paradise Island continues to expand, and an increasing number of luxury hotels open on other "family" islands.
The changes at BahamasAir (BAH) are likely to be just as exciting.

April 2012: Bahamasair (BAH) will wet-lease a 737-400 from Xtra Airways (CIN) to take over several leisure routes between the USA and Freeport International (FPO) from Vision Airlines (VIS). As of May 1, (BAH) will serve Baltimore Thurgood Marshall International (BWI), Louisville Standiford International (SDF), Raleigh/Durham International (RDU) and Richmond International (RIC) from Grand Bahama Island. Vision Airlines (VIS) is not currently selling any scheduled charter services after April 30.
May 2012: Bahamasair (BAHY) now flies from Freeport, Grand Bahama to four new USA airports.
September 2012: Bahamasair (BAH) has phased out its remaining 737-200s and now only operates 2 737-500s besides its 5 DHC-8-300s. Its 737-500s are currently mainly used on routes from Nassau to Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International (FLL), Havana José Marti International (HAV), Miami International (MIA) and Orlando International (MCO). (BAH) has also given up its leisure oriented non-stop flights from Freeport International (FPO) to USA cities with a 737-400 that it had wet-leased from Xtra Airways (CIN).
November 2013: Bahamasair (BAH) commenced operations on the 320 Km route from its Nassau (NAS) base to West Palm Beach, Florida (PBI) on November 10th. 2x-weekly schedule is offered on the route, which is (BAH)’s 4th to the USA mainland and operated using 50Y-seat DHC-8-300s. In the USA, (BAH) already operates to Fort Lauderdale and Miami (4x-weekly flights to each) and Orlando (12).
December 2013: Bahamasair (BAH) will in 2014 concentrate on building its presence in the charter flights sector. The state-owned airline says the move will also help boost the island's tourism industry. (BAH)'s Senior Manager International Sales, Woodrow Wilson, said (BAH) had in the past considered branching into the charter market but had been foiled by a lack of suitable airplanes. To remedy this, Wilson disclosed that later this month, an undisclosed 120-seater airplane will be joining (BAH) with a wet-leased 737-400 from Xtra Airways (CIN) scheduled for Summer 2014. “Group business can be very profitable, especially if you’re talking charters, because there is a cost factor involved in charters. Once we establish a charter rate, there’s a revenue base for the carrier. In addition to that, group movements fill planes. That’s revenue, and it grows from there,” he told the "Nassau Guardian." (BAH) operates an ageing fleet of 2 737-500s and 5 DHC-8-300s throughout the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the United States. Since its inception in 1973, (BAH) has been a perpetual millstone around Nassau's neck, racking up almost -USD 500 million in losses. (BAH) plans to use the 737-400 next summer to operate scheduled charter services from Freeport to Baltimore Thurgood Marshall; Birmingham, Alabama; Cincinnati International; Columbus Port Columbus, Ohio; Memphis International; Newark;, Raleigh/Durham; and Richmond International, Virginia.
BahamasAir (BAH) currently operates 7 airplanes, to 5 countries, 30 destinations on 38 routes and 47 daily flights.
May 2014: Bahamasair ((IATA) Code: UP, based at Nassau International) (BAH) has begun operating Birmingham, Alabama's 1st international services with seasonal flights to Freeport in the Bahamas. The route, which launched earlier this month using a 737-4S3 (24796, N43XA) wet-leased from Xtra Airways ((IATA) Code: XP, based at Elko) (CIN), is operated by (BAH) on behalf of VacationExpress.com and will end on August 6.
The "Birmingham Business Journal" says local officials would also like to secure nonstop flights to Germany given the presence of Mercedes in nearby Vance.
Birmingham International, Alabama which recently underwent a USD200 million renovation and upgrade exercise, currently sees service from American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), Southwest Airlines (SWA), United Airlines (UAL), and US Airways (AMW)/(USA).
BahamasAir (BAH) currently operates 9 airplanes and serves 5 countries, 31 destinations, 41 routes and 68 daily flights.
November 2014: Bahamasair (BAH) plans to seek authority to be the first airline to operate flights between the Bahamas and North America’s west coast.
August 2015: Bahamasair ((IATA) Code: UP, based at Nassau International) (BAH) has outlined its tentative Avions de Transport Régional (ATR) turboprop operational plans due to come online during the 1st quarter of next year.
(BAH), the Bahamian national carrier ordered 3 ATR 42-600s and 2 ATR 72-600s from ATR at this year's Paris Air Show to replace its ageing fleet of 5 DHC-8-300s.
According to "AirlineRoute," ATR 72 operations will commence from January 3 on wards with domestic flights between Nassau International, Freeport and Marsh Harbour, as well as flights between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale International, West Palm Beach International, Miami International, and Orlando International on the USA mainland.
For its part, ATR 42 operations are scheduled to commence from March 13 onwards with flights between Nassau, Freeport, North Eleuthera, San Salvador, Governors Harbour, Deadman's Cay, and Crooked Island domestically and West Palm Beach internationally.
November 2015: Bahamas flag carrier Bahamasair (BAH) has taken delivery of its 1st ATR 72-600 (1293, C6-BFQ) from an order for 2 70-seat ATR 72-600s and 3 50-seat ATR 42-600s at the Paris Air Show.
The new aircraft will replace (BAH)'s aging Boeing 737 fleet on regional and domestic routes.
(BAH) Chairman Valentine Grimes said, “The strong commonality between the 50-seat ATR 42s and the 70-seat ATR 72s is an important asset, as it will enable us to propose flexible capacity and optimized operating costs. The ability of the ATR aircraft to take off and land on short runways and to operate at small airfields, coupled with their most modern technologies and passenger appeal, are among the main reasons of our choice.”
