Bangladesh (People's Republic of Bangladesh), was established in 1971, it covers an area of 143,998 sq km, its population is 150 million, its capital city is Dhaka, and its official language is Bengali.

The People's Republic of Bangladesh, is located in SE Asia. It is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal, the Gangetic plains of India, and the forests of Myanmar. The country is primarily a low-lying plain of about 144,000 square kilometers, criss- crossed by innumerable brooks, streams, and rivers, including the Padma, Jamuna, Meghna, and Karnaphuli. It is a fertile, deltaic land, mostly flat except for a range of hills in the southeast. Much of the land is characterized by wooded marshland and jungle. Although Bangladesh emerged as an independent country in 1971, its history stretches back thousands of years, and it has long been known as a crossroads of history and culture. Hindus, Mongolians, Buddhists, Muslims, and Europeans have, at various times, all exerted considerable influence over the land. Today Bangladesh is a predominantly Muslim country, but one in which people of different religions and cultural backgrounds live in harmony. Agriculture predominates the Bangladesh economy. Major products include rice, jute, wheat, potato, pulse, sugarcane, tea, and tobacco. Jute, tea, seafood, and handicrafts are among the country's primary exports. The industrial sector is growing rapidly, and Bangladesh is gaining an international reputation for products such as garments and leather goods. Bangladesh's climate is subtropical, with temperatures ranging from daytime lows of 8 degrees celsius in the cool season to 40 degrees celsius in the summer. Annual rainfall ranges from 160 cm in the west to 400 cm in the northeast, with heaviest rains during the monsoon (June - September). Autumn (October - November), winter (December - February), and summer (March - May) make up the country's other seasons.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) was incorporated shortly after the country obtained its independence from Pakistan. Flights began with an ex-Air Force Douglas DC-3. The government has been seeking a strategic airline partner since 2000 and announced plans to offer 40% of (BNG) to foreign airlines, with the intention that the buyer will assume management control of the carrier.

July 2005: INCDT: DC-10-30 (46542, S2-AND) was involved in a landing incident at Chittagong-Shah Amanat International Airport and has been declared an insurance write-off (W/O). The airplane exited the right side of runway 23 after touchdown and continued over soft ground. The starboard landing gear failed and collapsed and the airplane sank a meter-deep into mud, causing severe damage to the right wing and the separation of the number 3 engine. The airplane came to rest 7,300 ft from runway 23 threshold. The weather at the time was poor, with heavy rain associated with local thunderstorm activity. The 15/201 on board were all safely evacuated.

Plans to acquire 4 777's and 6 A310's.

March 2006: Bangladesh Biman (BNG) will reduce the frequency of service from Dhaka to New York (JFK) from the current 2 DC-10 flights a week, to 1 at the end of the month. (BNG) also announced plans to reroute its flight from a stopover in Brussels to a stopover in the UK, London Heathrow and/or Manchester.

April 2006: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) is set to purchase 6 A330s and 4 777s, according to Director Marketing & Sales Mahmoodur Rahman, who was quoted in Gulf News. The Bangladesh Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism reportedly recommended a combination of Boeing and Airbus airplanes to augment an aging fleet comprising 5 DC-10-30s, 4 A310-300s and 4 F28s. Biman (BNG) also is planning to offload 61% of its shares through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), as the government wants to improve the performance of the loss-making airline, which carried 1.52 million passengers in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2005.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG), which recently moved its Dhaka - Dubai - Brussels - New York service to stop in Manchester since April 8th, has moved it back to Brussels on April 29th, because the (FAA) objected to the Manchester routing. The Brussels routing remains in effect until June 6th, however, this time, it is a technical stopover with no passengers or cargo joining in Brussels. (BNG) will temporarily discontinue services to New York, Tokyo, Paris, Frankfurt and Bangkok - Singapore, as they are not profitable.

August 2006: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) removed 5 of its 13 airplanes from service, because it cannot afford maintenance and is cutting international flights as a result, Deputy General Manager Khan Mosharraf Hossain was quoted as saying by Reuters. The airplanes: 2 DC-10s, 1 A310 and 2 F28s were sent abroad for service. (BNG) will cut frequencies on routes to Europe and Asia. It ended its New York (JFK) service last month. It is projecting a -BDT6.91 billion/-$96.3 million loss for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007. It owes BDT12 billion to Bangladesh Petroleum Corp, Reuters reported.

May 2007: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) will be privatized, according to a government announcement, cited by press reports. The move could happen as early as next month. (BNG), which employs 4,800 people, is planning significant layoffs and projecting a -BDT6.91 billion/-$97.2 million loss in the fiscal year ending June 30, according to Reuters.

February 2008: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) will announce a fleet order by March 15, according to "Reuters," which quoted airline Managing Director Dr M A Momen. (BNG) "badly need[s] airplanes," Momen said, and it will choose between an offer from Boeing (TBC) for 4 777-200s and 4 787s for delivery in the 2013 to 2017 time frame, and 4 Airbus (EDS) airplanes comprising A320s, A321s, and A330s for delivery in an unspecified time frame. It cut some international routes last year.

March 2008: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) selected Boeing (TBC) for its long-haul fleet renewal, Civil Aviation Minister, Mahbub Jamil told reporters in Dhaka, according to wide spread press reports. (BNG) will purchase 4 787-8s (for delivery in 2017) and 4 777-300ERs (2013 delivery) for $1.26 billion, Jamil said, and plans to sign a preliminary agreement and a contract by April 15. It will continue to negotiate with Airbus (EDS) for short-haul airplanes, he said, and will lease 4 777-300ERs in 2009 to 2010 and 4 787-8s in 2011 to 2012, while it awaits delivery.

June 2008: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) placed an order for 4 737-800s valued at about $320 million +2 options, bringing to 12 the number of Boeing airplanes it has ordered this year as it attempts to modernize its aging fleet. (BNG) executives were in Washington for a signing ceremony with Boeing (TBC) officials at the USA Department of Commerce to seal the 737 order and commemorate previously announced orders for 4 777-300ERs and 4 787-8s plus options on +4 more of each type. Bangladesh Minister of Civil Aviation and (BNG) Chairman, Mahbub Jamil said the orders "usher in a new era in aviation history in Bangladesh." (BNG) said its future fleet will be all-Boeing (TBC).

It now operates 4 DC-10s, 3 A310s, and 3 F-28s and considers upgrading its fleet a key component of a major restructuring initiative undertaken in the last 2 years, that has included -3,000 job cuts and downsizing domestic flying to focus on more profitable international routes. It currently connects Bangladesh with 18 countries and has agreements in place that potentially will allow it to serve 42 countries.

USA officials speaking at this ceremony, including Representative Jim McDermott (Democrat Washington), said direct flights from Los Angeles to Bangladesh are possible when (BNG) takes delivery of new airplanes in the next decade. The 777s are scheduled for delivery in 2013 and the 787s in 2017. No delivery date was set for the 737s.

(BNG) (CEO) & Managing Director, M A Momen said that (BNG) would like to explore the possibility of bringing forward deliveries if production slots open owing to financial difficulties experienced by airlines around the world. (BNG) and Boeing (TBC) are working on lease agreements for interim airplanes it can operate until it takes delivery of the ordered planes, with 4 777-300ERs by 2010 a strong possibility.

Boeing (TBC) Senior VP Sales Middle East & Africa, Marty Bentrott said Boeing and (BNG) spent 12 years discussing potential airplane purchases before this year's orders were placed. The 12 airplanes ordered represent the largest capital expenditure in the history of Bangladesh. "In coming years, we expect to add more airplanes in addition" to those already ordered, Jamil said.

The (FAA) states that a Category 2 rating "may involve a country lacking laws or regulations necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with international standards, or that its civil aviation authority does not meet international standards in one or more areas such as technical expertise, trained personnel, record keeping, or inspection procedures."

Managing Director & (CEO) Muhammad Zakiul Islam told reporters that Bangladesh (BNG) intends to resume suspended service to Delhi, Bangkok, Mumbai, and New York (JFK) by March and to launch new flights to Tripoli, Colombo, and Guangzhou. A 2nd 777-212ER, 1 A310-300 and 1 737-83N (28653, S2-AFM - - SEE PHOTO - - "BNG-737-83N 2010-01") are expected to arrive next month. All airplanes are on lease; the 2 newest from EuroAtlantic Airways (MAE) and (GECAS) (GEF), according to "Reuters." Bangladesh (BNG) currently serves 16 international and 3 domestic destinations with 4 DC-10s, 2 A320s, 2 F-28s and 2 747s. In 2008, it placed orders for 4 777-300ERs, 4 787-8s and 4 737-800s.

May 2011: (MTU) Maintenance Hannover was selected by Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) to carry out repair and overhaul services on its (CFM56-7)s under a 5-year exclusive contract.

October 2011: Boeing (TBC) has surpassed 300 deliveries of the 777-300ER airplane type, with an October 21 delivery to Biman Bangladesh (BNG). It is the 1st direct Boeing (TBC) order from (BNG). The 777-300ER has received 543 orders, as of September 30.

September 2012: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) has wet-leased 747-422 (26880, F-HSUN) from CorsairFly (COR) for this year's Hajj charter season.

October 2012: Blue Panorama Airlines (BPA) has wet-leased its 767-300ER (28111, EI-CZO) to Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG), where the airplane currently operates various scheduled services temporarily replacing (BNG)'s 2 777-300ERs currently used on Hajj charters between Bangladesh and Saudi-Arabia.

September 2013: Canada has successfully concluded an air transport agreement with Bangladesh, allowing direct scheduled air services between the two countries. The agreement provides flexibility for airlines to access all points in Canada and Bangladesh, both for passenger and all-cargo services. Airlines may also choose to offer air services by sharing space on the flights of other airlines through code sharing.

Ed Fast, Minister International Trade, said: "Our government's pro-trade plan is focused on opening new markets for Canadian businesses. Direct air service between Canada and Bangladesh will better connect our business people, students and other travelers which will help us deepen the Canada - Bangladesh partnership."

The agreement allows airlines to offer new services immediately.

With successful Site Acceptance of COMSOFT’s (AIDA)-(NG) and (CADAS) solutions complete, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) now find themselves among some of the most technologically advanced Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP)s in the region.

After a competitive tender phase, the (CAAB) elected (COMSOFT) as their preferred partner based on their long track record in the advanced and mature technology. Further motivation was the multitude of (ANSP)s already taking advantage of the German expert’s reliable and cost effective solution, noted to provide a significant reduction in maintenance costs.

Bangladesh’s 55,000 sq km are inhabited by around 150 million people, making it one of the most populous countries in the world. Bangladesh’s main and largest airport, Shah Jalal, in capital city Dhaka, acts as an international hub for the leisure and business travel of 4 million international passengers per year, on top of 1 million domestic travelers. Cities Dhaka and Chittagong are among the fastest growing cities in the world and are responsible for much of the country’s recent growth.

The central system of COMSOFT’s (AIDA-NG) and (CADAS) solutions have been installed around Shah Jalal airport in Dhaka, with additional remote airports of Chittagong and Sylhet each housing an additional (CADAS-ATS) terminal. Market-leading product (AIDA-NG) will provide central message switching and gateway services for the country, while the advanced terminal solution (CADAS) gives users and operators highly comfortable access to aeronautical information such as flight plans. The contract also includes the provision of (VSAT) connections with successful installations in Dhaka.

Air Commodore M Shafiqul Alam, Member, Operations & Planning, (CAAB) said: “We are aware of the increasing demands of air traffic volume and are concerned with maintaining safety standards. It is therefore vital for our system to be future proof, with the ability to transmit advanced data formats. By upgrading our message handling systems with COMSOFT’s (AMHS) solutions, we will bring them in line with the latest (ICAO) standards and provide a reliable and sturdy solution. ”

Bangladesh’s landscape of low lying plains, farms and rivers suffers heavy rainfall and flooding, especially during the 4 month monsoon season, therefore the ability for (AIDA-NG) to transmit (XML)-based data formats like weather information will greatly assist the country with future operational challenges. With the installation of (COMSOFT)’s message handling system (AMHS), the (CAAB) will bring themselves fully in line with the latest (ICAO) standards, while also facilitating the increase of passenger numbers and cargo through the country, essential for the country’s growth.

October 2013: Biman Bangladesh Airlines ((IATA) Code: BG, based at Dhaka) (BNG) is on course to retire its fleet of 2 DC-10-30s (46995, S2-ACP) & (48317, S2-ACR), from revenue service effective December 1. The last flight is scheduled to be Abu Dhabi Internationall to Dhaka via Chittagong. (BNG) is the last remaining civilian operator of the passenger airplanes though the United States Air Force ((IATA) Code: MC, based at Washington National) (USF) still maintains a fleet of 59. Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi national carrier has wet-leased a 767-300 (28149, JU-10111), from (MIAT) - Mongolian Airlines ((IATA) Code: OM, based at Ulaanbaatar) (MNG) for use on Hajj operations.

November 2013: From April 2014, Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) is planning to launch 2x-weekly 777-300 operations from its Dhaka hub to Birmingham in the UK, before transiting on to New York (JFK).

* Bull market: The new (BNG) service will allow citizens of these 2 mercantile cities to compare and contrast their hallmark bronze bull sculptures and see for themselves that Laurence Broderick's Birmingham Bullring Bull does tend to look a little bit friendlier and cow-like than Arturo Di Modica's Charging Bull in Wall Street.

This is significant for several reasons:

* This is the 3rd long-haul success for Birmingham Airport in recent months, following swiftly on from Air India (AIN) (launched 4x-weekly Amritsar/Delhi operations in August) and airblue (ABU) (launched 2x-weekly Islamabad/Lahore in September);

* The route has seemingly been snatched away from its UK regional airport rival, Manchester ((BNG) had served Manchester previously up until September 2012, as well as New York (JFK) up until April 2011);

* (BNG) is mooted to be looking at a Dhaka - Canada (probably Toronto) route in the next 12 months (a Bangladeshi delegation was in Canada in September), which may well be routed via Birmingham too ((BNG) is also evaluating a Los Angeles service, but this will be flown via Hong Kong);

* Birmingham will become only the 3rd UK airport to have direct flights to New York (JFK) (joining London Heathrow (LHR) and Manchester) perhaps the fact that the latter has 9x-weekly operations with American Airlines (AAL) (daily) and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) (2x-weekly) was another reason for selecting Birmingham, and therefore allowing (BNG) to avoid direct competition).

(BNG) Managing Director & (CEO) Kevin Steele stated: “The option [serving Birmingham] is better because a greater number of Bangladeshis are living in Birmingham than in Manchester and the Birmingham offer is more commercially viable than Manchester Airport’s offer.” (BNG) currently flies the only direct services between the UK and Bangladesh, offering 3x-weekly services split between Dhaka (weekly) and Sylhet (2x-weekly) from (LHR), with much of the existing market being catered for by the likes of the Middle East Big 3 (MEB3) (Emirates (EAD), Etihad Airways (EHD) and Qatar Airways (QTA)) via their respective hubs. On that basis, an additional 2x-weekly operation from Birmingham will see weekly seats to Bangladesh grow from 936 to 1,774 ((BNG)’s 777-300s are fitted with 419 seats).

The impact of the arrival of (BNG) in the UK - New York (JFK) market is going to be less marked, as there is planned to be 145 weekly flights offering >41,000 seats to the USA hub in the average week next April. If New York Newark is considered, then weekly flights increases to 246 and weekly seats to >62,000,

It should be noted that Norwegian (NWG) will start its own service to New York (JFK) from London Gatwick (LGW) on July 3rd 2014, to become the 4th UK airport to have services to this particular New York gateway. Manchester Airport will console itself with the fact that it has daily 757 operations to Charlotte with US Airways (AMW)/(USA) starting May 22nd (and Air Canada (ACN) rouge to Toronto 5x-weekly from June 26th).

December 2013: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) has resumed flights on December 9th from Dhaka (DAC) to Yangon (RGN) in Myanmar, after a gap of >7 years. The twice-weekly service (Mondays and Thursdays) on the 970 km sector will be operated by 737-800s. No other airline serves the route.

(BNG) (IATA) Code: BG, based at Dhaka) will launch 2x-weekly, Dhaka to New York (JFK) via Birmingham International flights beginning Spring 2014, (CEO) Kevin Steele has revealed. Mr Steele said Birmingham's large Bangladeshi community coupled with improved airport infrastructure rendered the route possible with Los Angeles International also due to launch within the year. “We will also return to Manchester International, our 3rd destination in the UK, and are looking at points in China like Guangzhou and Kunming Changshui in the future. Within a year, we will also introduce flights to Los Angeles,” he added. In terms of (BNG)'s fleet plans, Mr Steele said (BNG) is currently in talks to dry lease a 777-200LR for delivery in the next 6 weeks as well as 2 777-200ERs on 5–year dry leases from summer 2014. For its domestic and regional operations, (BNG) is also close to finalizing the acquisition of 2 ATR 72s. Mr Steele said his long term aim is to develop (BNG) into a world-class carrier operating routes that are not only financially sustainable, but open to future growth and development as well.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) currently operates 8 airplanes to 15 countries, 21 destinations, on 34 routes and 24 daily flights.

January 2014: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) has awarded (MTU) Maintenance an exclusive long-term maintenance and lease-engine provisioning contract covering all present and future (GE90-115B) engines on (BNG)'s 777-300ERs for 5 years.

February 2014: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) begins 2x-weekly, Dhaka - Frankfurt Boeing 777-300 service on March 31.

On February 20th, (BNG) operated the last flight of the world's last passenger McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 (48317, /88 S2-ACR "NEW ERA" to Birmingham UK, via Kuwait. With only 22 passengers, the 314-seat 3-engine jet departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

(BNG) had made special arrangements to bid farewell to the legendary workhorse. DC-10s have been the backbone of the (BNG) fleet since August 1983. "With a mix of pride and relief, we'll bid farewell to our last DC-10," (BNG) (CEO) Kevin Steele said recently.

The DC-10 logged its maiden voyage for passengers 43 years back on August 5, 1971 with an American Airlines (AAL) round trip between Los Angeles and Chicago.

(BNG) will operate 3 scenic tours a day for 3 days from February 22 in and around Birmingham after the last scheduled flight. Each flight will make room for 144 flyers. Kevin told "The Daily Star" on February 9 that tickets for the scenic flights are nearly sold out, with about an 80% LF load factor, which will be very profitable (BNG).

Birmingham was chosen to host the farewell services as it will become (BNG)’s newest international destination in the summer when it launches 2x-weekly flights to Dhaka and New York (JFK) using its brand new 777-300s. Birmingham will become only the 3rd UK airport to have direct flights to New York (JFK) and offer the only non-stop service between the UK and Bangladesh outside of London.

March 2014: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) has taken delivery of its 1st of 2 777-266ERs on lease from EgyptAir (EGP). The twinjets are (32629, SU-BGZ; 32630, SU-GBY) of which the former (S2-AHL), has now arrived in Dhaka, while the latter was still in Cairo International awaiting its ferry flight.

The 777s entry came as (BNG) plans to resume its New York (JFK) services this June.

(BNG) also operates 2 A310-300s, 2 737-800s and 4 777-300ERs to 22 destinations in Asia and Europe.

April 2014: Biman Bangladesh (BNG) offers summer, 2x-weekly, Dhaka - Frankfurt Boeing 777-300ER service.

April 2015: Bangladesh flag carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) has agreed to lease 2 Bombardier (BMB) DHC-8-Q400 NextGen turboprops from Smart Aviation Company of Cairo, Egypt.

(BNG) Managing Director & (CEO) Kyle Haywood said, “This agreement represents another important step in our growth journey and fleet modernization program, and we are confident that the Dash 8-Q400 NextGen turboprop will be a key asset in helping (BNG) offer a high level of service to Bangladesh nationals and visitors alike.”

The Dash 8-Q400 will allow (BNG) to “expand its network, connecting more passengers to key cities within Bangladesh and neighboring countries,” Bombardier Commercial Aircraft VP Sales for China & Asia-Pacific, Andy Solem said.

(BNG) The Shahjalal-based carrier also operates flights from its secondary hubs at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong and Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. (BNG) provides international passenger and cargo services to Asia and Europe, as well as major domestic routes inside Bangladesh. (BNG) has air service agreements with 42 countries and currently flies to 16 different countries.

November 2015: Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BNG) celebrated (BNG)’s 1st direct-purchased Next-Generation 737-800 as part of (BNG)’s fleet modernization plan.

As part of the 1st phase of its fleet modernization plan, (BNG) currently operates a total of 6 Boeing 777s and 2 Next-Generation 737-800s. With this delivery, (BNG) adds +1 737-800 and has 4 787 Dreamliners on order.
