Apparently Cameroon Airlines (CAM) has not renewed insurance contracts for its airplanes, many of which have maintenance problems, while salaries for Yugoslav expatriate employees have also gone unpaid. Flights were cancelled last June 2003, when (CAM) fell behind in payments to companies for airplane leases and significant delays have been reported since. Local news media indicate there is a dispute between (CAM) and the British-based Aircraft Portfolio Management, who has been auditing (CAM) since early in 2003. (CAM) has a debt of around -CFA 50 Billion/- EUR 76.2 Million.

February 2004: Is wet-leasing 2 DC-9-32's (47568; 47571) from JAT Airways (JAT) to maintain operations. Its 767-200ER is parked at Douala and the 767-300 is undergoing maintenance at Paris-Le Bourget.

April 2006: SN Brussels Airlines (DAT) and Virgin Express (EBA) announced they will merge into a single carrier with a new name and two distinct products, a basic service for price-sensitive passengers and an upgraded service for time-sensitive customers seeking greater convenience and flexibility. The new airline, expected to be in business by the start of the 2007 summer schedule, will expand its long-haul operations, most likely in North Atlantic but also in Africa, possibly through a stake in Cameroon Airlines (CAM).

November 2006: Cameroon Airlines (CAM) will migrate its legacy communications system to (SITA)'s Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network service. The five-year, $4.3 million contract is part of the carrier's effort to increase operational efficiencies as it prepares for privatization next year.

June 2009: Cameroon Transport Minister, Gounoukou Haounaye told the National Assembly that the government plans to spend CFA100 billion/$210.5 million for the "purchase of three planes from Boeing (TBC)," "Reuters" reported. The airplanes were not identified and will be placed with the new Cameroon Airlines Corporation, established to replace defunct Cameroon Airlines (CAM). "I cannot give you a precise date when the company will begin flights, but I can assure you that it will be very soon," Haounaye said, adding that a strategic partner will own 51% of the new carrier.

November 2009: New name of Cameroon Airlines is now "Camair-Co" (CAM), established by the Cameroon Airlines Corporation - - SEE PHOTO - - "CAM-767-2009-11."

March 2011: Cameroon Airlines Corporation announced that its new airline, Camair-Co (CAM), began operations with an inaugural flight from its base in Douala via the country’s capital Yaounde to Paris Charles de Gaulle using a 767-338ER (28138, TJ-CAC). (CAM), which operates under the (IATA) code QC, succeeds defunct Cameroon Airlines (CAM).

In 2009, the Cameroon government commissioned Lufthansa Consulting to advise the country on setting up the new airline. Lufthansa Technik ((DLH) (LTK) will provide line maintenance and component services for its fleet, which comprises one 767 and one 737-700 with 128 seats. (CAM) plans to serve both domestic and international destinations, including Douala to Maroua and Garoua in Cameroon. The international flight program will initially include Paris and N'Djamena in Chad. In the near future, it will expand is network with Bangui in the Central African Republic, Brazzaville in Congo, and Dakar in Senegal.

The airline named Alex Van Elk as General Manager. (CAM) has 330 staff members and has plans to employ up to 450 people.

April 2011: Lufthansa Systems (LHS) was selected by newly launched Cameroon airline Camair-Co (CAM) to supply "several" of its Information Technology (IT) solutions. It will provide its NetLine SP planning and control solution, Lido/RouteManual navigation charts, the Lido/FPLS flight planning service, the Lido/TakeOff and Lido/Landing performance modules and the Lido/(FMS) navigation data under five-year agreements.

The new Camair-Co (CAM) launched operations last month on March 27th with a fleet of 737 and 767 airplanes. The 737 is deployed on routes to Abidjan, Bangui, Brazzaville, Cotonou, Dakar, Garoua, Lagos, Libreville, Maroua, and Yaounde, while the 767-33AER will serve Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).

February 2012: Camair-Co (CAM), the new national airline of Cameroon which began operations at the end of March 2011, has launched non-stop flights from Douala (DLA) to Lyon (LYS). The new service, operated by a 737-700 in a two-class configuration, departs Douala at midnight on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and departs Lyon at 22:00 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Lyon thus becomes (CAM)’s second destination in France after Paris (CDG), which is served with four weekly flights. (CAM)’s fleet currently comprises two 737-7BDs and a single 767-33AER which is used on the Paris route.

June 2012: The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) announced three airlines and four air transport-related service providers were approved as members and partners: Camair-Co (CAM); Starbow Airlines (Ghana); and ECAir (ECA) (Republic of Congo); were approved as members, while Aero Industrial Sales (AIS), Aero Mechanical Services (FLYHT), Mercator and (IBS) Software Services were approved as partners.

July 2012: Air (CEMAC) (based at Brazzaville Maya Maya airport (BZV)) is a new joint carrier proposed by the countries that form the Communauté économique et monétaire des Etats de l’Afrique centrale (CEMAC). Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon have agreed in principle to join forces and launch the new airline next year, choosing AirFrance (AFA) as a strategic partner. The plan to set-up a joint airline had been in the works for over a decade but only seems to have come closer to reality now. It is unclear what this would mean for the national carriers of Cameroon and the Republic of Congo, Camair-Co (CAM)) and (ECAIR) - Equatorial Congo Airlines (ECA), which both have only been set-up two years ago. The Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon do not have a national carrier with international operations right now. The Air (CEMAC) plan still has to be approved by the Presidents of its member countries.

Camair-Co (CAM) has placed an order for three new MA-60 turboprops that will be delivered to the national carrier of Cameroon from September onwards to complement its 767-33A0ER and two 737-7BDs. The airplanes are mainly expected to be used on domestic and regional routes. According to statements made by (AVIC) International officials, one of the airplanes would have been given to Cameroon as a gift in return for the sale of the other two MA-60s.

October 2012: Camair-Co (CAM) is planning to shortly finalize an order for two 787-8s to be delivered in 2015. It currently operates two 737-7BDs on domestic and regional services and a single 767-33AER on long-haul services from Douala and Yaoundé Nsimalen International (NSI) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).

December 2012: Cameroon Airlines Corporation (Camair-Co) (CAM) said it is planning to order up to three 787s and three Chinese MA60 turboprops.

Camair-Co (CAM), which launched operations in March 2011, was created as the successor to Cameroon Airlines. Today it serves 12 destinations using two leased 737-700s and a purchased 767-300ER.
“We are finalizing the 787 purchase contract right now,” Camair-Co (CAM) (CEO), Alex Van Elk said at the African Airlines Association (AAA) Annual General Assembly in Johannesburg. “We already have the production line reservation for 2019 delivery. It will be two airplanes and we may add another one to that.”

The state of Cameroon is also finalizing a deal for two to three MA60 turboprops to expand (CAM)’s domestic network. The airplanes, made by China's Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation, are slated for delivery next year. “They are just doing the negotiations on the final documentation. It will be finalized any moment,” Van Elk said.

In the longer term, (CAM) is also seeking three mid-range airplanes with the Embraer (EMB) E190/E195 or the Bombardier (BMB) CSeries emerging as potential candidates. “We are not looking to be the biggest airline — we will not have a fleet of 20 - 30 airplanes. We are looking to be small and profitable. We are talking about going up to 10 airplanes, maximum, in the next couple of years,” Van Elk said.

February 2013: Camair-Co ((IATA) Code: QC, based at Douala (DLA)) (CEO), Matthijs Boertien has announced at a press conference, introducing him to the local press as Camair-Co's new Chief Executive, that the national carrier would plan to resume domestic routes to airports currently not served, when it starts taking delivery of the three MA-60s the airline has on order. Camair plans to use the airplanes to operate to Bafoussem (BFX), Bamenda (BPC), Bertoua (BTA) and and N'Gaoundéré (NGE). It currently operates two 737-700s and a single 767-300ER.

September 2013: Bordered by Nigeria to the west; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south, Cameroon sits at the heart of Central Africa. With strong historical links to France (and to a lesser extent the UK), French and English are widely spoken, but the country is also home to over >200 different linguistic groups and around 20 million people. Cameroon’s largest city of Douala (apparently the most expensive place to live in Africa) dominates air traffic, with 63% of all weekly seats, while the capital of Yaounde has 27%. The remainder of services are split across the third city of Garoua, as well as Maroua and Ngaoundere.

Looking at the top carriers operating in Cameroon, there are no surprises that the de facto national carrier Camair-Co (CAM) dominates as it controls nearly half of all flights (48%) and capacity (45%) in the Central African country. However, in the last 12 months, the biggest carriers in Cameroon have been joined at the top table by an array of new entrants. The #3 carrier is now Karinou Airlines from the Central African Republic, which has started seven international routes in the last year: — six from Douala and one from Yaounde. Joining the Bangui-based airline as top airline newcomers are Turkish Airlines (THY) and RwandAir (RWA).

December 2013: SEE ATTACHED - - "CAM-2013-12 - UPDATE A/B/C/D."

Camair-Co ((IATA) Code: QC, based at Douala) (CAM) is set to embark on a restructuring program aimed at, among other things, reducing its bloated wage bill. The news comes after (CAM)'s newly convened board held a marathon meeting on November 27, 2013 to map the way forward for the airline. Cameroon's "Le Messager" says an extensive audit of the airline's overall structure will be undertaken before any layoffs are enforced. Currently, Camair employs 520 staff and operates just two 737-700s and a single 767-300. Thereafter, Yaoundé has given a six-month deadline to see a turnaround in the loss-making airline's fortunes. Treasury reportedly subsidizes Camair-Co (CAM) to the tune of XAF8 billion/USD16.48 million per month. (CAM) could also face fresh home-turf competition in the form of Air (CEMAC) (Brazzaville) which is now set to be registered in Cameroon. A circular issued by the Economic Community of Central African States (CEMAC) says its planned new regional start-up will be registered and maintained in Cameroon. No exact launch date for Air (CEMAC) has been given.

August 2014: Camair-Co (CAM) along with Aero Contractors ((IATA) Code: NG, based at Lagos) (NIG), Arik Air ((IATA) Code :W3, baed at Lagos) (AKI), and Gambia Bird ((IATA) Code: 3G, based at Banjul) (GMQ) have been banned from offering flights connecting Cameroon and Nigeria as a result of the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus currently sweeping through West Africa.

In addition to the suspension of flights between the two countries, the Cameroonian government announced it had closed its borders with Nigeria as well. “This decision on border closure and suspension of all flights to and from Nigeria was to protect the lives of Cameroonian citizens living within and outside, from contracting ebola, as Nigeria, our main trading partner in Africa had been facing since July 20, 2014 when Patrick Sawyer sneaked into the country aboard a flight with the deadly virus,” the spokesman of the Cameroonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chiroumma Boukkari, told the (BBC)'s "Hausa" service.

Crossing points and flights would only be reopened, once Nigeria had demonstrated that it had gotten the virus under control.

The outbreak has hit three of the world's poorest countries (Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea) with the death toll now reaching over >1,200.

April 2015: Two Modern Ark 60 (MA60) airplanes painted in the livery of Cameroon Airlines Corporation (CAM) landed smoothly at Douala Air Base on April 1, 2015, bringing its (MA60) fleet size to three. The flag carrier welcomed the aircraft with a grand ceremony at the airport.

(AVIC) Aircraft, Xi'an Branch and the Republic of Cameroon celebrated the delivery of two China-made (MA60) turboprop airplanes in Xi'an on March 6.

The MA60s took off from Xi'an Yanliang Airport on the morning of March 23, and finally arrived in Cameroon's economic capital, Douala on April 1, with a stopover via Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG).

In 2011, AVIC International signed a US$116.3 million deal with Cameroon for the delivery of three (MA60) turboprop planes, the first of which was delivered in November 2012.

May 2015: (AJW) Aviation has been chosen by (CAMAIR)-CO (CAM) (Cameroon Airlines) to provide power-by-the-hour for three Boeing airplanes. (AJW) will deliver full ATA Chapter support without exemptions, providing dispatch reliability, streamlined component management, and cost savings.

December 2015: Camair-Co ((IATA) Code: QC, based at Douala) (CAM) has signed a support agreement with Boeing (TBC) Consulting wherein the American firm will help finalize a turnaround plan for (CAM), the loss-making carrier.

During the signing ceremony in Yaounde last week, (CAM) (CEO), Jean Paul Nana Sandjon said Boeing (TBC) would first assess a recovery plan that has already been devised by (CAM)'s management, modifying it where necessary. "Together we will prepare Camair-Co (CAM)'s business plan for the period 2016 - 2019," he told the "Cameroon Tribune. This document will be submitted to the Government for approval before its implementation."

The plan covers the state-backed carrier's investment needs, fleet and route requirements, and estimates of profitability among others. Boeing (TBC) personnel will also visit the Central African nation on a quarterly basis for the next year and a half to assess adherence to the plan and to assist in upgrading the airline's Information Technology (IT) and Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) infrastructure. Overall, Camair-Co (CAM) is expected to turn cash-flow positive in two-to-three years.

Having secured a XAF30 billion/USD50 million loan from Pan-African financing house, Ecobank, earlier this year, Camair-Co (CAM) set about devising a recovery plan, its third since its creation in 2011. Under the current version, (CAM) will now supplement its sole wide body jet (a 767-300(ER)) with a 777 while acquiring 737 Classics for its regional and domestic operations. The two MA-60s also feature and are expected to make their commercial debut on December 29 on flights between Douala and Yaoundé Nsimalen.

July 2016: Cameroon has agreed to recapitalize moribund national carrier Camair-Co (CAM) to the tune of XAF60 billion CFA Francs/USD101.4 million as part of a Boeing (TBC) Consulting-devised turnaround plan. Should all things pan out as expected, (CAM) will acquire up to +9 airplanes by 2020 for use in opening up flights throughout Africa, Europe, China, and the USA.
