July 2007: ACCDT: Djibouti Airlines (DJB) An-26 crashed July 23rd near Shinile, Ethiopia, killing 1 passenger (who was a pilot (FC)). There were 11 occupants (all FC) on board the cargo flight, which departed Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, and was on its way to Djibouti City, according to the Flight Safety Foundation's Aviation Safety Network. The airplane reportedly suffered engine problems (1 of its 2 engines failed at about 3,000 ft) and was attempting an emergency landing when it crashed. It was badly damaged.

January 2008: Yemenia Yemen Airways (YEM) signed an agreement with Djibouti Airlines (DJB) to help the African carrier renovate its 8 airplanes and upgrade its operation, the Yemeni government news agency reported. Djibouti Airlines (DJB) reportedly has secured financing from "a number of foreign investors," and would receive $12 million in a 1st phase.

March 2011: Djibouti Air (DJB) launched 6x-weekly, Djibouti - Dubai service.

March 2012: Djibouti Air (DJB) seems to have suspended its only scheduled services between Djibouti Ambouli Airport (JIB) and Dubai International Airport (DXB) last month.

May 2015: The government of Djibouti has selected Welsh-based aircraft services and Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) provider, Cardiff Aviation, to partner its planned new national carrier, Air Djibouti (DJB). A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the 2 parties with Chairman Aboubaker Omar Hadi acting on Air Djibouti (DJB)'s behalf and Chairman Bruce Dickinson, acting on Cardiff Aviation's behalf.

Under the agreement, Cardiff Aviation will secure and manage a European-level Air Operators Certificate (AOC).

Also intends to handle the maintenance repair & overhaul (MRO) of the (VIP) 727-191 belonging to the Government of Djibouti.

August 2015: Air Djibouti (DJB) commenced commercial operations on Monday, August 3 with cargo flights from Djibouti to Hargeisa and Mogadishu in Somalia. Operations are on-board a Fokker F 27 freighter (10448, 5Y-JUU) leased from Kenya's Astral Aviation ((IATA) Code: 8V, based at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta).

As part of its initial phase of operations, the Djiboutian national carrier will focus on regional freight flights with Juba in South Sudan and Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta in Kenya among its next destinations.

September 2015: Air Djibouti (DJB) is to reconfigure an ex-(VIP) 767-200ER for international passenger operations.

August 2016: Djibouti flag carrier, Air Djibouti (based in Djibouti) (DJB) has taken delivery of its 1st jet and passenger airplane, 737-4K5 (1854-24901, /92 9H-VVB), chartered from Cardiff Aviation affiliate, (VVB) Aviation Malta ((IATA) Code: IV, based in Malta) as it prepares to launch commercial operations.

The 737-4K5 will be used to inaugurate the start up's maiden scheduled passenger flights as well as Hajj charter operations effective August 16.

Air Djibouti (DJB) also plans to introduce 2 BAe 146-300s by mid-September and mid-October respectively, as well as a 767-216ER (23624) in December this year.

December 2016: Air Djibouti (DJB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with (AZAL) Azerbaijan Airlines ((IATA) Code: J2, based in Baku) (AHY) is to enhance cooperation between the 2 carriers in the field of cargo.

September 2017: Air Djibouti ((IATA) Code 2F, based in Djibouti) (DJB) is preparing for its next stage of growth the Chairman of technical partner, Cardiff Aviation, has revealed.

Launched in August 2015 using a Fokker 27F chartered from Astral Aviation ((IATA) Code: 8V, based at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta), Air Djibouti eventually branched into the passenger services niche using a single 737-400 chartered from (VVB) Aviation Malta.

October 2017: Ethiopian Airlines (ETH) has initiated talks with the government of Djibouti, Ethiopia's key conduit to the Red Sea, over a possible partnership with Air Djibouti (DJB).

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tewolde Gebremariam told "The Reporter" that talks have focussed on developing a joint venture between the sides with the Port of Djibouti, a major freight hub for the Horn of Africa, also of interest. “China for the first time has established a military base in neighboring Djibouti. The major political powers have big military vessels in Djibouti. The country is expanding its seaport and airport. So it can serve as the Dubai of Africa if we do the right thing together,” he said.

Since its inception, Air Djibouti (DJB) has attempted to develop both its passenger and cargo operations albeit using chartered aircraft. At present, it employs a single BAe 146-300 sourced from South Africa's Fair Aviation ((IATA) Code: 2F, based at Lanseria).
