January 2006: Spain will spend $3.5 billion over the next 14 years improving the eight airports in the Canary Islands, according to a Development Ministry statement cited by "Reuters." The enhancements will include terminal extensions, new runways and more parking.

February 2006: Futura International Airways (FUA) leased 2 737-300SFs (Special Freighters) from RPK Capital Management. The airplanes, previously operated by US Airways (USA), will be converted to freighter configuration by Pemco before being delivered to (FUA). This will be the first step by (FUA) to launch an all-cargo subsidiary, to be named "Futura Cargo" and will be based in the Canary Islands.

March 2006: Futura International Airways (FUA) has set-up "Futura Gael" (Dublin) as a subsidiary to get traffic rights for direct charter flights from Ireland to destinations outside the European Union (EU). It is also planning to add several 737Fs for cargo operations.

December 2006: FlyAnt Cargo, Futura International (FUA)'s cargo subsidiary, has contracted to lease a second 737-301SF (23743) from RPK Capital. Pemco World Air Services was contracted to convert the two 737-301's to freighters.

March 2007: Futura International Airways (FUA) will become the first European operator of the 737-900ER when it takes delivery of two next year, Commercial Director, Juan Munoz de Baena said. It also will take two 737-800s in 2009 and another in 2010. (FUA) currently operates 13 737-800s, three 737-300s and 13 737-400s. Despite the fleet expansion, it is challenged by the seasonality of the European charter business, dominated by the summer high season. To survive winter, it forged an alliance with Ryan International Airlines (RYN) of Kansas, operating one 737-300 and one 737-400 year-round for USA tour operators and sending six 737-800s to North America during the winter.

(FUA) reported a 2006 pre-tax profit of +9 million/+$11.9 million as revenue rose to 287.6 million. Its strategy this year is keyed on new subsidiaries in Chile and Germany. (FUA) Chile launched January 10 with one 737-400 operating charters throughout South America from Santiago. (FUA) Germany will launch from Leipzig on April 30 with a 737-400 using the Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) from Cirrus Airlines (RUS), Munoz de Baena said. The company transports around 3 million passengers yearly. Charters comprise 65% its business and (ACMI) wet-leases the remainder, with customers including Jet2.com (JT2), Jetairfly (TUB), Arkefly (HOL), and Binter Canarias (BIC).

737-86N (28592, EI-DJT), returned from (RYN).

December 2007: 737-8FH (29671, EI-DMZ), leased to Garuda (GIA).

April 2008: 2 737-86Ns (28592, 28624), returned from Ryan International (RYN). 737-96NER (35223, EC-KQQ), (GEF) leased.

May 2008: Futura International Airways (FUA) took delivery of two 737-96NERs (35225, EC-KQR). The airplanes are powered by (CFM56-7B)s and are leased from (GECAS) (GEF). (FUA) is the first European airline to operate the 737-900ER.

September 2008: Futura International Airways (FUA) suspended flights for 24 hours as it sought bankruptcy protection, the Spanish Infrastructure Ministry confirmed, but the carrier intended to restart operations. The ministry said it asked (FUA) to present information on its financial situation, a plan for reorganization, and guarantees on the security of its flight operations, in order to determine whether it could retain its operating license.

The Spanish (CAA) will open an inquiry to verify whether (FUA) respected its legal obligations to passengers as a result of its "unilateral" decision to suspend operations.

According to the airline's website, (FUA)s fleet comprised 38 737s last year. (FUA) added two 737-900ERs this year. Revenue was +327 million/+$466.4 million in 2007 and it carried 3.7 million passengers. (FUA) operates charter flights and leases out several airplanes to other tour operators and charter carriers. It was founded in 1989, with the participation of Aer Lingus (ARL), which sold off its majority stake in 2002 and its remaining 20% last October.

(FUA)'s Dublin-based subsidiary Futura Gael said it had suspended operations for an undetermined period. The Irish (CAA) has revoked its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC).

The Spanish civil aviation authority suspended the operating license of (FUA), according to press reports. The license could be reactivated if (FUA) finds an investor to finance its restructuring plan before January 1. The charter carrier suspended operations two weeks ago and filed for bankruptcy protection.
