April 2014: The Yunnan Hongtu Airlines Company Ltd founded a domestic airline branded as Hongtu Airlines in Yunnan Province.
July 2015: China’s new start-up Yunnan's Hongtu Airlines (HTU) plans to launch its inaugural flight in October 2015 to explore the lucrative Yunnan tourism market.
According to Chairman, Tang Longcheng, the new carrier will initially operate 3 Airbus A320/A321s, the 1st of which (an A321-200) is scheduled to be delivered in October. The new Kunming-based venture is expected to face fierce competition, as there are 5 domestic carriers (predominantly China Eastern Airlines (CEA)) that operate out of Kunming.
The new entity has a registered capital of CNY600 million/$98 million, in which the Kunming Changqing Financing Guarantee Company holds a 30% stake; local entrepreneur Tang Longcheng (who became the airline's Chairman) holds a 20% stake, and Yunnan Huhutong Network Technology Company, Yunnan Defeng Logistics Company, Yunnan Mingtong Logistics Company, Kunming Dongyun Ticket Agency, Kunming Deben Trade Company each hold a 10% stake, respectively.

Hongtu Airlines (HTU), a start-up carrier based in SW China's Yunnan Province, held its 1st ever recruitment drive for cabin crew (Flight Crew (FC) and Cabin Attendants (CA)) at Kunming Wujiaba International Airport on July 17, 2015, marking an important step toward its inaugural flight planned in October 2015.
December 2015: The airplane's livery uses a mainly red color representing the famous red earth of the Dongchuan District in Yunnan Province. The airline's Hongtu name translates to "red soil."
Hongtu Airlines took delivery of its 1st airplane an A321-200 originally destined for UTAir Aviation in Russia. It was named "Dai" after the Dai people, who are an ethnic minority in the Yunnan Province. The inaugural flight was Kunming to Nanchang
June 2016: Hongtu Airlines (HTU) A320-214 (5209, B-8432), ex-(EI-DSV) was ferried Abu Dhabi to Guangzhou.
August 2016: A320-214 (5209, B-8432), Bohai Leasing leased, ferried Guangzhou to Kunming for Hongtu Airlines (HTU).
