Hungary was established in 1001, covers an area of 93,033 sq km, its population is 10.6 million, its capital city is Budapest, and its official language is Hungarian.
July 2013: A new Hungarian airline is hoping to fill the gap in the market left by the collapse of the countryís national flag carrier Malev (HGA) last year. Called Solyom (which is "falcon" in English) it launches charter flights from next month, with scheduled flights beginning in October.
The start-up plans to fly to 22 destinations, including six European capitals, using six leased 737-500 planes. The owners said they have financial backing from Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but industry observers believe the newcomer will have a tough job in the highly competitive market.
Airlines including Wizz Air (WZZ) and Ryanair (RYR) have already picked up some of Malev (HGA)ís routes and destinations from Budapest. Aviation expert, Gabor G Varga said: ďThe biggest question is who will travel with this airline, and not specifically with Solyom but who will travel with any Hungarian airline?
After the bankruptcy of Malev (HGA) in February 2012, the low cost carriers (LCC)s and the big international companies have allegedly filled up the market. Whether this is really so, will become clear now. At the same time, itís a big question whether the Hungarian market can be a basis for a successful premium airline from Budapest.Ē European airlines have been hit hard during the eurozone debt crisis. They have had to slash costs in the face of higher fuel charges and competition from low cost rivals.
(HUN) expects to have 12 737-500s by year end and 50 airplanes by 2017. (HUN) is expected to launch charter flights from early September and scheduled flights from early October.
August 2013: Solyom Hungaian Airlines (HUN) is a Hungaian airline established in 2013. It has its head office in Budapest at Liszt Ferenc International Airport. The airline was founded after Malev Hungarian Airlines, the former flag carrier of Hungary, ceased operations in February 2012.

October 2013: Budapest start-up Solyom Hungarian Airways (HUN), which was due to launch 737-500 charter flights from early September and scheduled flights from early October, went to insolvency before it was able to start operations.
According to several Hungarian media outlets, (HUN) never received an air operatorís certificate (AOC) and talks with potential investors, especially from Oman, collapsed. (HUN)ís management has reportedly disappeared. It had plans to have 12 737-500s by year end and 50 airplanes by 2017.
Founder, Jozsef Vago had hoped to recover lost business after Malev Hungarian Airlines (HGA) ceased operations in February 2012.
