THE BAHAMAS CONSIST OF MORE THAN >700 ISLANDS STRETCHING ACROSS 650 MILES/1,050 KM OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ISLANDS IN THE WEST INDIES IS PARADISE ISLAND, HOME OF THE ATLANTIS MEGA-RESORT. BECAUSE OF THE MILES OF SANDY BEACHES, WARM GENTLE BREEZES, COBALT-BLUE WATERS, AND FRIENDLY INHABITANTS, MANY PEOPLE FEEL THE WORD "PARADISE" APPLIES TO THE ENTIRE BAHAMIAN CHAIN, NOT ONE ISLAND. AND FOR 35 YEARS, BAHAMASAIR (BAH) HAS BEEN KEEPING THIS PARADISE TOGETHER.

THE BAHAMAS (THE COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS) WERE ESTABLISHED IN 1973, COVER AN AREA OF 13,878 SQ KM, HAVE A POPULATION OF 0.3 MILLION, THE CAPITAL CITY IS NASSAU, AND THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE IS ENGLISH.

February 2006: Freddie Laker, a pioneer of the modern airline industry, died in Miami, at the age of 83.

Known for his role in revolutionizing air travel, Sir Freddie was knighted in 1978 for his contribution to aviation and Britain's economy.

Aviator, showman, entrepreneur and populist, Laker briefly shook up the transatlantic established order with his Skytrain service before going bust as a result of his own mistakes, a ruthless and even illegal response by incumbent competitors, fallout from the DC-10 grounding and the global recession of the early 1980s.

Sir Freddie Laker launched his Skytrain service in 1977.

He came up with the idea of a no-reservation, low-cost service and forged the way for the no-frills airlines used by millions today.

In 1977 he launched the Laker Skytrain, Britain's first all-jet air carrier, which flew between London and New York for as little as £118.

It won huge public support, attracting more than two million passengers before going bust in 1982.

He forced the big airlines to lower their fares and a court hearing decided they had used illegal price pressure to put Skytrain out of business. By then, Sir Freddie was an icon of free enterprise and embraced by the nation as an underdog. The public donated more than a million pounds to help keep his business afloat.

He once said: "You can say what you like about Margaret Thatcher, but I was her icon when she was talking about competition.

"She would say 'Look at Laker Airways (LAK), competition pays.' But of course as soon as the heat was put on, she got me kicked out."

Sir Richard Branson said last night: "Sir Freddie was a father figure to me." The Virgin (VAA) boss named one of (VAA)'s airplanes "The Spirit of Sir Freddie."

Sir Freddie lived on Fisher Island, which has the world's highest percentage of millionaires per square mile.
