September 2003: The government states Olympic (OLY) will be restructured and reborn as a streamlined, debt-free Olympic Airlines (OLY). It will take off with a share capital of EUR 140 million/$152.9 million. Transport Minister, Christos Verelis, expects the new company to be "viable" in its 1st year of operations. The revamp would entail the consolidation of Olympic Airways (OLY), Olympic Aviation (OLA), & Macedonian Airlines (MDA) into a single entity that would employ 1,850 staff and be engaged solely in the core business over its current international and domestic network. Labor costs for the new (OLY) would decline by -45% by virtue of spinning off cargo activities, ground operations, and technical services to the remnants of the former Olympic Airways (OLY), who employed 5,000. Potential buyers are being sought for 51% of the airline. The carrier's accumulated debt reached EUR 512 million/$562.1 million according to its 2002 report.

December 2003: The new Olympic Airlines (OLY) is the integration of the Flight Operations division of Olympic Airways with Olympic Aviation (OLA) and Macedonian Airlines (MDA). Its new fleet consists of 3 717's, 17 737's, 3 A300's, 4 A340-300's, 13 ATR 42/ATR 72's, and 4 Dash 8's.

May 2004: 737-42J (27143) wet-leased to Olympic Airlines (OLY).

December 2014: Macedonia’s government is looking at creating a new national airline for the Balkan state, an operator to succeed defunct flag-carrier (MAT).

The Macedonian transport ministry is seeking, through a public tender, assistance on a feasibility study for the project.

It states that the tender covers preparation of a study “on the possibility for setting up, or establishment of a national air carrier”.

Half the value of the contract will be linked to an initial phase comprising a detailed analysis of the air transport market (examining demand, route options, and competition from other airlines) as well as the financial sustainability of a new airline.

“The analysis shall indicate the existence of an actual economic and financial justification for establishment or setting up of a national air carrier in the Republic of Macedonia,” the tender states.

It adds that the balance of the contract will cover analysis of the fleet structure, wet-lease of aircraft and options for the business model, including partnerships and alliances.

Macedonia’s transport ministry has set a deadline of December 29 for interested parties to participate.
