Lebanon (Republic of Lebanon) was established in 1918, it covers an area of 83,856 sq km, its capital city is Beirut, and its official language is Arabic.

The first operations were between Beirut and Nicosia. Pan Am acquired a stake and a management contract in September 1949, which was replaced in 1955 by British Overseas Air Corporation (BOAC) with a 49% stake. The association with (BOAC) was terminated in August 1961. In June 1963, (MEA) merged with Air Liban, giving Air France (AFA) a 30% shareholding, since relinquished. The full name was then Middle East Airlines Air Liban. In the same year it also took over Lebanese International Airways. The company's present name was adopted in November 1965. Operations were temporarily transferred to Amman, Damascus, and Larnaca, during the Israeli attacks in July and August 2006.

March 2003: Hamdi Chaouk, Director General of Lebanon Civil Aviation, stated that commercial aviation is rebounding in Lebanon, as the nation has embraced "open skies" and reaped its benefits. Middle East Airlines (MEA) made a +5% profit in 2002, in spite of intense competition on key routes, including Beirut - Dubai, which is served by 11 airlines, but (MEA) sustained no loss of passengers during 2002. (MEA) has been restructured after a partial subsidy from the government. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aided in revamping the civil aviation directorate with focus on improving oversight of safety and security. Beirut International Airport is a candidate for privatization, which could be concluded in 6 months. The changes are improving opportunities for torrorism to this once war-ravaged nation.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) Cargo switches from Lufthansa Cargo (LUB) to Middle East Airlines (MEA) and Emirates (EAD) SkyCargo to support its cargo services for Gothenburg to Hong Kong (747-400F, 2/week).

October 2005: Turkey impounded a Middle East Airlines (MEA) A321 at Istanbul last week Friday to pressure Lebanon to pay a $7 million debt. A Turkish court order banned flight ME266 bound for Beirut from leaving Istanbul. The German firm Velter-Bau sought the order over payment for a road project in north Lebanon a few years ago.

December 2005: Middle East Airlines (MEA) and Syrian Arab Airlines (SYR) are in the market for new lift. According to the Arab Air Carriers Organization, (MEA) is planning to add a new airplane to its fleet in 2007 and one in 2008. In addition, it is evaluating the possibility of operating 50/70-seat regional airplanes. It expects to achieve a $40 million net profit for 2005 after earning $50 million net profit in 2004 and is planning to float 10% - 20% its shares on the Beirut Bourse next year. Syrian (SYR), meanwhile, is expected to finalize an order for three A330s and four A321s as early as year end. It is phasing out its 727 and two 747SPs, which have been in service almost 30 years.

Syrian Arab Airlines (SYR) said its planned Regional carrier joint venture with Middle East Airlines (MEA) should be ready to launch service in the second quarter of next year. The new airline, Phoenician Express (PHE), initially will operate a pair of 50/70-seat airplanes on a network based out of Damascus and Beirut. The two carriers jointly will own 50% (25% each) of (PHE) and the other half will be owned by private investors. The airline will serve domestic destinations in Syria and international routes to countries including Jordan, Cyprus, Turkey and Egypt.

January 2006: The SkyTeam (STM) alliance has approved the application of Lebanon’s national air carrier, Middle East Airlines (MEA), Air Liban, in its Associate Airlines program. (MEA) joins Air Europa (ARE), Copa Airlines (COP), Kenya Airways (KEN), and Tarom (TRM) as Associate Airline candidates and is on course to become SkyTeam (STM)'s first carrier from the Middle East. Rival alliance Oneworld (ONW) is set to admit Royal Jordanian (RJA).

Delta Air Lines (DAL) announced today that the SkyTeam (STM) Governing Board supports the (MEA)’s interest in the program. SkyTeam (STM) Associate Airlines adhere to key alliance customer programs, including frequent flyer reciprocity, lounge access and code share agreements.

Air France (AFA) will serve as the airline's sponsor during the joining process, with completion expected within the next 15 months. SkyTeam (STM) is the global airline alliance partnering nine members, including Aeromexico (AMX), Air France (AFA), Alitalia (ALI), Continental Airlines (CAL), (CSA) Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines (DAL), (KLM) Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air (KAL), and Northwest Airlines (NWA).

Middle East Airlines (MEA), which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, serves 1.2 million passengers annually. With a modern fleet of three A330-200's and six A321-200 airplanes, the airline flies to 26 destinations in 17 countries, serving cities in Europe, the Middle East, Gulf States and Africa, expanding SkyTeam (STM)'s reach to new destinations like Dhahran and Sharm el Sheikh. It is expected to meet SkyTeam standards in 2007.

Middle East Airlines (MEA) appointed Naima Kassir as manager for the UK and Ireland.

March 2006: (IATA) reported that the world's airlines continued their momentum into the new year as international passenger traffic rose +6.2% (RPK)'s in January while airfreight grew +5.3% (FTK)'s, suggesting that the world economy may be heating up after last year's second-half slowdown in (FTK)s. Total passenger capacity climbed +4.6% and load factor was 74.6% LF. Cargo capacity kept pace with the rise in traffic with (ATK)s up +5.2%.

Strongest (RPK) growth was recorded by Middle East airlines (MEA), up +18.3% on an +11.7% rise in (ASK)s. African carriers' (RPK)s increased +7.4% on a +10% hike in capacity, while Asia/Pacific airlines saw a +6.4% gain in traffic against a +4.3% lift in (ASK)s. European carriers' (RPK)s rose +5.2% with (ASK)s up +3.6%, while North American carriers enjoyed a +3.6% growth in international (RPK)s against a +3.8% rise in (ASK)s. Latin American traffic was up just +2.8% but capacity was held in check, up +2.2%. Strongest freight traffic occurred in the Middle East, up +9.4%, followed by Africa, up +9%.

Six Arab carriers signed an agreement in late January to form Arabesk Group, a consortium "designed to help members realize better commercial potential," according to Arab Air Carriers Organization Secretary General, Abdul Wahab Teffaha. Initial members are EgyptAir (EGP), Gulf Air (GUL), Middle East Airlines (MEA), Royal Jordanian (RJA), Saudi Arabian Airlines (SVA), and Yemenia Yemen Airways (YEM). The group said Tunisair (TUN) likely will join soon. Formation of the entity was discussed last summer. "The cooperation is already yielding benefits for the individual carriers and is demonstrating that this is a good path for the future, as well as providing value-added service to travelers through better market coverage," Teffaha said. The airlines will cooperate on scheduling, operate codeshare flights and have special prorate agreements during the summer schedule period. Sabre Airlines Solutions consulted on the formation of Arabesk.

(MEA) will increase frequency on its Beirut to Frankfurt route from 3 to 4 flights a week from March 26th. To the current Tuesdays, Fridays, & Sundays flights, the airline will add a new Thursdays flight, all operated with an A321. (MEA) will increase frequency on its Beirut to Riyadh route from 5 to 6 flights a week from March 26th. To the current daily, except Tuesdays & Saturdays flights, the airline will add a new Tuesdays flight. In addition, the airline will upgrade the A321 used on Wednesdays, & Fridays to an A330-200. (MEA) will increase frequency on its Beirut to Larnaca route from 5 to 7 flights a week from March 26th. The daily service will be operated with an A321. Middle East Airlines (MEA) will increase its Beirut - London Heathrow frequency from five-times-weekly to daily, from June 2.

Beirut International Airport was closed to air traffic indefinitely following yesterday's bombing by Israeli fighter jets in response to a Hezbollah raid from Lebanon into northern Israel. Two runways reportedly sustained heavy damage. Airlines throughout the region cancelled flights to Lebanon's capital and Lebanese carrier Middle East Airlines (MEA) reportedly diverted planes to Cyprus.

Later, Middle East Airlines (MEA) resumed Damascus service in an effort to evacuate people stranded in Syria as a result of the hostilities in Lebanon, which have closed Beirut Rafik Hariri Airport (BEY). (MEA) initially moved its nine Airbus airplanes to Jordan and Cyprus after (BEY) was bombed on July 13. It said it will fly to Frankfurt, Riyadh, Paris, Jeddah, Kuwait City and Dubai after securing permission from the Syrian government to use Damascus International. It added that it "hope[s] to resume flights from Beirut once the fighting ends."

August 2006: Middle East Airlines (MEA) operated an Amman - Beirut A321-200 flight carrying 149 passengers yesterday, the first commercial flight to arrive at Rafik Hariri International Airport in 36 days and signaling at least a partial lifting of Israel's air blockade of Lebanon. Royal Jordanian (RJA) also operated an Amman - Beirut flight yesterday. (MEA) Chairman, Mohammed Hout and Lebanon Transportation Minister Mohammed Safadi said Israel has agreed to allow limited flights from Jordan, according to press reports from Beirut. The Lebanese flag carrier relocated its six A321-200s and three A330-200s to Damascus during the recent Israel - Hezbollah war.

September 2006: The Israeli government lifted the air and sea blockade of Lebanon, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's office. International forces will monitor the airports and coastline. Several airlines, including Qatar Airways (QTA), Gulf Air (GUL), and British Airways (BAB), had expressed concern over the lack of access to Beirut and declared their intentions to fly there despite restrictions.

October 2006: Middle East Airlines (MEA) announced a -82% decrease in its forecast profit to +$10 million, due to the war in Lebanon during July and August, which usually is its most profitable season, the Arab Air Carriers Organization is reporting. (MEA)'s losses reached -$45 million during that period.

November 2006: Middle East Airlines (MEA) is finalizing an agreement to acquire four A319S and four A330-200s. According to the Arab Air Carriers Organization, two airplanes would arrive in 2008 and the other six in 2009. (MEA) would use the additional airplanes to increase frequencies on popular routes and is considering new destinations in Qatar, Iraq, and Russia.

October 2007: Middle East Airlines (MEA) announced that it earned a net profit of +$39 million in 2006, despite the hardships it faced when Beirut Rafik Hariri International was closed for 36 days that summer, during hostilities between Lebanon and Israel. The result was down -36.5% from the +$61.4 million earned in 2005. Chairman, Mohammed Hout said the carrier partially offset a -$32.5 million revenue decline with the leasing out of its airplanes, which netted +$13.3 million. He said (MEA) will float a 25% stake "when the time is ripe."

April 2008: (MEA) is expected to achieve +$45 to +$50 million profit for 2007, compared to +$46 million and +$40 million for 2005 and 2006, respectively.

June 2008: Middle East Airlines (MEA) took delivery of its 1st A330-200 directly purchased from Airbus (EDS). The (Trent 700)-powered airplane is part of an order for 4 placed in 2006, that will replace (MEA)'s 3 leased A330s. It also operates 6 A321s, has 6 A320s on order and eventually wants to operate a fleet of around 16 airplanes, although Chairman & Director General Mohamad El-Hout said that it "may look at some regional airplanes as well."

(MEA) plans to transport 1.25 million passengers this year, up from 1.1 million in 2007, and after surviving hardships like the 2006 conflict between Lebanon and Israel now faces regulatory hurdles. "Our problem is getting more traffic rights to some destinations in Europe," El-Hout said. "This is not fair, because we have open skies here and all the other carriers can come to Beirut with as many frequencies as they want."

August 2008: (SITA) signed a 5-year, $3 million agreement with Middle East Airlines (MEA) to implement and maintain its (IP VPN). (SITA) will provide secure Internet access to (MEA) network users at their sites around the world and connect the Beirut headquarters to 19 global outstations through 1 gateway. Implementation is underway and will take up to 9 months to complete.

October 2008: Middle East Airlines (MEA) has postponed a planned privatization due to poor market conditions. (MEA) was planning to sell 25% of its equity to public investors. Projects 2008 to have a +$80 million profit, whereas 2007 was +$70 million.

January 2011: (IATA) (ITA)’s in-house magazine, "Airlines International," interviews Mohamad El-Hout the Chairman & Director General of Middle East Airlines (MEA). It’s certainly not easy being a mid-sized short haul-oriented carrier competing against hyper-aggressive Gulf giants. But El-Hout is optimistic if simply because demand and traffic throughout the Middle East is growing fast enough for multiple carriers to prosper. Lebanon, moreover (despite its fragile political condition) is a market with lots of overseas links thanks to a large Lebanese population living in places as diverse as France, West Africa, Brazil, Australia, and the USA.

Middle East Airlines (MEA) is also scheduled to join the SkyTeam (STM) alliance, building on a long relationship with Air France (AFA). As for deregulation, El-Hout says he believes in "open skies" but only when it’s possible for all parties to get airport slots. That’s been a thorny issue in London and Istanbul, for example.

The SkyTeam (STM) alliance said that Lebanon's Middle East Airlines (MEA) will sign an agreement on February 28 "to officially start the process" in 2012 to become a member of the (STM) alliance. (MEA) is the 2nd Middle East carrier to agree to join the (STM) alliance this month, following Saudi Arabian Airlines (SVA). "The (STM) alliance is actively working to strengthen its presence in the Middle East, 1 of the world's most important economic regions," the (STM) alliance said. "(MEA) will be a valuable addition to the alliance by offering customers increased access to the Middle East and Western Africa." It added, "(MEA) has continued to improve its products and services to customers ever since it successfully concluded a thorough restructuring plan. Key elements of this plan included fleet renewal and rationalization, increasing the density of its European, Middle East and West African network and improving product quality and consistency."

February 2011: Middle East Airlines (MEA) will operate seasonal 2x-weekly, Beirut - Dusseldorf A320 service June 2 to September 10, increasing to 3x-weekly on June 15.

March 2011: Middle East Airlines (MEA) formalized its previously-announced decision to join the SkyTeam (STM) alliance in 2012. (MEA) joins Saudi Arabian Airlines (SVA) as future Middle East members of the (STM) alliance.

"The addition of (MEA) to the (STM) alliance network will enable the SkyTeam (STM) alliance to compete more efficiently, not only within the Middle East, but also to and from Western Africa," (STM) said.

The (STM) alliance noted that (MEA) "has continued to improve its products and services [via a] thorough restructuring plan," including "fleet renewal and rationalization, increasing the density of the carrier's European, Middle East, and West African network, and improving product quality and consistency."

(MEA) Chairman & Director General Mohamad El-Hout stated, "By joining the (STM) alliance, (MEA) being relatively a small airline, will now be able to provide its customers an extensive global network covering Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas."

January 2012: Airbus (EDS) delivered A320 (5000, OD-MRL) to Middle East Airlines (MEA). It completes the deliveries of (MEA)’s total order for 7 A320s. It marks a significant milestone for (EDS) and the A320 Family going into 2012, as production rises from 38 to 40 per month during the 1st quarter of the year.

June 2012: The SkyTeam (STM) alliance has just welcomed Middle East Airlines – Air Liban (MEA) as its 17th member. The flag carrier of Lebanon, (MEA) becomes the (STM) alliance’s 2nd Middle Eastern member, offering customers from the region access to an extensive global network.

From its home base in Beirut, Middle East Airlines (MEA) flies to 30 international destinations throughout Africa, the Middle East and Europe. (MEA)’s membership of the SkyTeam (STM) alliance makes it easier for customers to travel to and from Lebanon, whether it’s for business or leisure. This especially benefits the large Lebanese communities living in the USA, Canada and Brazil, who will be able to connect via the major hubs Paris (CDG) and Rome. Beirut is served by (STM) alliance members Alitalia (ALI), Air France (AFA), Aeroflot (ARO), Saudia (SVA) and (TAROM) (TRM), providing additional connections via their hubs in Europe and the Middle East.

China has become an increasingly important trade partner for the Middle East. With members China Airlines (CHI), China Eastern (CEA) and China Southern (GUN), the (STM) alliance network opens up increased opportunities for commerce in the Greater China Region.

“By welcoming (MEA) into the (STM) alliace, we are offering our customers increased travel options to and from Lebanon, particularly given its strong trade links with the Gulf Region, Asia, Africa, and the Americas (all regions with a considerable (STM) alliance footprint,” said Michael Wisbrun (STM) alliance’s Managing Director).

“Joining the (STM) alliance allows us to expand our global reach and offer our customers hundreds more worldwide destinations,” said (MEA) Chairman & Director General, Mohamad El-Hout. “Becoming a (STM) alliance member is integral to our strategy for growth and increased profitability, as we look forward to a future of cooperation with our alliance partners.”

Effective immediately, (MEA) customers will be able to earn and redeem miles on services operated by all (STM) alliance member airlines. Members of other (STM) alliance airlines’ frequent flyer programs can also earn and redeem miles when flying on (MEA) operated flights.

(MEA)’s membership and integration into the (STM) alliance is sponsored by founding (STM) alliance member Air France (AFA).

(CAL) Cargo Air Lines (CRG) and (MEA) - Middle East Airlines are reportedly interested in taking over the 69% stake of the government of Cyprus in national carrier Cyprus Airways (CYP). Previously, Canadian investor Triple Alpha had already confirmed its interest in Cyprus Airways (CYP). (CRG) already cooperates with Cyprus Airways (CYP) on cargo services.

(MEA) - Middle East Airlines plans to retire its remaining 4 A321-200s by the end of 2013 with additional A320-200s replacing the airplanes to be retired. It currently operates 9 A320-200s, 4 A321-200s and 4 A330-200s.

July 2012: Middle East Airlines (MEA) - Air Liban made a Memo of Understanding (MOU) for 5 A320neos, and 5 A321neos plus 8 options valued at $1.05 million.

September 2012: (GE) Capital Aviation Services Limited (GECAS) (GEF) announced the delivery of a 3rd new A320 to Middle East Airlines (MEA). The 2 previous airplanes were delivered in May and June to expand (MEA)’s fleet. (MEA) currently operates a fleet of 17 airplanes to destinations in Africa, Europe, the Gulf region and the Middle East. It is a member of the SkyTeam (STM) alliance.

January 2013: Middle East Airlines (MEA) has finalized an order for 5 A321neos and 5 A320neos, firming up a deal 1st announced in July last year.

The original memorandum of understanding (MOU), which also included eight options, was signed at the Farnborough Airshow in July.

The firm A320neo contract builds on (MEA)’s existing Airbus (EDS) fleet, which comprises 4 A330-200s, 4 A321s and 10 A320s.

May 2013: Lebanon’s central bank, Banque du Liban, has blocked a proposed takeover of financially troubled Cyprus Airways (CYP) by Middle East Airlines (MEA). Central Bank Governor, Riad Salameh said the bank could not approve (MEA)’s bid because it could increase (MEA)’s exposure to risk, according to Lebanon’s "Daily Star."

The paper quoted Salameh as saying: “Commercially, this matter is left to (MEA) to assess the acquisition. But in principle, the central bank, which controls the majority of the national carrier, cannot approve (MEA)'s acquisition of (CYP). The duty of the Central Bank is to use its money to protect the monetary and economic situations and for this reason we cannot bear more risks for companies that belong to us. Unless (MEA) becomes a private company, it is difficult for (MEA) to expand outside Lebanon because this does not suit the role and purposes of the central bank.”

Last month, Cyprus Airways (CYP) and the Cypriot Finance Ministry held preliminary talks with (MEA). However, (CYP) said it also had consultations “with other companies that had shown interest,” including China’s Beijing Yi Xiang Da Investment Company. It stressed, however, that “consultations are at an early stage and there is currently nothing further to announce.”

Communications Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos has reportedly confirmed that (MEA) is no longer interested in investing in (CYP), but reiterated that other investors were exploring investment possibilities.

In the meantime, the government of Cyprus has adopted a restructuring plan proposed by the board of directors to save the struggling airline from closure. It includes reducing its fleet to just 6 airplanes plus a spare, as well as staff layoffs. However, according to the "Cyprus Mail," the entire board of Cyprus Airways (CYP) resigned in protest at the government’s promise to find €20 million/$26 million in compensation for workers laid off under the restructuring plan. Local media sources said the board was simply unable to find the compensation money agreed between the government and the unions.

July 2013: Middle East Airlines (MEA) commenced operations on the 1,100 km route from Beirut (BEY) in Lebanon to Yerevan (EVN) in Armenia on July 5. The route, which was previously operated by Armavia (ARZ) until March 2013, is offered with 2x-weekly frequencies using A320s.

August 2013: Air France (AFA) is flying Paris (CDG) - Erbil, Iraq through September 15 on a code share with Middle East Airlines (MEA).

March 2014: Middle East Airlines (MEA) added a 2nd daily, Beirut - London (LHR) Airbus A320 service from April 17.

May 2015: A321-231 (1977, OD-RMI) was repainted into retro 1960's colors.

May 2017: Lebanon’s Middle East Airlines (MEA) and Istanbul-based Turkish Airlines (THY) will code share beginning May 15.

Star (SAL) Alliance member Turkish Airlines (THY) will place its TK designator code on SkyTeam (STM) member (MEA)´s double-daily Istanbul Ataturk - Beirut flights; in return, (MEA) will place its ME designator code on Turkish’s 3x-daily flights on the same route.

(MEA) Chairman Mohamad A El-Hout noted the agreement was “signed between 2 members of 2 different airline alliances, which proves the ability of both carriers to expand their networks to cities not served by their aircraft.”

Turkish Airlines (THY) Deputy Chairman & (CEO) Bilal Ek&#351;i said hopes this is a 1st step to further enhance relations between 2 airlines.
