November 2002: Efforts to privatize (MIAT)-Mongolian Airlines (MNG) continue. However, the proposed European Recovery & Development Bank (ERDB) scheme to support a "foreign" (non-Mongolian) management team, has been delayed slightly.

February 2006: Chinese domestic airlines flew a record 138 million passengers in 2005, a rise of +15% over 2004 and double the number of 2000. The figure is expected to double again in the next five years, according to Gao Geng, the Vice Minister of the General Administration of Civil Aviation in China. Cargo and airmail throughput rose +14% to 3.04 million tons in 2005 and also is expected to double in the next 5 years. However, profit margins will remain tight within the sector. He noted revenues in the sector had grown to CNY170 billion/$21.09 billion at the end of 2005, but profits in the past 5 years had amounted to only CNY10 billion.

February 2008: (CIT) Aerospace (TCI) will lease a (CFM56)-powered 737-8AS (29922, EI-CSG) to (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG). Delivery is scheduled for April.
April 2008: Aeroflot (ARO) signed a cooperation agreement with (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG) that will begin with an interline agreement and by October include code share flights between Moscow Sheremetyevo and Ulan Bator, a special prorate agreement, luggage check-through, and interline e-ticketing. Loyalty program linkup and cooperation on freight and promotion will come later.

April 2009: The European Union (EU) and Mongolia signed a horizontal aviation agreement designed to "restore legal certainty regarding bilateral air services agreements" between Mongolia and 12 (EU) member nations. It will remove nationality restrictions in the existing air services agreements, allowing any (EU) airline to operate between Mongolia and any of the 12 nations in which it is established.
February 2010: Scheduled air links between Mukhino airport in the Russian city of Ulan Ude and the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar will be inaugurated from April 2010 following the amendment to the July 2006 bilateral air services agreement between the 2 countries. Ulan Ude is the largest city in the Republic of Baratua, close to the Russian - Mongolian border and a popular location for traffic into Mongolia, however, up until now travelers have had to endure either a 20-hour rail journey or a flight via Moscow.

June 2011: Boeing (TBC) and (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG) have announced an order for 2 Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes and 1 767-300ER (extended range) airplane. The order, valued at $245 million at list prices, marks the 1st time in >2 decades that (MNG) will extend its route network by purchasing Boeing (TBC) airplanes instead of leasing them.
The agreement was signed by Kim Pastega VP & General Manager of the 767 Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and Orkhon Tseyen-Oidov President & (CEO) of (MNG), at the USA State Department in Washington DC, in the presence of Tsakhia Elbegdorj President of Mongolia, and Gary Locke the USA Secretary of Commerce.

February 2012: The Bodi Group, one of Mongolia's business consortiums is, according to local media, planning to establish a new domestic carrier called Mongolian Airlines (MML). It will operate initially with Fokker F 50 turboprops and will be affiliated to the national airline, (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG).
May 2012: (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines ((IATA) Code: MR, based at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khaan airport (ULN)) (MML) plans to launch international flights from Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khaan airport (ULN) with its A319-100s, initially serving Erenhot Saiwusu International (ERL) and Tianjin Binhai International (TSN) airports. Later this year, it will add Hong Kong Chep Lap Kok International airport (HKG) (from June 1) and Tokyo Haneda airport (HND) (from July 1).
July 2012: On July 14th, (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MML) launched services from Ulaanbaatar (ULN) to Tokyo Haneda (HND), making the Japanese capital its 2nd international destination following the launch of Hong Kong services just over a month ago. 3x-weekly services are now offered on the 3,000-km route, and will be operated using A319s on a seasonal basis until early September.
April 2013: To avoid confusion, the Mongolian Airlines Group has changed its name to Hunnu Air (MML) to be clearly different from the international flag carrier, (MIT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG).

May 2013: Boeing delivered a 767-34GER (41519, JU-1021) (extended range) to (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG), the 1st-ever direct purchase delivery to (MNG). “This is a momentous step forward for (MNG) as we continue to enhance our fleet,” said Jargalsaikhan Gungaa President and (CEO) of (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG). “We are pleased with the comfort, range and payload of the new 767-300ER and we look forward to introducing it into our long-haul fleet.”

Mongolia’s flag carrier completed a historic order in 2011 at the USA State Department in Washington DC, marking the 1st time in >2 decades that (MNG) extended its route network by purchasing Boeing (TBC) airplanes instead of leasing them.
August 2013: (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG) launched its 2nd route to China on August 7 with the introduction of 3x-weekly from Ulaanbaatar (ULN) to Erenhot (ERL), located close to the Mongolian border. At just 644 km, this is (MNG)’s shortest route and is flown by 1 of (MNG)’s 2 737-800s. (MNG) also operates 3 767-300s. (MNG) currently operates scheduled flights to 8 destinations: Beijing, Berlin Tegel, Hong Kong, Moscow Sheremetyevo, Osaka Kansai, Seoul Incheon, Tokyo Narita, and now Erenhot.
January 2014: Mongolian Airlines (MNG) and the Export-Import Bank of the USA and finalized the export of a 767-300ER with (GE) engines.
June 2014: (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG) has selected Frankfurt (FRA) as its 3rd destination in Europe. On June 19th, (MNG) began 2x-weekly (Thursdays and Sundays) services on the 6,640 km route from Ulaanbator (ULN) using (MNG)’s 767-300s.

The new service will operate until mid-September and faces no direct competition. (MNG)’s other destinations in Europe are Berlin Tegel and Moscow Sheremetyevo, while Beijing, Hong Kong, Osaka Kansai, Seoul Incheon, and Tokyo Narita complete (MNG)’s international network.
August 2014: Mongolia will reduce radar separation standards between airplanes from 90 to 30 km in September. The move follows a review of the Mongolian Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA) safety assessment requirements by New Zealand air navigation services provider, Airways New Zealand.
Airways New Zealand has been helping the (MCAA) to reduce airplane separation distances, following the installation in 2012 of radar sites across the region. Radar control has been gradually introduced, starting with a conservative 90 km separation between airplanes. Airways New Zealand has been working with the (MCAA) to assess reducing radar separation standards to more closely align with the (ICAO) standard of 5 nautical miles/10 km.
Tim Bradding, a former airways Safety Manager and current Regional Chief Controller who has been working with the (MCAA), said: “Reducing airplane separation requirements in a safe manner will allow the Mongolian (CAA) to more rapidly increase their air traffic flows, with economic benefits across the country and the region.”
September 2014: (MIAT) - Mongolian Airlines ((IATA) Code: OM, based at Ulaanbaatar) (MNG) has opened the door to international cooperation amid a general downturn in the Mongolian economy. Requesting proposals from interested parties, the Mongolian national carrier said it had already crafted its own mid-term business plan covering the period 2015 to 2017.
"Therefore, (MIAT) Mongolian Airline is cordially inviting all interested parties to support and participate in the development of the mid-term Business Plan utilizing its own financial resources," it said.
On September 3, Aeroflot (ARO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with (MIAT) pledging its cooperation and support for the airline following talks between Russia's Vladimir Putin and his Mongolian counterpart, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj. It is unknown as to what extent the cooperation will encompass.
Private operator Eznis Airways ((IATA) Code: EF, based at Ulaanbaatar) was forced to indefinitely suspend its own operations in May this year also citing harsh market conditions.
Ratings agency Fitch warned in July this year that 1 of Mongolia's most significant challenges in raising economic activity (and improving external finances) has been the slowdown in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since the end of construction for the 1st phase of the multi-billion dollar Oyu Tolgoi copper mine. However, the resumption of works under the project's 2nd phase is expected to provide a significant boost to foreign-capital inflows and broader economic activity.
October 2014: With the official launch of its 1st schedule to Singapore, Mongolia’s (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG) flag carrier has signaled its intention to significantly extend its east-west route network, potentially to the USA and Australia.
Its current mainly single-destination network serves Japan, China, and Korea in the east, and Berlin and Moscow to the west from its central Asian base at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
However, the addition of a new 2x-weekly service between its home hub and Singapore via Beijing, using (MNG)’s 737-800s opens up SE Asia to (MNG). (MNG) has already committed to expanding its long-haul routes with the addition last year of a new 767-300ER to service more distant destinations.
The company did not say if the expansion would be in the form of direct flights, but given its newly introduced policy of running multi-stop schedules such as Moscow to Frankfurt to Berlin and now Beijing to Singapore, it seems likely it will do the same for its stated Australian and North American target destinations.
“Singapore is 1st extension [in this plan],” a company spokesperson said. “Our company policy is to open destinations to Australia and America,” he said. He added that the “5th freedom” landing and re-provisioning agreements at both Beijing and Singapore made it likely they would be used for these route expansions.
Although at the time of delivery (MNG) (CEO) Jargalsaikhan Gungaa said (MNG)’s new 767-300 airplanes would principally be used on the Berlin, Frankfurt and Moscow schedules, the company could use them to extend its reach even further with destinations beyond the Asian continent.
A Changi Airport spokesperson noted the new Singapore schedule would “open up [Mongolia’s] economy and resource sectors not only with Singapore but the Asia-Pacific.”
As one of the world’s biggest developers of new mining projects in the coal, copper and gold sectors, Mongolia said it is expecting increasing business traffic into the region following a new law that has boosted land available for mining exploration by 12% in recent months to 20% of Mongolia’s total land area, and extended exploration leases to 12-year blocks.

April 2017: (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG) has confirmed plans to lease 2 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes from Avolon (AZV). (MNG), the Ulaanbaatar-based carrier intends to introduce the airplanes in early 2019, using them on its existing routes to South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, and Germany, as well as new links.
“The 737 MAX will become a cornerstone in our fleet modernization strategy as we look to introduce new airplanes to our customers in the years to come,” said Tamir Tumurbaatar, President & (CEO), (MIAT) Mongolian Airlines (MNG). “These fuel efficient airplanes will help us realize our goals of driving down operational costs and expanding the regional network, while also providing our valued customers and passengers with an unmatched flying experience.” “We will commence a new scheduled flight to Busan, South Korea beginning this summer and increase frequency for all flights toward Asian and European destinations to accommodate our peak travel season while continuously looking for new possibilities to open new markets in the coming years,” added Tumurbaatar.
(MNG) is a committed Boeing customer and currently operates 3 Next Generation 737 and 2 767s.

March 2018: (GOL) (GOT) reported a BRL378.2 million/$114 million net profit for 2017, a -65.7% drop from BRL1.1 billion in 2016 net income, as (GOT) paid BRL547 million in deferred income taxes during the year.
(GOT)’s full-year revenue totaled BRL10.6 billion, up +7.2% year-over-year (YOY) driven by a +3.6% increase in passenger traffic and 4.8% higher stage-lengths, despite a +7% rise in average airfares. Cargo and other revenue (including excess baggage fees) increased +16.2% related, (GOT) said, to improvements in Brazil’s economy seen in the latter half of the year.
Rising fuel prices contributed to a +3.7% rise in (GOT)’s (CASK) for the full year. (GOT)’s operating expenses were up +4.6% BRL9.6 billion as fuel expenses rose +7.1% (YOY). However, maintenance materials and repairs expenses dropped -37.8% and labor expenses increased by only a modest +3.1% as the airline continued capacity control measures initiated in 2016 amid Brazil’s economic downturn.
In 2017, (GOT)’s total capacity increased just 0.8% to 46.7 billion (ASK)s. With traffic totaling 37.2 billion (RPK)s, load factor for the year reached 79.7% LF, up +2.2 points (YOY).
The company reported BRL990 million in operating income for the year, up 42.1% (YOY); (GOT)’s operating margin for the year was 9.4%, up +2.3 points.
As of December 31, 2017, (GOT) was operating 121 Boeing 737-NG airplanes (92 737-800s and 27 737-700s). The company has 120 737 MAX 8s on order for fleet renewal by 2028, the 1st of which is expected to be delivered in July 2018.
(GOT) (CEO) Paulo Kakinoff said the incorporation of the new 737 MAX 8s in the 2nd half of 2018 will allow (GOT) to offer nonstop flights from Brazil to any destination in Latin America as well as destinations in Florida. (GOT) began selling tickets in January to its 1st USA destinations, Miami and Orlando. “The new service will be flown by our new [737 MAX 8s] and will start November 4 with departures from Brasilia and Fortaleza, cities chosen for their privileged geographic locations and connectivity with other (GOT) markets,” Kakinoff said.
Looking ahead, (GOT) is projecting an operating (EBIT) margin of approximately 11% for full-year 2018 and a preliminary (EBIT) margin guidance of about 13% for 2019. Total net revenues for 2018 are forecast at about BRL11 billion; for 2019 net revenues are forecast about BRL12 billion. 2018 capacity growth is forecast at between 1% to 3%; for 2019, (GOT) is projecting capacity growth between 5%-10%. International capacity growth is forecast at between 7% to 10% in 2018, and 30% to 40% in 2019.
