August 2002: As part of privatization, sells 49% to UK airplane leasing company, Airwing Aerospace.

October 2002: Nigeria Airways (NIA) had a 747 impounded in Dubai, by ASECNA, who threatened to confiscate all assets until (NIA) pays at least EUR1.5 million from a total debt of EUR3.89 million. ASECNA has already obtained a court judgement against the airline. When the airplane was about to leave Dubai, it developed a technical fault, which (NIA) had no money to immediately repair, and the 747 was grounded.

Nigerian civil regulatory authority, grounded Chanchangi (CGI), Bellview (BEB), and Nigeria Airways (NIA), who owe en route navigation charges, and other debts, which must be recovered.

December 2002: Nigeria Airways (NIA) reportedly owes Air Atlanta Icelandic (AID) $10 million in wet-lease fees, and (AID) is now only operating for (NIA) if the pre-payment is made. The 767-200 was parked at London Heathrow (LHR), and the 747-200 at Lagos.

January 2003: Some service resumed on the 747-200, (AID) wet-leased, after >100 passengers were stranded in Dubai and Police intervened.

June 2003: 2,660 employees.

April 2006: New Nigerian start-up Arik Air (AKI) moves into the former Nigerian Airlines (NIA) airport facilities at Lagos Airport.
