PACE Airlines (PIE)'s parent, Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation, is selling PACE Airlines, simply because it has gotten too big, increasing in size from 4 to 18 airplanes in the last 2 years. PACE Airlines will maintain its core business, HQ remains in Winston-Salem, and will retain the PACE Airlines name.

In 1/03, will move its hub from Sanford to Atlanta for nonstop charter flights to the Caribbean, Cancun, and Costa Rica, for Vacation Express. Atlanta will also serve as a connecting point for for flights from Baltimore, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville, and New Orleans.

January 2003: Rolls out its first "Hooters Air One" 737 from Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport hangar. 737 has an orange and white paint scheme, "Hooters Air" graphics, and a large owl on the tail, from the famous Hooters Restaurant chain. Airplane flown to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where work will continue on the airplane with the installation of a new interior, featuring 112 blue leather seats, 33 ins pitch. A 2nd airplane, "Hooters Air Two" is in painting and both airplanes should be in service in 3/03. Hooters Air airplanes are being modified by Delta Airlines (DAL) under a maintenance support agreement for all Pace Airlines (PIE) airplanes. Plans to staff its Hooter flights with 3 cabin attendants (CA) and 2 Hooters girls to assist with food and beverage service.

Hooters Air (PIE) is going bust after chipping steadily away at its flight schedule over the past three months. It will end scheduled service by April 17, according to the Myrtle Beach Sun News. The airline is owned by Robert Brooks, chairman of Atlanta-based restaurant chain Hooters of America. He launched Hooters Air in 2002 after acquiring Pace Airlines (PIE), a North Carolina-based charter carrier. Based at Myrtle Beach International Airport, Hooters (PIE) was designed for leisure travelers. It eventually extended service to 15 destinations and operated up to seven airplanes. Pace Airlines (PIE) will continue to provide charter service operations, a company spokesperson said.

September 2007: The estate of Robert Brooks, the late founder of the Hooters restaurant chain, is currently in negotiations to sell Pace Airlines (PIE). Under new ownership, the carrier will reportedly fly larger airplanes and international routes.

September 2009: Pace Airlines (PIE) CEO, William Charles Rodgers was arrested and charged with one count of willful failure to pay group health insurance premiums. North Carolina officials alleged that Rodgers terminated the policy without providing required notice to (PIE)'s 337 employees. (PIE) is a charter carrier based in Winston-Salem and operated 17 Boeing airplanes, according to its website. The "Winston-Salem Journal" reported that the airline laid off or furloughed at least -275 employees in the past two weeks, announced a 90-day suspension of charter operations and owes nearly $900,000 in airport lease payments. It also said Continental Airlines (CAL) terminated a maintenance agreement that was set to run through 2010.
