Panalpina was fully owned by the Ernst Göhner Foundation until its successful public listing on the SWX Swiss Exchange on September 22, 2005. In 2005, Panalpina acquired Janco Oilfield Services in Singapore and Overseas Shipping Group in Norway.
While the company offers services to various industry verticals such as Hi-Tech, Automotive, Telecom, Retail&Fashion, Health Care as well as Oil and Gas, in the latter it has a leading position in providing logistic services on a global scale. In addition, Panalpina has a cooperating agreement with cargo airline, Atlas Air Cargo (TLS), which in turn has 1 Boeing 747 named "Spirit of Panalpina."

In 2010, Panalpina is close to settling foreign bribery charges by USA regulators to pay $85 million over bribery allegations. The USA Department of Justice and the Securities & Exchange Commission have investigated about whether the company had paid foreign officials to speed drilling rigs and other equipment through customs (source : http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1416302920101015).
May 2012: The 1st of 2 brand-new Boeing 747-8F Freighters ( - SEE PHOTO - "PLP-747-8F - 2012-05") entered scheduled service within Panalpina (PLP)'s unique own controlled air freight network. The 747-8F in Panalpina (PLP) livery (a 1st in the company's history) was handed over to Panalpina on the occasion of a festive out-of-hangar event at Boeing’s manufacturing facility in Everett, Washington, USA.
For the 1st time in the Panalpina’s history, a jet airplane freighter with Panalpina’s name and logo took to the skies. Following the hand-over ceremony on May 31st, the 747-8F with tail registration number (N850GT) took off from Paine Field in Everett, Washington State, USA, just located North of nearby Seattle and flew to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the 747-7F named the “Spirit of Panalpina” immediately entered scheduled service within Panalpina’s unique own controlled air freight network.
From Hong Kong, the 747-8F flew on to Luxembourg with the 1st cargo on board. The airplane is being deployed on the Luxembourg / Huntsville route as well as other routes. Panalpina launched the Luxembourg / Huntsville route, also known as the “Dixie Jet,” as the very first own controlled service in 1990. Within the own controlled air freight network, Panalpina can be particularly responsive to individual requirements, also on short notice, because the freight forwarder can arrange its own capacity.
In September 2011, Panalpina (PLP) and Atlas Air (TLS), a leading global provider of outsourced jet airplanes and aviation operating services, signed a wet-lease agreement for 2 747-8F Freighters. They are replacing 2 previous generation 747-400F Freighters and the 1st of that type to be registered in the USA. The delivery of the 2nd 747-8F is foreseen for later in 2012.
The 747-8F offers +16% more capacity than the 747-400F. It is also more environmentally friendly with double digit improvements in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions and a noise footprint reduction by -30%. “We are staying ahead of the game by combining our expertise, our global network and our industry specific know-how with the best cargo airplane that the world of aviation has to offer”, said Panalpina (CEO) Monika Ribar. “This is very exciting and it opens up new horizons for flexible and innovative air freight solutions, especially for our Healthcare, Hi-Tech, Automotive and Oil and Gas customers.”

The new 747-8F adds further value to Panalpina (PLP)’s own controlled air freight network. One of the airplane’s innovative features is that 2 controlled temperature ranges can be maintained at the same time: One for 2 to 8 degrees Celsius (cold chain) and one for 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (controlled room temperature). Full visibility of temperature monitoring is guaranteed, from pick-up via Panalpina (PLP)’s air freight hubs to final point of delivery. The secure and temperature controlled transport of products is a must within the healthcare industry.

The only freight forwarder with an own controlled network,
Panalpina (PLP) is the only freight forwarder with an own controlled network besides regular air freight product offerings and global charter programs. The own controlled network acts as an in-house carrier to the whole Panalpina (PLP) network. It has been designed to offer capacities and solutions in routings required by customers across various industries that cannot be covered by commercial carriers in the air freight market. Roughly 20% of Panalpina (PLP)’s global air freight volumes are handled by the own controlled network. The remaining volumes are procured with commercial carriers.
December 2013: Atlas Air (TLS) has signed an agreement with Hong Kong-based, (BST) Logistics, a business partner of Navitrans International Freight Forwarding, for the wet-lease of 1 747-8F. The contract is scheduled to begin in February 2014 and will allow (BST) Logistics to provide dedicated airfreight services on key global routes connecting the USA, Europe, and Asia. Of (TLS)'s 6 747-8Fs, 2 currently operate for Luxembourg's Panalpina World Transport (PLP), 2 are operated by Polar Air Cargo (PAO) on behalf of (DHL) Express, while a 5th operates for Etihad Airways (EHD).

MS MONIKA RIBAR, PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO).
Monika Ribar joined the Group in 1991. She held several positions within the Group’s controlling Information Technology (IT) and global project management departments. From 2000 until 2005, she held the position of the Chief Information Officer (CIP) of the Group and was member of the Executive Board. In 2005, Monika Ribar was appointed as (CFO) of the Group, and in June 2006 her appointment as (CEO) was announced. She officially took office as (CEO) in October 2006. Apart from individual Executive Board members, the Head of Corporate Communications, Corporate Compliance and Corporate Development are also directly reporting to her.
She holds a university degree in Finance & Controlling from the University of St Gall. She participated in the Executive Program of the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, in 1999. Monika Ribar was elected one of the 50 most influential business women in the world by the "Financial Times" and "Fortune" magazine.
Other function: Member of the board of directors of Logitech International SA, Romanel / Morges, Switzerland; Member of the board of directors of Sika AG, Baar, Switzerland.
KARL WEYENETH, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER (COO).
Karl Weyeneth is responsible for Air Freight, Ocean Freight, Logistics, Marketing, Sales & Business Processes, and Quality.
Karl Weyeneth joined the Group in 2007 as Regional (CEO) for North America, where he was responsible for the development and results of the subsidiaries in USA and Canada. He has over sixteen years logistics experience, including freight management, 3PL and contract logistics. Before joining Panalpina he was President & (CEO), the Americas of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, Inc (USA) and prior to this he was Executive VP & (CFO) of Danzas Management Latin America (USA), where he attained profound experience in all Finance matters.
Karl Weyeneth holds a Master in Business Administration from the University of Berne, Switzerland.
MARCO GADOLA, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER (CFO).
Marco Gadola is responsible for Accounting, Corporate Taxes, Corporate Controlling, Investor Relations, Indirect Purchasing, Strategic Finance and Projects, Group Treasury and Corporate Information Technology (IT).
Marco Gadola is a finance and economics expert with many years experience at international companies. Before joining Panalpina (PLP), he was Group (CFO) and Executive VP Operations of Straumann Holding, a world leading Swiss based dental and oral technology company. Prior to that, he was Group (CFO) of the Swiss-based international consumer foods company Hero. He also held leading management positions at the Hilti Group, which manufactures and sells products for the construction and building industries. Furthermore both at Straumann, as well as at Hero, Marco Gadola oversaw production, logistics, investor relations and information technology (IT) worldwide, and played a leading part in the acquisition and integration of companies.
Marco Gadola holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration & Economics from the University of Basel (Switzerland). He also completed the Accelerated Management Development Program at the London School of Economics.
CHRISTOPHER HESS, CORPORATE SECRETARY.
Christopher Hess is responsible for Corporate Legal Services, Government Affairs and Corporate Insurance Management.
Christoph Hess joined the Group’s head office in 1994 as General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Directors and the Executive Board. In his capacity, he also manages both the Group’s Legal & Insurance departments. Further, he managed Corporate Communications until April 2008.
Christoph Hess holds a degree in law from the University of Basel and has been admitted to the bar in Switzerland.
ALASTAIR ROBERTSON, CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCES (HR) OFFICER
Alastair Robertson is responsible for Human Resources (HR) Processes and Projects, International Compensation and Benefits, Human Resources Operations, Capability Development and the Panalpina Academy.
Alastair Robertson joined the Group in 2007 as Head of Global Human Resources. Before joining Panalpina, he was a Vice President at the Company Tetra Pak since 1996, where he held various positions in the domain of Human Resources (HR). Between 1999 and 2001, he was VP Human Resources Americas and between 2002 and 2004 he was VP Human Resources Europe & Africa. From 1992 to 1996 he worked for W H Smith in the field of Personnel, Development & Training, and between 1989 and 1992 he was with Graham Builders Merchants as Manager Human Resources Management, Training & Development. Before that, he served in the Military Forces where he attained the rank of Major having served in numerous countries.
Alastair Robertson holds an MBA in Strategy & Marketing from the University of Huddersfield, Bradford (UK). He also attended the Royal School of Military Engineering, UK and the Royal Military Academy, UK.
