DOHA, QATAR

Qatar was established in 1971, it covers an area of 11,437 sq km, its population is 618,000, its capital city is Doha, and its official language is Arabic. In recent years, Qatar has modernized very rapidly, being funded by oil, and the world's largest natural gas field. Qatar is where "Al Jazeera," the powerful, global Arabic-language, TV news network is based.

Situated halfway up the western shore of the Arabian Gulf, Qatar is almost completely surrounded by sea. It borders Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the south, and Bahrain in the northwest. Well-preserved natural and historical sites, coupled with top-calibre business, sports, dining, shopping, and accommodation facilities, render Qatar the perfect gateway to the Arabian Gulf. The commercial and administrative center, Doha, hosts the international airport, seaport, hotels, and sports facilities. Doha is built around a beautiful bay, along which there is a 7 km long corniche lined with lush gardens. Today, Doha's cosmopolitan spirit strikes a perfect balance with its rich cultural and religious heritage. Qatar's economy is very strong, due to its abundance of oil and natural gas reserves. This means that there is significant ongoing investment being made into the local infrastructure to support high standards of living and the successful development of tourism. The terrain is generally flat. However, there are some hills and sand dunes, which reach an altitude of 40 meters above sea level in the areas of Dukhan and Jebel Fuwairit in the western and northern parts of the country and Khor Al-Udeid in the south. Qatar has a desert climate of hot summers and relatively warm winters. In the summer, the temperature ranges between 25 and 46 degrees centigrade. Rainfall in the winter is minimal, and on average, does not exceed 75.2mm. per year.

HAMAD BIN JASSIM BIN JABR AL THANI, CHAIRMAN.

HIS EXCELLENCY AKBAR AL BAKER, GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) (1997-01).
Akbar Al Baker has been instrumental in shaping the development of Qatar Airways (QTA) into one of the fastest growing and most highly acclaimed airlines in the world. Born in Doha, he is a graduate in Economics and Commerce and worked at various levels in the Civil Aviation Directorate, before becoming (QTA)'s (CEO) in 1997. He has, over the last decade, spearheaded the growth of (QTA), which operated only four airplanes in a regional capacity prior to his appointment.

He also has led the development of the Doha International Airport, which opened in phases from 2010. A highly motivated individual, Mr Al Baker has been a successful businessman in Doha for more than >25 years, holds a private pilot license, and is also (CEO) of several divisions of Qatar's national airline - these being Qatar Airways Holidays, Qatar Aviation Services, Qatar Duty Free Company, Doha International Airport, Qatar Distribution Company, and Qatar Aircraft Catering Company.

February 2011: Qatar Airways (QTA) CEO, Akbar Al Baker responded strongly to remarks made by Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus in which the Secretary General of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) called for an (ICAO) mechanism to regulate "capacity dumping" by Qatar Airways (QTA), Emirates Airline (EAD) and Etihad Airways (EHD), describing the comments as "factually incorrect and unfounded."

Speaking to the International Aviation Club in Washington, Schulte-Strathaus said the airlines represent a new kind of competitive threat that is incompatible with the existing world aviation order. The trio of Persian Gulf-based carriers "are owned by their respective governments and operated as an instrument of national strategy (if 'national' is the right word within this regional rivalry) and they are integrated vertically across commerce, tourism and foreign policy."
