October 2010: Brunei International Airport will renovate and expand its passenger terminal to make it more aesthetically pleasing and comparable to other international airports in Asia. The project will be implemented on a design-and-build basis, and the plan is to issue a tender early in the 1st quarter of 2011, said Julian Fung, head of infrastructure development of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB). Changi Airports International, the consulting arm of Singapore’s Changi Airports Group, will advise the (BEDB), said Fung.
Brunei’s government has tasked the (BEDB) with transforming the terminal, but upgrades to other facilities–such as the runway and taxiways–remain the responsibility of the Civil Aviation Department, he adds. “The whole idea is to transform the existing terminal
building to make it more aesthetically pleasing and passenger-friendly,” he says, adding, “There is a plan to extend the building to give it more floor space and transform the look and feel of the exterior and interior and bring it to a higher standard.” He added, “There is a possibility the terminal will have more gates, but the intention of increasing the floor space is really to give passengers more space, have more space for retail and more room for passenger comfort.”
Changi Airports International says the cost of the upgrade is budgeted at B$130 million/$100 million and is to be completed over a 36-month period.
March 2012: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) will return 2 of its 6 777-200ERs to the lessors by the end of this year as it no longer requires as much long-haul capacity. Its only remaining long-haul services are a daily flights from Bandar Seri Begawan International airport (BWN) via Dubai International airport (DXB) to London Heathrow airport (LHR), and from Bandar Seri Begawan airport to Melbourne Tullamarine International airport (MEL) as well as 2x-weekly, Bandar Seri Begawan airport to Jeddah King Abdul Aziz airport (JED) services.
October 2013: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) has taken delivery of the 1st of 5 Boeing 787s scheduled for (RBA)’s long-haul fleet expansion plan becoming the 1st SE Asian operator of the type.
On October 2, the 787 flew nonstop from Boeing (TBC)’s facility at Paine Field in Everett, north of Seattle, Washington to Bandar Seri Begawan International Airport in Brunei.
Royal Brunei (RBA) is scheduled to start operating the 787 to Singapore from October 18, with long-haul service to London, via Dubai, set to begin December 1. (RBA) plans to use the 787 for services to Melbourne, Australia, in the 2014 second quarter.

November 2013: Royal Brunei (RBA) will introduce 787 Dreamliner service December 2 on London to Dubai to Brunei, along with a re-branding strategy called "Betterfly." (RBA) will offer all-787 service on long-haul flights beginning in April 2014.

May 2014: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) will resume flights to Bali, Indonesia from July. The flag carrier of the Sultanate of Brunei (RBA) is looking to tap into the growing tourism trade for European travelers, with a 4x-weekly Airbus A319 service.
(RBA) resumed serving Denpasar (DPS) on the island of Bali, Indonesia on July 26th. The 4x-weekly flights on the 1,510 km route from Bandar Seri Begawan (BWN) will be operated by (RBA)’s A319s and A320s and faces no competition. (RBA) previously served the route between 1993 and 2008.
(RBA)’s Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion said, “The Commercial team does regular route studies for ways to develop and increase connectivity for our markets. In their latest studies, Bali has emerged a front runner in providing connections for key markets in London and Dubai and also for regional destinations like Hong Kong and Shanghai. We are delighted to include Bali, an exciting holiday destination, into our network.” This brings (RBI)’s network to 12 non-stop destinations, with Dubai and Melbourne the only sectors of >3,000 km. These are operated by a fleet comprising 4 787-8s, 4 A320s and 2 A319s. In October the airline will also resume flights to Ho Chi Minh City.
(RBA) cut its Bali flights in 2003 following a dramatic drop in travel numbers as a result of the (SARS) outbreak, along with flight cuts to the Middle East, Australia and Hong Kong.
The new connection complements the recent inauguration in April of (RBA)’s new Boeing 787s on flights from Melbourne to Brunei, then connecting to London, with a daily service that replaced previous 777s on the route. The addition of Bali to the Royal Brunei (RBA) route map adds to regional coverage for long-haul passengers.
As the 787 launch customer in SE Asia, Royal Brunei (RBA) links its service to regional and international destinations in Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the UK.
Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) has ordered 7 Airbus A320neos, plus 3 options, under the latest phase of its fleet modernization program. The deal is valued at $720 million at current list prices.
The airplanes will be operated on (RBA)’s regional network linking Bandar Seri Begawan with destinations across Asia. The airplanes, which will be configured in a 2-class premium layout, will be powered by Pratt & Whitney (PRW) (PW1100G-JM) engines.
(RBA) Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion said (RBA) has operated the A320 family airplanes since 2003. “We are confident this latest A320neo version will bring even greater levels of efficiency, with -15% less fuel and a significantly reduced impact on the environment,” he said.
At present, the Bruneian national carrier's narrow body fleet consists of 2 A319-100s and 4 A320-200s used on flights to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, Denpasar, Hong Kong Chep Lap Kok, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur International, Manila, Shanghai Pudong, Singapore Changi, and Surabaya.
(RBA) currently operates 10 airplanes, and serves 12 countries, 16 destinations, 17 routes and 30 daily flights.
August 2014: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) will reopen Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh route, which was cut in October 2011, to close up a gap in coverage between its Hong Kong and Bangkok destinations.
(RBA) Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion said the route was reinstated based on the potential for “connections to key markets from Melbourne, Dubai, and London.” He also said the new routing could also link to expanding Vietnamese tourism business for regional destinations in Brunei and West Malaysia. “Ho Chi Minh City emerged a frontrunner in providing [international] connections [and for] regional destinations like Kota Kinabalu,” Mannion said.
(RBA) will operate 4x-weekly flights from Brunei’s Bandar Seri Begawan to Ho Chi Minh’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport using a mix of Airbus A319 on weekdays, and an A320 for weekend flights. Last year, (IATA) flagged Vietnam as the world’s 3rd-fastest growing market for international travel and 2nd-fastest market for domestic air travel into and out of Vietnam (passenger numbers surged +15% in 2013).
November 2014: News Item A-1: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) has expanded its route network to include +6 more UK destinations following a Special Prorate Agreement signed with British Airways (BAB) giving each carrier a fixed price for interlining. The deal will extend (RBA)'s network to key destinations such as Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Belfast. The agreement also means passenger bags will be checked-in all the way to their final destination and their boarding passes for all flights issued at the first check-in point. Business (C) class customers will also have access to all (BAB) business (C) lounges.
News Item A-2: (AWAS) (AWW) and Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) have agreed to lease 2 new Airbus A320 passenger airplanes powered by (IAE) (V2527-A5) engines. The airplanes are expected to be delivered in October 2015 and will be a direct replacement for 2 Royal Brunei (RBA) A319s, which are due to come off lease.
February 2015: Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) announced a long-term agreement with Ras al-Khaimah Tourism (RAK) to develop the destination with UK consumers.
June 2015: Three more airlines (Singapore Airlines (SIA), Royal Brunei (RBA), and Norwegian Air Shuttle (NWG)) have signed up for (SITA) OnAir’s flight tracking system, and AIRCOM FlightTracker. These carriers will join Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Oman Air (OMR) and 10 other unspecified carriers that use the system.
(AIRCOM) has been developed by (SITA), working with a number of airlines to use equipment already fitted to the airplane to provide a tracking solution. No additional hardware is required, just an additional layer of software that can be installed and activated in a matter of days.
The system “meets and exceeds the flight tracking requirements defined by (IATA) and (ICAO),” (SITA) OnAir (CEO) Ian Dawkins said at the (SITA) Air Transport Information Technology (IT) Summit in Brussels.
(AIRCOM) FlightTracker harnesses the communications links already installed on most modern airliners to download position data to an airline's operational center, using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and (ATC) radar data as a tracking tool, while the aircraft is over land and switching to (ACARS) and (FANS) in the oceanic environment.
Dawkins pointed out that 14,000 airplanes in the global fleet are already equipped with some element of (SITA) OnAir, operated by 400 customer airlines. >95 of these are equipped with the (AIRCOM) server, meaning that the software upgrade can be deployed in days. (SITA) has also created a cloud solution for airlines that do not have (AIRCOM).
Norwegian (NWG) (COO), Geir Steiro said: “Norwegian Air Shuttle (NWG) has a strict selection process for every new solution we introduce. (SITA) OnAir’s Flight Tracker is the most complete solution available. Using multiple sources of data, we can track all our aircraft at 15 minute intervals or less. It also provides the most accurate data, using “smoothing' to combine position sources. A bonus feature is the unique way it integrates (ATC) data into our systems. A total of 15 airlines are currently using (AIRCOM) FlightTracker and 7 have also signed up for an option that issues an alert if an aircraft deviates from track. A refined version of the deviation alert system will be integrated into the next version of the system due for release later this year. This will define an operating corridor for the aircraft, incorporating (ATC) data link communications, to ensure that legitimate and approved deviations do not automatically trigger an alert.
(AIRCOM) FlightTracker forces the aircraft to communicate its position at a regular interval,” Dawkins said. “It guarantees regular flight position updates.”
(SITA) is also conducting trials with a major European airline testing the feasibility of streaming black box data from aircraft in the event of an emergency. Dawkins said that if the trials are successful, this capability could be incorporated into (AIRCOM) FlightTracker as early as the end of this year.
“Having immediate access to flight data can help to improve flight safety,” he said.
(SITA) OnAir said it would provide flight tracking and position reporting services free of charge to (SITA) members in the event of an emergency.

Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) has signed a code share agreement with Turkish Airlines (THY) to link its Bandar Seri Begawan hub to (THY)’s home base at Istanbul.
(RBA) will offer its BI code to Brunei-sourced passengers on (THY) flights from Istanbul to Dubai from the end of February, and will also offer (THY) ticket holders access to its Bandar Seri Begawan-Dubai route.
Royal Brunei (RBA) said it was “keen to further expand the code share arrangements in the future to our mutual benefit” with Turkish Airlines (THY), which has committed to an expansion of its key network routes outside its traditional (UK) to Australia schedules to other transfer destinations across Europe and SE Asia.
The agreement also boosts (THY)’s reach into the relatively lightly accessed Southeast Asia region.
(THY) Chief Investment & Technology Officer, Ahmet Bolat said the new code share would improve its ability to sell Bandar Seri Begawan as a destination, but would also “maximize the travel opportunities offered to our passengers” across the region.

August 2016: Hong Kong Airlines (CRY) and Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA), the national flag carrier of Brunei Darussalam, signed a code share agreement to provide travelers with enhanced connections in Asia.
Under the agreement, (CRY)’s “HX” code will be placed on (RBA) daily flights between Hong Kong and Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital and largest city of the Sultanate of Brunei. At the same time, (RBA) will place its “BI” code on (CRY)’s daily flights between Hong Kong and onwards to Tokyo, Japan.
