March 2002: Riau Airlines (RIU) was established.
December 2011: Riau Airlines (RIU) started operations.
It was the only one of Indonesia's commercial airlines headquartered outside of Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, and was also the only commercial airline owned by a local government. It was majority-owned by the Provincial Government of Riau and some other provinces such as Lampung, Bangka Belitung and Bengkulu, as well as some cities and Regencies in Sumatera.
Riau Airlines was originally formed to connect cities within Riau, however it expanded towards linking all major cities on Sumatra island, as well as serving Borneo island, Bali, and Kupang in Central Indonesia.
October 2008: Due to financial difficulties Riau Airlines (RIU) was shut down.
January 2011: Was renamed Riau Air (RIU) and resumed operations with an initial flight Pekanbaru - Tanjung Pinang - Natuna, 4 times a week with a 737-529 (26537, PK-RAW), CIT Group (TCI) leased.
(RIU) serves the following destinations:

November 2011: Riau Air (RIU) operates daily flights from its hub at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in the Riau provincial capital of Pekanbaru to the Indo0nesian island of Batam. (RIU) provides services between Pekanbaru and Singapore's secondary airport, Seletar.
(ICAO) Sign: RIU - (Callsign - RIAU AIR).
Parent organization/shareholders: Riau provincial government; other Sumatran city and provincial governments.
Main Base: Pekanbaru Sultan Syarif Kassim II Airport (PKU); & Jakarta Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport (HLP).
Hubs: Bandar Lampung Airport (TKG); Jambi Airport (DJB); Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL); and Palembang Airport (PLM).
Note: RIAU AIR (RIU)) is listed on the latest (EU) blacklist released 03.04.2012 of airlines whose operations are subject to a ban within the (EU)*. *Airlines listed in Annex A could be permitted to exercise traffic rights by using wet-leased airplanes of an air carrier which is not subject to an operating ban, provided that the relevant safety standards are complied with.
