December 2005: Honeywell (SGC) said it received (FAA) certification for its nitrogen generation system (NGS) for 747s. The Honeywell (SGC) inerting system is based on technology that reduces the risk of a fuel tank's flammability by injecting nitrogen-enriched air, displacing oxygen and reducing the risk of a fuel tank fire or explosion. Nitrogen inerting is one method of complying with a recent (FAA) Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) ordering airlines to reduce flammability levels of fuel tank vapors, in order to eliminate the risk of center wing tank explosions on commercial transports. Honeywell (SGC) is in the process of certifying (NGS)s for other Boeing (TBC) airplanes and is proposing an inerting system for a number of other commercial airplanes.
January 2006: Honeywell (SGC) will provide its Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) to Lufthansa (DLH). (RAAS) uses Ground Proximity System (GPS) technology to compare an airplane's location against a database of airport runways and provides audio alerts.
September 2006: Honeywell (SGC) was selected by Singapore Airlines (SIA) to provide next-generation weather radar for the carrier's 19 new 777-300ERs, with deliveries of its RDR-4000 windshear/weather radar system beginning this month.
Thales (THL) and Smiths Aerospace announced that Lufthansa (DLH) selected the Topflight Flight Management System, a joint product of the two companies, for seven new A340-600s. The airline's decision represents a switch from Honeywell (SGC).
June 2007: Honeywell (SGC) will provide a new Flight Management System (FMS) for the 747-8 program, as well as avionics and mechanical systems. The avionics package includes the Mark V EGPWS with vertical situation display, air data inertial reference system and mode control display. Mechanical systems include a new leading edge flap drive, the nitrogen generation system used to inert fuel tanks and the weight and balance system. The (FMS) Honeywell (SGC) will supply for the 747-8 will be retrofittable to the 747-400, for which the company also supplies the (FMS).
Honeywell (SGC) was selected by Air China (BEJ) to provide its wheels and Cerametalix steel brakes for the airline's existing fleet of 23 737NGs and an additional 57 incoming airplanes. The brakes will be used on the 737NG fleet for 10 years per airplane term.
Honeywell (SGC) was selected to retrofit its wheels and brakes on Air-Berlin (BER)'s fleet of 737-700s/-800s. It said the (BER) 737 fleet is expected to total 130 airplanes by the time the program is completed.
August 2007: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and Sensis Corp are carrying out a technology demonstration that combines Sensis's Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model X ground-based system with Honeywell (SGC)'s Mode S and (TCAS) avionics. The result is that ASDE-X aural conflict alerts provided to air traffic controllers also are transmitted at "virtually the same instant" to the cockpit(s) of affected airplanes, according to officials. The companies have conducted tests of the technology at the USA (FAA)'s ASDE-X facility at Hancock International Airport in Syracuse. ASDE-X uses a combination of surface movement radar and transponder multi-lateration sensors to show airplane and vehicle positions on an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower display and alert controllers to potential conflicts. It also supports ADS-B.
Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) Marketing Manager-Safety Systems, Rick Berckefeldt and Sensis Chief Strategy Officer, Marc Viggiano stressed that this "is not a product launch," but rather "a technology demonstration of what can be." No hardware changes are required and "we've borrowed a data link format that is part of the standard (TCAS) definition," Berckefeldt said.
Runway incursions are a significant challenge in the USA. Earlier this year, (FAA) Administrator, Marion Blakey proposed fast-tracking a Ground Proximity System (GPS)-based solution to give pilots (FC) a moving map display of their own-ship position on the airport surface.
While the technology demonstrated by Sensis and Honeywell does not provide pilots (FC) with a visual display, it will alert them to impending conflicts with other airplanes and ground vehicles. ASDE-X currently is commissioned at nine USA airports, with Chicago O'Hare and Charlotte coming online in August. The (FAA) has identified a total of 35 USA airports, that are candidates to receive ASDE-X, Sensis said.
September 2007: Honeywell (SGC) opened the Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) Mexicali Research & Technology Center containing advanced aerospace system integration laboratories, that will be used to develop and test next-generation technologies. The 100,000-sq-ft facility, which cost $35 million, employs more than >200 local engineers and technicians and initially will research and develop technologies for next-generation narrowbody airplanes such as the 737 and A320.
Boeing (TBC) said Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) joined its Integrated Materials Management initiative under which Boeing (TBC) and suppliers maintain an airline's inventory of spare parts.
Honeywell (SGC) was awarded a contract valued at $16 billion by Airbus (EDS) to supply major mechanical systems and provide aftermarket support on the A350 XWB, including designing and building the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for the airplane. "This is the largest mechanical systems contract Airbus (EDS) has ever awarded," Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) President, Air Transport & Regional, Garrett Mikita said. In addition to the (APU), Honeywell (SGC) will provide integrated systems to manage all of the air used on the airplane to control the cabin environment, including heating, cooling and cabin pressurization. The "air management system" will be "specifically designed" for the A350, Honeywell (SGC) said. Mikita said that the "new HGT1700 (APU) is a high-power-density gas turbine, that will deliver the pneumatic and electric power requirements for the airplane's cabin conditioning and main engine starting." The 1,700-hp unit will be designed to start and operate at altitudes up to 43,000 ft. "This (APU) is a new design for Airbus (EDS)," he explained. The contract is a sign of Airbus (EDS)'s new way of building airplane under its "Power8" initiative, the two companies said. "The first contract signed with a major equipment supplier for the A350, is the first concrete example of our new way of working with our suppliers, who are now becoming real partners," Airbus (EDS) Executive VP Programs & Procurement, Tom Williams said. Added Mikita: "A good portion of design and integration would have been done by them in the past. This single-supplier contract is a bold step for them." The contract's total value includes revenue expected to be generated by aftermarket support over 20 to 25 years.
November 2007: Honeywell (SGC) announced that it signed a contract with AirTran Airways (CQT) to supply avionics systems on new airplanes and provide maintenance on Honeywell (SGC) products across the airline's entire fleet through 2030. The contract, which builds on an existing agreement with the Orlando Low Cost Carrier (LCC) (CQT), has a value of $1 billion, of which around 50% to 55% represents new business, according to Honeywell (SGC) VP Airlines, Mike Madsen. Avionics to be provided for AirTran (CQT)'s 737NG fleet include (EGPWS), ACAS II, weather radar with forward looking windshear detection, (FDR)s and (CVR)s, (ACARS), and the Flight Data Acquisition & Management System. The support side of the deal is structured on a cost-per-flight-hour basis, and covers Honeywell (SGC) products on AirTran (CQT)'s 717s through 2023 and 737NGs through 2030. Systems include avionics, lighting, mechanical components, (APU)s, wheels and brakes. "This is the largest aftermarket contract Honeywell (SGC) has ever signed," Madsen said.
February 2008: Honeywell (SGC) will provide the full suite of avionics for Kingfisher Airlines (KFH) A320s, A330s, and A340s as well the 131-9A (APU) for its A320s. Systems include (EGPWS), (ACAS) II, Weather Radar with Forward-Looking Windshear Detection, (FDR) and (CVR), Quantum Line (CNS), (FMS) and (ADIRS). Kingfisher (KFH) also selected high-speed satcom on its A330 and A340 fleets. In addition, Honeywell (SGC) will maintain the (APU)s. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Honeywell (SGC) signed a $33 million agreement to provide wheels and brakes for China Eastern Airlines (CEA)'s new 737NGs. Delivery of the 14 737-700s and six 737-800s began in 2007 and will continue through 2010.
The company (SGC) will provide integrated service and repair on Air China (BEJ)'s 180 737, 747, 767, A320, and A340 airplanes, as well as future deliveries. The five-year contract covers the main engine starter.
Honeywell (SGC) received (TSO) approval from the USA (FAA) for its Aircraft Environment Surveillance System (AESS). It said the (AESS) is "the first and only" integrated surveillance system to obtain this approval. The system combines (TCAS), Mode S transponders, (EGPWS), and RDR-4000 weather radar into a single unit.
May 2008: Airbus (EDS) announced in Toulouse a partnership with JetBlue Airways (JBL), (IAE), Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and Honeywell's (UOP) subsidiary "to pursue development of a sustainable second-generation biofuel for use in commercial airplanes." The new venture will endeavor to develop renewal energy technology to convert vegetable- and algae-based oils into jet fuel. (UOP) already has developed "process technology to convert natural oils and greases to military jet fuel" as a drop-in replacement as part of a project funded by the USA Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the technology also will work for commercial jet fuel. "Biofuels hold tremendous potential to meet growing fuel demand, while reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions," said Jennifer Holmgren, Director Renewable Energy & Chemicals business for (UOP). "This partnership brings together a range of aviation and process technology expertise to study and verify the best path toward sustainable use of biofuels in aviation." Airbus (EDS) Head of Alternative Fuels Research Programs, Sebastien Remy said second-generation biojet could provide up to 30% of all commercial aviation jet fuel by 2030. In February, Airbus (EDS) flew an A380 powered partially by a gas-to-liquid alternative fuel from Filton to Toulouse; while Boeing (TBC) conducted a biofuel test flight in partnership with (GE) Aviation (GEC) and Virgin Atlantic Airways (VAA).
June 2008: Honeywell (SGC) will acquire Intelligent Automation Corp (IAC), pending regulatory review under a contract signing just made. Based in Poway, California, (IAC) supplies on board diagnostics for military and commercial helicopters, as well health and usage monitoring systems for fixed-wing airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles and ground vehicles.
Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) said that it has reached agreement to sell its Consumables Solutions business that distributes fasteners and aerospace hardware to B/E Aerospace for $1.05 billion, pending regulatory approval. The transaction, which is expected to close in the third quarter, includes at least $800 million in cash and the rest in shares of B/E common stock. "While Consumables Solutions is a growing business, it no longer fits with Honeywell Aerospace (SGC)'s strategic focus on more advanced technologies for the entire airplane," Honeywell Aerospace (SGC), President & CEO, Rob Gillette said.
Honeywell's Consumables Solutions posted $524 million in revenue last year. The company distributes aerospace hardware and fasteners and offers logistics services to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)s, airlines, repair shops, flight service centers, and distributors. "B/E Aerospace's focus on the distribution of commodities makes this business a better place for Consumables Solutions' growth over the long term," Gillette said. "We look forward to working with B/E Aerospace under long-term supply and license agreements."
July 2008: Honeywell (SGC) was selected by Boeing (TBC) to supply catalytic ozone converters as an option for 737NGs, 747s, and 767s and as standard equipment for the 747-8. The ozone converter is used to reduce ozone levels in the cabin that can cause passenger discomfort.
Honeywell (SGC) announced an $80 million Airbus (EDS) contract to upgrade wingtip navigation lighting on A320s with (LED) technology.
Honeywell (SGC) won a 10-year extension on its contract with Southwest Airlines (SWA) to provide Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) for avionics and mechanical products on 737s. The contract covers up to 520 airplanes plus future deliveries and includes Honeywell (SGC) (APU)s, (HMU)s, lighting, components, and wheels and brakes.
August 2008: SR Technics (SWS) signed an agreement with Avtrade Ltd to provide Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) and loan services for a range of Honeywell (SGC) Auxilliary Power Units (APU)s, including the 131-9A, 131-9B, 85 Series, 331-200ER, 331-250, 331-350C, and 660-4.
September 2008: Boeing (TBC) and Honeywell (SGC) subsidiary, UOP have brought together a group of airlines and environmental organizations that will work to accelerate the development and commercialization of new sustainable aviation fuels. The Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG) will work with the World Wildlife Fund and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and makes commercial aviation the first global transportation sector to drive sustainability practices into its fuel supply chain voluntarily. (SAFUG)'s charter is to enable the commercial use of renewable fuel sources that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while lessening commercial aviation's exposure to oil price volatility and dependence on fossil fuels.
Initial airlines involved are Air New Zealand (ANZ), Air France (AFA), (ANA), Cargolux (CLX), Gulf Air (GUL), Japan Airlines (JAL), (KLM), (SAS), and Virgin Atlantic Airways (VAA), which account collectively for 15% of commercial jet fuel use. Others, such as Continental Airlines (CAL), are expected to join. All members subscribe to a sustainability pledge stipulating that any sustainable biofuel must perform as well as or better than kerosene-based fuel but with a smaller carbon lifecycle. The group pledged to consider only renewable fuel sources with minimal impacts to the biosphere. In addition, cultivation and harvest of plant stocks must provide socioeconomic value to local communities.
"This task force comes at just the right time to help airlines cut costs and decrease their greenhouse gas emissions," said Liz Barratt-Brown, (NRDC) senior attorney and keynote speaker at June's Eco-Aviation conference presented by Air Transport World and Leeham Co in Washington.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes Managing Director Environmental Strategy, Billy Glover added, "This is a tremendous opportunity for leading airlines, supported by well-respected energy and environmental organizations, to help commercial aviation take control of its future fuel supply in terms of origin, sustainability and environmental impacts."
(SAFUG) announced two initial sustainability research projects. Yale University's School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, through funding provided by Boeing (TBC), will conduct the first peer-reviewed comprehensive sustainability assessment of jatropha curcas, to include lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions and the socioeconomic impacts to farmers in developing nations. Similarly, (NRDC) will conduct a comprehensive assessment of algae to ensure it meets the group's sustainability criteria.
October 2008: CTT Systems said it will supply Nord-Micro with its Cair System cabin humidifiers and Zonal Drying System designed for the A350 XWB. Nord-Micro will deliver the systems to Honeywell (SGC) to offer as an option to Airbus (EDS) and airlines.
November 2008: The world's first commercial aviation test flight powered by a sustainable second-generation biofuel will take place on December 3 on an Air New Zealand (ANZ) 747-400 with a jatropha blend powering one of the Rolls-Royce (RR) (RB211) engines. The flight is a joint initiative among (ANZ), Boeing (TBC), Rolls (RR) and (UOP), a Honeywell (SGC) company. The jatropha-based fuel, a 50/50 blend with Jet A1, has been certified as suitable by Rolls (RR). The jatropha crude oil was converted successfully to biojet fuel using "proprietary" (UOP) fuel processing technology, "marking the world's first large-scale production run of a commercially viable and sustainable biofuel for aviation use," according to the companies. In a statement, Rolls (RR) fuels specialist, Chris Lewis said testing "showed the final blend has excellent properties meeting, and in many cases exceeding, the stringent technical requirements for fuels used in civil and defense airplanes. The blended fuel therefore meets the essential requirement of being a 'drop-in' fuel, meaning its properties will be virtually indistinguishable from conventional Jet A1 fuel." The jatropha oil comes from southeastern Africa (Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania) and India. It was sourced from seeds grown on environmentally sustainable farms. The jatropha plant produces seeds containing inedible lipid oil used to produce the fuel. It can grow across a range of difficult conditions, including arid and otherwise nonarable areas.
The partners have insisted that any environmentally sustainable fuel must meet social, technical, and commercial criteria. They enlisted Terasol Energy to certify independently that the fuel met those standards.
Honeywell (SGC) signed a 10-year contract with Kunpeng Airlines to provide Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) on EMB-190 components, avionics and lighting. Valued at $21 million, the agreement covers more than >65 Honeywell (SGC) parts. Kunpeng took delivery of its first AMB-190 in September and expects 50 airplanes over the next four years.
Honeywell (SGC) will supply China Eastern Airlines (CEA) with its 131-9A (APU) for 30 forthcoming A320s. The deal includes a 10-year maintenance agreement and covers additional A320 deliveries over the next three years.
December 2008: (TBC) announced a deal with Southwest Airlines (SWA) to serve as lead integrator for the carrier's 737-300/-700 flight deck upgrade to incorporate performance-based navigation capabilities. The contract includes design, installation and integration of hardware and software from multiple suppliers, as well as flight testing and certification. The integration program calls for 737-300 modification with avionics supplied by (GE) Aviation (GEC), Honeywell (SGC) and Rockwell Collins. (GE) Aviation (GEC) said it won a $40 million deal with (SWA) to provide its SDS-6000 large area display suite. Systems will be installed on up to 150 airplanes. First production deliveries are slated for early 2011.
Continental Airlines (CAL) announced plans for a biofuel demonstration flight on January 7 in conjunction with Boeing (TBC), (CFM) International, and Honeywell (SGC), the first of its kind by a USA airline. A 737-800 carrying no passengers "will be powered by a special fuel blend, including components derived from algae and jatropha plants," (CAL) said, calling the fuel sources "sustainable, second-generation . . . that don't impact food crops or water resources, and don't contribute to deforestation." Sapphire Energy will provide the algae-based fuel and Terrasol will supply the jatropha-derived fuel. The fuel used in one of the 737's two (CFM56-7B) engines will be a blend of 50% traditional jet fuel and 50% biofuel. "This flight represents another step in (CAL)'s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and identifying sustainable, long-term fuel solutions for the aviation industry," Chairman & CEO, Larry Kellner said. (CAL) said that it has worked with Boeing (TBC), Honeywell (SGC) refining technology developer (UOP) and (CFM) for more than nine months on the research, production and testing of the biofuel, including laboratory and ground-based jet engine performance testing.
Japan Airlines (JAL) said that it will operate a 747-300 test flight from Tokyo Haneda on January 30 in conjunction with Boeing (TBC), Pratt & Whitney (PWC) and Honeywell (SGC). It will use biofuel primarily derived from camelina plants. A blend of 50% biofuel and 50% traditional jet fuel will be tested in one of the airplane's four (JT9D) engines. The biofuel will be a mixture of three second-generation feedstocks: Camelina (84%), jatropha (under 16%) and algae (under 1%). The flight will be the first using fuel derived from camelina and the first to use a combination of three feedstocks. It also will be the first biofuel test flight on an airplane powered by Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines. It will last about 1 hour. (JAL) Environmental Affairs VP, Yasunori Abe said, "In the air, we will check the engine's performance during normal and non-normal flight operations, which will include quick accelerations and decelerations and engine shutdown and restart."
January 2009: Honeywell (SGC) announced full-year 2008 sales increased +6% to $36.6 billion from $34.6 billion in 2007. Earnings per share were up +19% to $3.76 versus $3.16 in the prior year. Cash flow from operations was $3.8 billion and free cash flow (cash flow from operations less capital expenditures), excluding cash taxes relating to the sale of the Consumables Solutions (CS) business, was $3.1 billion. Free cash flow conversion (free cash flow divided by net income) was 110% of net income for the full-year, excluding the CS taxes.
Fourth quarter sales were $8.7 billion versus $9.3 billion in 2007. Earnings per share were $0.97 versus $0.91 in the prior year fourth quarter. Cash flow from operations was $1.3 billion and excluding CS taxes, free cash flow was $1.1 billion. Fourth quarter free cash flow conversion was 155% of net income, excluding the CS taxes.
"Having great positions in good industries combined with strong execution drove Honeywell's performance and growth in a tough 2008 economic environment," said Honeywell Chairman & CEO, Dave Cote. "Our key initiatives, including the Honeywell Operating System, Velocity Product Development and Functional Transformation, are working, and we're a much stronger company today because of their ongoing global implementation. In 2008, we were awarded large multi-year contracts and continued to be a strong cash generator. We also made acquisitions to bolster our portfolio, completed meaningful share repurchases, and increased the dividend rate." "2009 will be a more challenging year," concluded Cote. "However, the actions we've taken over the past several years will benefit us in this economic downturn and have made (SGC) a more efficient, innovative, and productive company. We are well positioned and confident in our ability to outperform in 2009 and over the long-term."
March 2009: Sustainable biofuels could be in use by airlines by 2014, experts confirmed. "We think it is quite reasonable that there will be commercial availability of some type in the next 3 to 5 years," (TBC) Managing Director Environmental Strategies, Bill Glover said. "One of the key enablers is really feedstock availability, the right feedstocks being available at the right price and with the right sustainability . . . It's a market that is going to evolve exponentially," added Jennifer Holmgren, VP & General Manager Renewable Energy & Chemical for UOP, a Honeywell (SGC) subsidiary, who along with Glover, participated on a panel at the Aviation & Environment Summit in Geneva. She suggested steps may be necessary to "incentivize the first movers."
Airbus (EDS) VP Sustainability & Eco-Efficiency, Christian Dumas said that by 2025 "quite a bit of biofuel could be available . . . and we hope we could go faster than that." He and others cited price as a key unknown.
Glover noted that at the environmental summit, DHL announced it is sponsoring the planting of 24 million jatropha plants in Malawi this year and over the next five years intends to plant 250 million. Last week, Glover testified that aviation biofuels from jatropha, camelina and halophytes will be first, with algae a longer-term solution. Holmgren said that another source, cellulosic material, could become available as well in "a five-year timeframe," although she noted there are challenges to be overcome.
Speaking at the (FAA) Aviation Forecast Conference in Washington, (TBC) President & CEO, Scott Carson said he has been informed that camelina "is now going to planted on thousands of more acres [in North and South Dakota] than was planned [in those states] before the (JAL) test flight." (JAL) earlier this year operated a 747-300 partially powered by fuel derived primarily from camelina. Carson stated that plant oil-derived biofuels are "the future of our industry" and dismissed as "naysayers" those who have questioned whether such energy sources are viable. "These are sustainable plant-based fuel sources that don't compete with food crops," he said, adding that the test flights by (JAL) and other carriers produced "initial results that are positive and included a dramatic improvement in carbon emissions on the test airplane."
(GE) Sensing & Inspection Technologies announced a 25-year pressure sensor contract with Honeywell (SGC), which will use them on the A350 XWB's air management and conditioning system. The contract is expected to generate $80 million, (GE) said.
(SGC) said Qantas (QAN) received approval from Australia's (CASA) to use the (SGC) SmartPath Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) at Sydney for satellite-based landings on (QAN)'s A380s. (QAN) previously had been approved to fly (GBAS) approaches with its 737s, recording more than >1,600 (GBAS) landings at Sydney to date.
(SGC) provided upgraded satellite communications equipment to Malaysia Airlines (MAS) that will permit passengers to use mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)s in-flight as part of a pilot program through mid-2009. (SGC)'s HD710 high-speed data satcom unit replaces the high-power amplifier (HPA) with a unit that contains both the (HPA) and a high-speed data unit.
April 2009: Honeywell (SGC) said Wizz Air (WZZ) selected a safety and navigational avionics suite and the 131-9A Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for installation on 70 new Wizz Air Hungary (WZZ) A320s, with a long-term service agreement on the (APU).

(SGC) announced that (AWAS) (AWW) has selected an avionics suite and (APU)s under a contract covering up to 110 new airplane deliveries and worth $77 million.
September 2009: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) was selected by Hainan Airlines (HNA) to provide 131-9A Auxilliary Power Units (APU)s for 13 A320s, with deliveries scheduled for 2010 to 2012. The contract is valued at more than >$11 million and covers maintenance through 2022.
(SGC) signed a $65 million contract with China Southern Airlines (GUN) to provide 131-9A (APU)s, along with materials, parts and service, for 192 airplanes (36 existing A320s, 71 existing 737s, 20 ordered A320s and 65 ordered 737s).
(SGC) said Memphis International will become the first USA airport to deploy its Smartpath Precision Landing System early next year following approval by the (FAA). The ground-based augmentation system initially will supplement legacy instrument landing systems and later replace Instrument Landing System (ILS) by augmenting Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment "to provide precision approach guidance to all qualifying runways," the (FAA) said. "It monitors the (GPS) signals to detect errors and augment accuracy by transmitting correction messages to airplanes via local radio broadcast."
The (FAA) said its plan for implementing a satellite-based NextGen Air Traffic Control (ATC) system "identifies (GBAS) as an enabler for descent and approach operations to increase capacity at crowded airports." Honeywell (SGC)'s system was approved for precision approach operations down to 200 ft above the surface. (GBAS) is aimed at supporting zero-visibility operations and enabling (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) operations. Airservices Australia soon is expected to approve a (GBAS) system for use in Sydney, the (FAA) said. "One SmartPath system installed in a typical airport can yield annual maintenance savings of up to $400,000 compared to a single (ILS)," Honeywell VP USA Defense Customers, Vicki Panhuise said. SmartPath already is operating in Bremen and Malaga.
November 2009: Honeywell (SGC) announced a (TCAS) upgrade to include the Change 7.1 standard. It said the upgrade includes ADS-B technology that will provide pilots (FC) with previously unavailable air traffic data.
Honeywell (SGC) announced that Garuda Indonesia (GIA) selected its IntuVue 3-D advanced weather radar as part of a package of avionics to equip 25 737-800s plus 25 options. The order was valued at more than >$28 million by (SGC). The package also includes communication and navigation sensors comprising Multi-Mode Receiver, radio altimeter and (ADF), CAS 100 (ACAS), flight voice and data recorders, Flight Data Acquisition & Management Systems, airborne data loader, cockpit data printer and Automatic Fixed Emergency Locator Transmitter.
(SGC) said Air New Zealand (ANZ) extended by seven years two of its wheels and brakes service agreements for 737 Classics and 767-300s.
Air Arabia (ABZ) has picked Honeywell (SGC) to supply auxiliary power units (APUs) for its fleet of A320s on order. The $36-million agreement calls for (SGC) 131-9A (APU)s for up to 44 airplanes through 2016. Paolo Carmassi, President Europe, Middle East, Africa and India for (SGC), notes that the (APU)s will lower fuel burn by -5% and reduce on-airplane maintenance by around -36%.
December 2009: Honeywell (SGC) said Volaris (VLS) will use its (LED) technology to upgrade A320 navigation wingtip lighting on 20 airplanes.
January 2010: Boeing (TBC), Etihad Airways (EHD), Honeywell (SGC)'s (UOP) subsidiary and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (an Abu Dhabi-based research and graduate program partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)) announced an agreement to establish a major initiative dedicated to developing "sustainable energy solutions." The Sustainable Bioenergy Research Project (SBRP) will use integrated saltwater agricultural systems to support the development and commercialization of biofuel sources for aviation and co-products.
Masdar will host the (SBRP) and provide laboratory and demonstration facilities in and near Masdar City, which aims to be the world's first zero-carbon city. "Together with the Abu Dhabi government, Etihad Airways (EHD) and other industry leaders, we are forging our energy future by developing a renewable fuel supply now, not when fossil fuels are depleted," Boeing Commercial Airplanes (TBC) President & CEO, Jim Albaugh said. (UOP) VP & General Manager Renewable Energy & Chemicals, Jennifer Holmgren said the (SBRP) "is a unique opportunity to showcase the viability of a geographically optimized solution and the availability of solutions that produce high-quality, green transportation fuels."
The partnership said saltwater will be used "to create an aquaculture-based seafood farming system in parallel with the growth of mangrove forests and salicornia, a plant that thrives in salty conditions." The "closed-loop" 2-sq-km system will produce an "affordable, nutrient-rich" fertilizer that will aid in the production of biomass that can be used to create aviation biofuel and other products. "Developing low-cost, non-petroleum fertilizers is one of the keys to achieving genuine carbon emissions reductions from any biofuel source," the group said.
In a rare joint award, Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and Rockwell Collins were selected for the Air Transport World (ATW) magazine's "Aviation Technology Achievement Award" to recognize their advanced cockpit weather radars. These systems are playing a vital role in improving safety of flight, reducing turbulence-related injuries and boosting operational efficiency. "Competition drives innovation and technological advancement. As Rockwell Collins and (SGC) have sought to leapfrog each other in weather radar technology, the beneficiaries have been flight crews (FC) and the flying public," (ATW) Editorial Director, Perry Flint said.
Oman Air (OMR) will install both Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir on its A330 fleet starting next month, with installation scheduled to be complete over the summer. The airplanes have been fitted with the Airbus (EDS) ALNA V2 system, using Honeywell (SGC)'s SwiftBroadband solution.
February 2010: Honeywell (SGC) said that Indonesia's Lion Air (MLI) extended an avionics selection for 78 additional 737NGs, completing the entire 737 fleet of 178 airplanes with (SGC) avionics, including its IntuVue 3-D Weather Radar. Other systems include the CAS 100 ACAS with ADS-B, Quantum Line comm/nav radios, High Frequency Radio CNS, Solid-State Recorders, FDAMS and Rescu 406 ELT.
Honeywell (SGC) will provide an avionics suite for Hainan Airlines (HNA)'s 13 A320 deliveries beginning in 2010 with options for 30 more. The package includes the ADIRU, ACAS, CVR and FDR, EGPWS and Air Traffic Services Unit with Airline Operational Communication software.
(SGC) will provide wheel and brake carbon materials for Qantas (QAN)'s fleet of six A380s as well as 14 additional airplanes on order. It will provide (APU) repair and overhaul services for China Eastern Airlines (CEA)'s 331-350 (APU)s on 20 A330s and five A340s over the next 10 years.
Honeywell (SGC) announced that Jeju Air (JJA) will replace the wheels and brakes on its 737s with (SGC) wheels and steel brakes. It extended an agreement with Vietnam Airlines (VIE) covering (APU) Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) for three more years; the deal covers 36-300, 331-350, 36-150RR and 331-500 APUs on two F70s, 10 A320s, five A330s and 10 777s. It finalized a 10-year maintenance agreement with Singapore Airlines (SIA) covering its IntuVue 3-D weather radar on (SIA)'s fleet of 19 777-300ERs.
April 2010: Honeywell (SGC) said GoJet Airlines extended to 2023 its maintenance agreement, increasing aftermarket service and support on Honeywell (SGC) products to include six recently delivered CRJ-700s and bringing the total number of airplanes covered to 25. The contract is valued at $4.5 million. (SGC) equipment covered by the agreement includes (EGPWS), start control valves and air turbine starters.
Honeywell (SGC) signed a 10-year contract with US Airways (AMW)/(USA) to provide inventory management and maintenance for 331-200 Auxiliary Power Units (APU)s on its fleet of 757s and 767s.
May 2010: Boeing (TBC), along with Honeywell's (SGC) (UOP), United Technologies, and (AECOM), will work with Air China (BEJ) and PetroChina in a collaborative effort to establish a sustainable aviation biofuel industry in China as part of a broader sustainable aviation biofuel agreement between China's National Energy Administration and the USA Trade and Development Agency.
The strategic effort, which will promote the commercialization of aviation biofuels in China through the USA - China Energy Cooperation Program, is slated to begin in June and will look at all phases of sustainable aviation biofuel development including agronomy, energy inputs and outputs, life cycle emissions analysis, infrastructure and government policy support.
Air China (BEJ), PetroChina, Boeing (TBC) and Honeywell (SGC)'s (UOP) have agreed to conduct an inaugural flight using Honeywell (SGC) Green Jet Fuel, which already has been used for biofuel demonstration flights with Air New Zealand (ANZ), Continental Airlines (CAL), Japan Airlines (JAL), and (KLM) Royal Dutch Airlines.
Additional information, such as launch date and location, will be announced at a later date. The collaborations were announced at the joint opening of the Renewable Energy and Advanced Biofuel Forum in Beijing.
June 2010: USA (FAA) Administrator, Randy Babbitt announced at Air Transport World (ATW)'s "Eco-Aviation" Conference that the (FAA) has awarded $125 million to five companies to "develop and demonstrate technologies that will reduce commercial jet fuel consumption, emissions and noise."
The five-year contracts are part of the (FAA)'s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise program, or (CLEEN). The five companies:- Boeing (TBC), GE Aviation (GEC), Honeywell (SGC), Pratt & Whitney (PWC), and Rolls-Royce-North America (RRC), each will match the agency's investment dollar-for-dollar, bringing the total (CLEEN) investment to $250 million.
Delivering the keynote luncheon address at the conference in Washington, Babbitt acknowledged that commercial aviation has made "phenomenal progress" over the last decade in becoming more environmentally efficient but said the industry must "do more" to address "a national crisis with our environment that extends well beyond aviation. The (FAA) is going to push as hard as humanly possible to improve aviation's environmental efficiency."
He said technology developed through (CLEEN) "could be introduced into the commercial airplane fleet beginning in 2015. The goals of these research and demonstration efforts include: A reduction in fuel burn by -33%, a reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions by -60% and a reduction in cumulative airplane noise levels by 32 decibels. As early as 2015, you and I could be flying on quieter, cleaner, more efficient airplanes that are operating on alternative fuel."
Boeing (TBC) said it will receive $25 million from the (FAA) and contribute another $25 million to "conduct flight demonstrations of emergent airframe and engine technologies that have the potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and community noise." The technologies include adaptive wing trailing edges and ceramic matrix composite acoustic engine nozzles, (TBC) said, adding that they will be flight tested aboard a 737 in 2012 and "a yet-to-be-determined twin-aisle airplane in 2013."
(GEC) said the combined (CLEEN) investment of itself and the (FAA) will be "up to $66 million." (GEC) added that the contract "will help fund…[development of the] TAPS II combustor, open rotor and Flight Management System-Air Traffic Management (FMS-ATM) technologies." (GEC) will work with Lockheed Martin, AirDat and Alaska Airlines (ASA) to develop and demonstrate the technologies.
Honeywell (SGC) said it will use the contract money "to develop mature technology for fuel burn reduction and test aviation biofuels for use in Honeywell (SGC) turbine engines." It will use its (TECH7000) turbofan test engine as the basis for its research and work in conjunction with its (UOP) business.
Pratt & Whitney (PWC) said it will develop and demonstrate "low noise, highly efficient fans" and "low-emissions combustors" as part of the (CLEEN) program.
Babbitt said the "(CLEEN) consortium of companies" will meet twice annually to discuss progress on technological development. Asked which types of alternative fuels the (FAA) is interested in seeing developed, he said, "Everything is on the table."
The Latin American Airline Association (ALTA) announced that TAM (TPR) will operate Latin America's first biofuel demonstration flight in the second half of 2010 using an A320 partially powered by fuel derived from jatropha. The flight will be conducted in conjunction with Airbus (EDS) and (CFM) International. The (CFM56-5B)-powered airplane will utilize biofuel derived from jatropha oil refined by Honeywell (SGC)'s (UOP). According to (ALTA), TAM (TPR) has acquired jatropha seeds from throughout Brazil via the Brazilian Association of Jatropha Producers and will pass along the seeds to (UOP).
TAM (TPR) CEO, Líbano Barroso said, "We have put forth our best efforts to use Brazilian raw materials in the production of this biofuel, with significant economic and social gains. A source of aviation biokerosene, the [jatropha] biomass is 100% domestic, resulting from family agricultural projects and large farms in the hinterlands of Brazil."
(ALTA) added that "considering the natural resources and the favorable climatic conditions [in Brazil], a large amount of degraded pastures might be recovered with this [jatropha] plant. To be able to attain a commercial scale, estimates show that it would be necessary to expand the cultivated surface by about one million hectares, sufficient to service approximately 20% of the domestic consumption."
It said Michigan Technological University/(UOP) tests "show that aviation biofuels made from jatropha . . . can achieve a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions [of] 65% to 80% relative to petroleum-derived jet fuel."
Honeywell (SGC) signed a contract with Tiger Airways (TGR) to provide a full suite of safety avionics including its IntuVue 3-D weather radar for (TGR)'s 50 new A319/A320s. The airplanes are expected to be delivered starting in late 2010 and continuing through 2015. Honeywell (SGC)'s full suite will include an Air Data Inertial Reference Unit, Flight Management System, next-generation Aircraft Collision & Avoidance System, Flight Data Recorder, Cockpit Voice Recorder and Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System.
September 2010: Honeywell (SGP) (UOP) says its plant-derived jet fuel will be ready for commercial production within two to three years, and the company has begun seeking the required certifications. Oils derived from algae, camelina and other plants have been successfully tested by the US Navy and Air Force. Currently, the biofuel is combined 50:50 with traditional jet fuel, but the company says a 100% biofuel is on the horizon.
October 2010: Honeywell (SGC) was chosen by easyJet (EZY) Airline Company Ltd to provide its fuel-efficient 131-9A auxiliary power unit (APU) and extended maintenance service for their A320 airplanes in a 10-year, $51 million contract. (SGC)'s 131-9A (APU) is the most commonly used (APU) for single-aisle commercial transport and generates greater fuel efficiency on each airplane on which it is utilized.
March 2011: Dallas Airmotive received Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) authorization to supply turbofan engine and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) support services for the Asia/Pacific region, including major periodic inspection services on (TFE731) engines, and line authorizations on (CFE738) and (HTF7000) engines and (APU)s (36 series, RE100, RE220). It also plans to add mobile response teams in Singapore, Hong Kong and eastern Australia this year, and an (MPI) shop in Singapore for (TFE731) inspections in January 2012.
April 2011: Interjet (AAE) and Airbus (EDS) are scheduled to conduct the first Jatropha-based bio-fuel flight in Mexico using an A320. The bio-fuel is made from locally sourced Jatropha plant harvested in the southern state of Chiapas. The aim of the demonstration flight and the project is to speed up the commercialization of aviation bio-fuel in Mexico.
The A320 flight is planned from Mexico City’s International Airport to Angel Albino Corzo of Tuxtla Gutierrez airport in the southern State of Chiapas, with one of the two (CFM) engines using 30% bio-fuel. The Jatropha bio-fuel has been processed by Honeywell’s (SGC) (UOP).
“The test flight is the realiZation of a two year ambition for (AAE) to develop a production chain for renewable bio-fuel, with the purpose of creating a Mexican platform for sustainable aviation bio-kerosene,” said Miguel Aleman, (AAE) President.
“(EDS), (AAE) and the many stakeholders involved in making today’s flight a reality, have taken an important step towards establishing an aviation bio-fuel solution that is both commercially viable and environmentally sustainable,” said Paul Nash, (EDS) Head of New Energies.” This flight serves as evidence that our sector is serious about its commitment to achieve carbon neutral growth by 2020, and a -50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels.”
The project is being supported by Mexico’s Secretariat of Communications & Transportation (SCT), Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), the State of Chiapas, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), (CFM) and (EDS) to ensure the bio-fuel meets all specification for flight without any changes to the aircraft or engines. CO2 life cycle studies show that Jatropha has the potential to reduce the overall CO2 footprint by up to -80% over standard aviation kerosene.
(EDS) has developed a road map working towards making alternative fuel and bio-fuel technology a reality for aviation, while exploring all types of sustainable alternative fuels to find sustainable and local bio-fuel solutions for local communities.
October 2011: Air China (BEJ), Boeing (TBC) plus Chinese and USA aviation energy partners conducted China’s first sustainable biofuel flight, a two-hour maintained flight in a 747-400 from Beijing Capital International Airport using biofuel sourced in China.
PetroChina, working with Honeywell (SGC)’s (UOP), sourced and refined the China-grown, jatropha-based biofuel aboard the 747, which was powered by Pratt & Whitney engines. China National Aviation Fuel blended the biofuel with traditional jet fuel and also provided airplane fueling support.
Air China (BEJ) and Boeing (TBC) are working on plants for an international flight between the USA and China fueled by sustainable biofuel.
November 2011: Honeywell Process Solutions will invest its engineering services and equipment to accelerate the commercial deployment of AliphaJet’s renewable drop-in biofuels, (SGC) announced at the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative Expo in Washington.
AliphaJet will use Honeywell Controls, instrumentation and advanced solutions, including its Experion Process Knowledge System and UniSim process simulators and field instrumentation.
"AliphaJet's ability to produce drop-in jet fuel on a small and widely distributed basis is the perfect complement to our own in-house technologies," Honeywell Process Solutions VP Americas, Tracey Haslam said.
AliphaJet’s catalytic method for making biofuel from products, such as plant and animal triglycerides and/or fatty acids, removes all oxygen from the renewable oils without needing large amounts of hydrogen gas or co-location at a traditional oil refinery.
The company said its process can also produce renewable drop-in diesel fuel, gasoline and other hydrocarbon molecules. The method has the ability to use renewable oil feedstocks from plants, animal processing or oil production methods such as algae and genetically modified organisms: seeds/vegetables (camelina, pennycress, palm, soy, corn), animal fats (beef, chicken), algae (Sapphire, Solazyme), GMO (Amyris, LS9, Genomatica).
December 2011: Honeywell (SGC) signed a distributor agreement with commercial airplane spare parts supplier American General Supplies. The deal is intended to make its range of avionics, mechanical components, wheels and brakes and the support of its global Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO) services, readily available to commercial airline customers throughout Africa.
February 2012: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) has signed contracts with five Asia/Pacific airlines: Solaseed Air (SNU), Jeju Air (JJA), Eastar Jet (EJS), China Eastern Airlines (CEA) and Air China (BEJ).
Honeywell (SGC) announced at the Singapore Airshow this week it has been selected by Jeju Air (JJA) to provide a suite of avionics for its new 737-800s, and won a three-year maintenance contract from Eastar Jet that covers its fleet of 737-800s.
The company also renewed its strategic relationship with (CEA), under which it provides wheels and brakes for 737s as well as an avionics package and 131-9 (APU)s for 50 new A320s. It also extended an agreement with (BEJ) to provide avionics and wheels and brakes. The Solaseed Air (SNU) contract covers (APU) support.
“We have a huge focus on the Asia/Pacific,” Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) President Aerospace Asia, Briand Greer said. “From a macro-economic perspective, its growing quite a bit - - there’s an overall (GDP) of 6.5%.”
The company moved its regional headquarters from Singapore to Shanghai, China, five years ago and has seen +19% annual growth. It is in the process of constructing two more buildings on site, and expects its 750-person workforce at the location to double in the next two years.
“We’re focused on China. We’ve won four systems on the (COMAC) (CCC) C919, and we’re in the process of signing those master contracts and the joint ventures. We’re showcasing our (ATM) technology also, by helping China try and relieve some of that bottleneck that’s happening there.”
Indonesia is another focus area. “We think there is a huge potential for Indonesia to grow,” Greer said.
Although the company noted in its fourth-quarter and year-end results it expects a more challenging macro environment and moderate growth in the 2012 first half, the year as a whole is looking good.
March 2012: Honeywell (SGC) has signed a General Terms Agreement with Emirates Airline (EAD) to provide repair and overhaul support for (EAD)'s avionic and mechanic components on its A330 and A340 airplanes and 777, for five years.
Boeing Business Jets (BCJ) has unveiled the latest 737 BBJ to enter service in Shanghai, China. The BBJ, a 737-700 with 737-800 wings and other modifications for longer range, was delivered earlier this month to a private businessman in the United States. It is the second BBJ for this customer. The interior was completed by Jet Tech of Spokane.
"Our repeat customers aren't limited to governments and charter companies, but include private individuals who love the comfort and capability of their BBJ so much, they buy another one," said Steve Taylor, BBJ President.
This is the first BBJ to enter service with Honeywell (SGC)'s Ovation Select digital system allowing the passengers to be just as productive onboard their airplane as they are in the office. "Ovation Select offers the latest technological advancements to deliver seamless and easy connectivity - whether passengers are connected via their BlackBerry, using their laptops or iPads or conducting a video conference call," said Tony Brancato, vice president for business and general aviation aftermarket at Honeywell Aerospace. "The modular, lightweight and flexible cabin management system provides component command and control, high-quality, crystal-clear surround sound audio and vivid full high-definition (1080p) video which is stunning to watch on the 42-inch and 46-inch high definition monitors found in this BBJ."

April 2012: Ten months after its $491 million acquisition of (EMS) Technologies (a connectivity solutions provider for mobile networking, mobile computers, and satellite communications) Honeywell (SGC) has signed an exclusive agreement with Inmarsat valued at $2.8 billion over 20 years to develop, produce and distribute the onboard hardware for its Global Xpress connectivity network. Under terms, Honeywell (SGC) will provide the external antenna, currently in two separate configurations (a tail-mount configuration primarily for business jets and a top fuselage-mount) as well as the satellite terminal equipment and other hardware.
Inmarsat had previously selected Rockwell Collins as its hardware provider for the Ka-band solution, however, the two companies recently “discontinued negotiations on an agreement to develop a joint global Ka broadband solution for the aviation industry,” Rockwell Collins said. “Accordingly, Rockwell Collins is evaluating alternative broadband solutions as part of its continued commitment to provide comprehensive connectivity offerings.”
Inmarsat is scheduled to launch the first Inmarsat-5 satellite in mid-2013 for the Ka-band Global Xpress service, and expects global coverage of the satellite to work in the 2014 timeframe.
“It’s very important that it’s global,” Honeywell VP, Marketing & Product Management, Carl Esposito said. “There are not good solutions today for global transatlantic, transpacific airplanes and there hasn’t been a satellite network developed the ground up for these types of mobile users. This is really the first satellite network for aerospace that was designed for mobility and mobile users.”
Honeywell (SGC) said it will also look at how to utilize the bandwidth, the mechanical systems, and the avionic systems onboard the airplane to enable “really innovative services” to improve the operation of the airplanes including the streaming of maintenance data.
“We acquired (EMS) Technologies, a satellite communication provider, really looking at [the] trends in the industry around airplane connectivity,” Esposito said. “We feel that the combination of (EMS) Technology and the Honeywell (SGC) portfolio is really a winning combination.”
May 2012: Honeywell (SGC) says it is starting one of the aviation industry's first comprehensive test programs for aviation biofuel.
(SGC) subsidiary, (UOP) will carry out the program in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada and Agrisoma Biosciences, earthtechling.com reported.
Blends of Honeywell (SGC) green jet fuel will be tested at higher ratios than used in previous demonstration flights, which to date have not exceeded a 50/50 blend of biofuel and petroleum-based jet fuel.
The biofuel being tested has been produced from a new non-food, industrial oilseed crop produced by Ottawa-based Agrisoma from Brassica carinata, belonging to a family of flowering plants that also includes cabbages and turnips, (SGC) said.
The crop can be raised in semiarid areas usually not utilized for good crop production, (SGC) said, so it would not compete with food crops for land resources, a common criticism raised by opponents of biofuel source crops.
Since aviation regulators first approved the use of biofuels in commercial flights last summer, several major airlines have conducted trial flights using a mix of petroleum-based fuel and fuel derived from crops.
AeroMexico (AMX) began using the Honeywell (SGC) biofuel last November, at an 85% petroleum/15% biofuel level, on a regular passenger service between Mexico City and San Jose, Costa Rica, one of the first uses of renewable fuels in everyday airplane passenger service.

July 2012: Honeywell International Inc rose the most in more than three years after reporting quarterly profit that beat analysts’ estimates, driven by commercial aerospace sales.
The shares advanced +6.7% to $58.18 at the close in New York, the biggest gain since April 2, 2009. Honeywell (SGC) has increased +7% this year.
Honeywell (SGC) is benefiting from an increase in airplane production as the Boeing Company (TBC), Airbus (EDS) and other planemakers seek to whittle down large backlogs of orders. Sales at Honeywell’s aerospace division (SGC), its second-largest, advanced +7.7% to $3.03 billion in the second quarter.
“We continue to see good growth in the commercial businesses partially offset by manageable declines in defense,” David Anderson, Honeywell’s Chief Financial Officer, said.
Net income in the second quater rose +11% to $902 million, or $1.14 a share, from $810 million, or $1.02, a year earlier, the Morris Township, New Jersey-based company said. Analysts projected $1.11, the average of 20 estimates compiled by "Bloomberg." Revenue rose +3.8% to $9.44 billion.
August 2012: New Delhi, India-based Samtel Avionics & Defense Systems announced a $5.1 million order to manufacture avionics equipment from Honeywell (SGC). “Samtel is also in discussion with Honeywell (SGC) for multiple display programs, and expects to get more business with the total potential value reaching up to
$100 Million over the next 5 - 7 years,” Samtel said.
The Indian manufacturer said production of the equipment for (SGC) will begin shortly, but did not specify when deliveries to (SGC) would be completed. The two companies did not state what specific products (SGC) was seeking to develop with the new order.
“Samtel and Honeywell (SGC) have had a successful relationship in the Avionics area and we are happy to take this relationship to the next level. Samtel is now poised to become India’s First Complete Avionics Firm in the private domain, and our partnerships with global giants such as (SGC) will help us cement our position,” said Puneet Kaura, Executive Director at Samtel.
September 2012: Thales (THL) will partner with Honeywell (SGC) to bring the global broadband airplane connectivity to the world aviation industry. The companies are working to integrate the Honeywell (SGC)-developed (GX) Aviation Ka-band satcom avionics and antenna systems, operating over Inmarsat’s (GX) Aviation Ka-band satellite constellation with Thales (THL) cabin network solutions. The combined offering will give commercial airline operators and their passengers four times the in-flight connectivity bandwidth enabling real-time TV channel viewing and social media connectivity, as well as virtual office functionality for video conferencing, the companies said.

January 2013: British Airways (BAB) has selected Honeywell (SGC)’s Next Generation flight management system to boost navigation database capacity for its fleet of 747s. Honeywell (SGC) said its NextGen system reduces the need for step climbing approaches at airports and provides reduced fuel burn and airplane emissions. (BAB) has implemented several Honeywell (SGC) safety systems across its 777 and A320 fleets since 2010, including the IntuVue 3-D weather radar and SmartRunway systems.
February 2013: Honeywell (SGC) won a contract valued at $2.8 billion from Embraer (EMB) to supply its Primus Epic avionics system for the second generation of EMB-Jet airplanes. The re-engined, upgraded airplane family program is expected to launch later this year with entry into service (EIS) in 2018.
The Honeywell (SGC) Primus Epic 2 integrated avionics system includes synthetic vision and advanced flight management to increase situational awareness and allow for more fuel-efficient, direct approaches at airports. The five 8x10 inch displays on the current generation of EMB-Jets will be replaced by four 13x10 inch large landscape displays and Honeywell (SGC)’s Next Generation Flight Management System will provide enhanced flight planning, navigation and aircraft performance capabilities.
The re-engined EMB-Jet family will be powered exclusively by Pratt & Whitney (PRW) geared turbofan engines. Embraer (EMB) said it would select a supplier for dual head-up displays (HUD)s later this year.
March 2013: Honeywell (SGC)’s IntuVue 3-D Weather Radar Hazard Display Update V1.0 has been selected by Pegasus Airlines (PGS). (PGS)’ selection of the upgrade brings new features, including hail and lightning prediction and the industry’s longest turbulence detection range, to Europe for the first time following the system’s (EASA) certification.
(SGC) predicts (PGS) will also be able to reduce unscheduled maintenance costs and airplane grounding through IntuVue’s new features that simplify decision-making about re-routing and tactical manoeuvring around inclement weather. (SGC) will install the software upgrade across (PGS)’s 42-strong, IntuVue-equipped 737 fleet over the next eight months.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has selected Honeywell (SGC)’s SmartPath ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) as part of a pilot project to launch satellite-based approaches and landings at Chennai International Airport. The pilot project is part of the USA-India Aviation Cooperation Program, partially funded by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). Passenger demand at Chennai is expected to grow to 540 million annually over the next 12 years, and (AAI) is looking to use the SmartPath system to meet the future demand.
SmartPath will enable Chennai to support up to 26 separate approaches across four runways simultaneously, compared to traditional Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) that usually support one approach at one end of a single runway, the company said. “Chennai International is India’s third busiest airport, handling over >10.5 million passengers each year, and with this number continuing to rise, we believe investment in innovations such as SmartPath holds the key to cost-effectively meeting future demand,” said VP Agrawal, Chairman of (AAI).
(SGC) extended a strategic partnership with China Eastern Airlines (CEA) to provide avionics (weather radar, traffic alert and collision avoidance systems, enhanced ground proximity warning system) for 58 new 737NGs as well as wheels and brakes for 15 new A330s. Under the terms, (SGC) will also provide a suite of aftermarket repair and maintenance programs for the braking systems.
July 2013: Honeywell (SGC) has joined the investigation into the Ethiopian Airlines (ETH) 787 fire at London Heathrow Airport as the focus shifts to components including the emergency locator transmitter (ELT). “We can confirm that (SGC) has been invited to join the investigation. The (ELT) is one of several components being looked at in detail as part of the investigation and it would be premature to speculate on the causes of the incident at this stage,” a UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) spokesman said.
The (ELT) is available on the majority of commercial airplanes and is located toward the rear of the 787. It is powered by non-rechargeable lithium manganese dioxide batteries, which are also found in a range of personal electronic devices such as digital cameras. Lithium manganese dioxide batteries are not the same as the lithium ion batteries, which were behind the three-month 787 grounding that ended in April. In 2012, the (FAA) issued a warning about lithium metal (non-rechargeable) and lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries being carried as cargo following the September 3, 2010 crash of a (UPS) 747-400F freighter in Dubai.
“Honeywell (SGC) has been participating in the (ETH)’s 787 fire investigation. It’s far too premature to speculate on the cause, or draw conclusions. Our (ELT) products have been certified by the (FAA) since 2005, are used on a number of airplane models, and we’ve not seen nor experienced a single reported issue on this product-line,” Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) Director Global Media & Analyst Relations, Steve Brecken said.
The (AAIB) is likely to evaluate a range of sub-systems and wiring as part of its ongoing investigation into the fire.
The (AAIB) has recommended that the Honeywell (SGC) emergency locator transmitter (ELT) on all in-service 787s be temporarily made “inert” following a fire on board an Ethiopian Airlines (ETH) 787-8 at London Heathrow Airport.
In a special bulletin, the (AAIB) said the fire damage suffered by the (ETH) 787 coincided with the location of the (ELT) and its related wiring. “There are no other airplane systems in this vicinity which, with the airplane unpowered, contain stored energy capable of initiating a fire in the area of heat damage,” the bulletin stated. The (AAIB) said it had found “indications of disruption” to the (ELT)’s lithium-manganese dioxide batteries, although it was unclear whether the combustion was triggered by the batteries themselves or by an external cause, such as an electrical short circuit. “Detailed examination of the (ELT) and the possible mechanisms for the initiation and sustaining of the fire in this airplane continues.”
Over 6,000 (ELT)s of this design have been fitted to a wide range of airplanes and the (AAIB) said this was the “only significant thermal event” to date, making it “extremely rare.” However, the (AAIB) cautioned that a similar event in-flight could pose “a significant safety concern” given that the space above the cabin ceiling is not typically equipped with fire detection or suppression equipment.
“It is recommended that the [FAA] initiate action for making inert the Honeywell International (SGC) RESCU406AFN fixed emergency locator transmitter system in 787s until appropriate airworthiness actions can be completed,” the (AAIB) bulletin said. It also recommended that the (FAA) and other regulatory authorities perform a safety review of lithium-powered (ELT) installations on other airplane types and take airworthiness action where needed.
Boeing (TBC) issued a statement saying it supported the two recommendations, which it described as “reasonable precautionary measures” during the ongoing investigation. “We are confident the 787 is safe and we stand behind its overall integrity,” (TBC) said.
The (ETH) 787 suffered “extensive heat damage” to its upper rear fuselage from the July 12 incident, including “significant” damage to its insulation and composite structure. Smoke from the parked, unoccupied airplane was spotted by the air traffic control (ATC) tower. Fire crews on the scene “encountered thick smoke” in the cabin and saw “indications of fire” above the ceiling panels. The panels were removed and the fire was extinguished.
August 2013: Second quarter aerospace segment sales and profit followed first quarter trends at Honeywell (SGC), which finished the six months ending June with revenue down -2% at $5.91 billion, but profit up +4% at +$1.13 billion. Defense and space sector sales were lower, but largely offset by commercial growth, particularly in original equipment, buoyed by strong build rates and a favorable platform mix. In the second quarter, commercial aftermarket sales rose +3%.
Honeywell (SGC) received orders for a total of 126 of its avionics suites from Russian airlines Aeroflot (ARO) and UTair (TYU), and airplane leasing firm Aviation Capital Services (ACS) (CGP). The orders were received at the International International Aviation & Space Salon, known as the (MAKS) 2013 Air Show, held at Moscow’s Zhukovsky Airport. The orders call for 16 for (ARO)'s 777 fleet, 50 for (ACS)'(CGP) new Next-Generation 737s, 40 for (TYU)'s 737NGs and 20 for the new fleet.
September 2013: As a follow-up to the July 12 fire in a parked and unoccupied Ethiopian Airlines (ETH) 787-8 at London Heathrow Airport, the (FAA) issued a final rule and airworthiness directive (AD) for USA airlines to inspect 3,832 Honeywell (SGC) emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) installed on USA airplanes.
The (AD), which becomes effective October 3, “requires various one-time general visual inspections of the (ELT) transmitter units (TU)s, and corrective actions if necessary,” according to the (FAA) (AD).
USA air carriers have 120 days to comply with the order, which the (FAA) acknowledges is “unusually long for an immediately adopted rule.” Based on the large number of affected (ELT)s, the (FAA) is granting an extra compliance window “to avoid unnecessarily disrupting flight schedules.”
An earlier (FAA) (AD) from July 26 had ordered the inspection of (ELT)s specifically for 787-8 Dreamliners.
The order comes in the wake of the August 15 (AD) by Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) for Canadian airlines to inspect their airplane’s (ELT)s. The Canadian (AD) was issued as “a precautionary measure to address the possibility of a fire due to wiring installation discrepancies of either the (ELT) (TU) or the (ELT) Battery.”
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued its own mandate for inspection of the Honeywell (ELT)s on all affected European airplanes on August 21.
Following the initial blaze, the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), looked into the cause of the incident and, according to the (TCCA), released preliminary findings indicating “there was combustion in the area of the (ELT) (TU). Subsequent to the fire event, inspection of in-service (ELT) (TU)s revealed battery wiring installation discrepancies inside the (TU) that may result in an electrical short. The (AAIB) noted that in case of an electrical short, the (ELT) battery could provide the energy for an ignition.”
The (FAA) estimates the inspection of each (ELT) will take one hour, at an estimated expense of $85 an hour, costing USA operators $325,720 total (not including the cost of potential repairs and/or removal of a malfunctioning (TU)).
Manufacturers affected by and specifically mentioned in the (FAA) (AD) include Boeing (TBC), Lockheed Martin, Airbus (EDS), (ATR) and Dassault Aviation.
The (FAA) is proposing a new airworthiness directive (AD) for the replacement of certain older Honeywell (SGC) cockpit displays on 737 and 777 family airplanes due to their vulnerability to Wi-Fi interference. The (FAA) said the Honeywell (SGC) phase 3 display units (DU) are susceptible to radio frequency emissions in Wi-Fi frequency bands at "radiated power levels below the level that the displays are required to tolerate for certification of Wi-Fi system installations."
During testing of the phase 3 (DU)s on 737 series airplanes, the displays went blank for as long as 6 minutes when subjected to Wi-Fi frequencies. If the systems were to go blank during takeoffs and landings, it could result in the flight crew (FC)'s loss of control of the airplane at altitudes insufficient for recovery, the (FAA) said. The displays provide flight critical information such as airspeed, altitude and heading.
The proposal was filed during the same week that an (FAA) advisory panel is meeting to complete recommendations on expanding the in-flight use of personal electronic devices (PED) by passengers connecting to the Internet through onboard Wi-Fi systems. The (FAA) is recommending affected operators replace the existing phase 3 (DU)s with new phase 3A (DU)s and installation of new (DU) database software.
According to the (FAA), the (AD) affects 157 airplanes, with a total cost of retrofitting the planes with new displays at $1.6 million, or about $20,000 per plane.
October 2013: Sales of aerospace products declined by -2% to $2.97 million in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the same period a year ago, Honeywell (SGC) said in its quarterly earnings report. The aerospace and defense manufacturer attributed the decline to a drop in sales of its defense and space products, the result of declining national defense budgets, most notable in the USA with the continued across-the-board government spending cuts known as sequestration. However, the drop in its defense segment was "partially offset" by growth on the commercial side, as sales to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) such as Boeing (TBC), were up +3%.
Additionally, sales of its commercial aftermarket avionics and other aerospace products increased by +3%, driven by "improved flight hour growth" and operators looking to support repairs, modifications and upgrades of their airplanes. "Looking ahead to 2014, we are planning for a continued slow growth macro environment, but see a path to strong earnings growth driven by our relentless seed planting in new products and technologies, continued penetration of high growth regions, and growing traction on key process initiatives," said Dave Cote, Chairman & (CEO) at Honeywell (SGC).
Montreal-based, aircraft maintenance group (AJW) has signed an Authorized Service Center and Purchase Parts five-year agreement with Honeywell International (SGC). The agreement gives (AJW) direct access to Honeywell (SGC) technical data and spare parts, along with technical assistance and training provided by Honeywell (SGC) for the duration of the agreement. "This new partnership with Honeywell (SGC) is the most recent example of (AJW) Technique’s rapid success at gaining strategic and tactical support from the world’s leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)s,” said Gavin Simmonds, General Manager of (AJW) Technique.
November 2013: Honeywell (SGC) is under an ongoing contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to study the usability of various forms of touch technology, such as cockpit displays, that will help to determine what factors would cause pilots (FC) to make more input errors or take longer to perform tasks as compared to traditional manually controlled cockpit interfaces.
(SGC) is targeting business aviation and regional air transport airplanes for a new line of touchscreen avionics that it is currently developing, with the (FAA)-contracted research.
(SGC) has not announced any specific airplane that will receive touchscreen-enabled flight displays, but according to Jeff Merdich Director Product Marketing for (SGC)'s Commercial Avionics division, business jets and regional airplanes are the target market.
As part of its research, (SGC) recreates the turbulent flight deck environment where touchscreen avionics will be deployed with a "6 degrees of freedom flight deck simulation platform," according to Merdich. This allows test pilots (FC) to interact with touchscreen-enabled avionics displays mounted at forward, outboard and overhead cockpit positions.
"This allows the collection of accurate, repeatable data relating to pilot (FC) workload, accuracy and fatigue to ensure that we understand the efficiency of these devices in a flight deck environment," said Merdich. "We also utilize Honeywell (SGC)’s fleet of flight test airplanes to extend this research to the actual flight environment."
Central to (SGC)'s research are human factors engineering principles, which involve studying the interaction of the pilot (FC)'s mind with proposed avionics systems, rather than focusing on the avionics alone. "We have a heavy focus on human factors, including the appropriate intended function and functional allocation for touch technology on the flight deck," said Merdich. "Our research, has shown that there are key attributes (technology, location, button size, spacing, menu navigation, etc) to the implementation of touch that are instrumental toward insuring a satisfying user experience with touch in this unique environment."
Focusing on human factors should help to relieve fears expressed by operators and pilots (FC) in reaction to previous reports on touchscreen technology regarding inadvertent touchscreen swipes. To address inadvertent touchscreen interactions, (SGC)'s researchers and engineers (MT) are evaluating the usability of differing touch technologies, such as digital resistive technology, which requires more pressure to change the function of the interface than would a typical swipe on a touchscreen smartphone or tablet.
So how long until the industry sees the widespread deployment of cockpit touchscreen technology? That depends on the intended function and usability for intended function, according to Merdich.
"With the continued growth of touch in the commercial technology space, we do see a transition to this technology over time," said Merdich. "Intended function and usability for intended function will be a key driver behind adoption of this or other interface modalities."
In July 2014, (SGC) will present the results of its touchscreen research to the (FAA) for it to take into consideration for regulatory guidelines, and the conclusions will also help to guide their future product designs.
February 2014: Honeywell (SGC) and Inmarsat announced they have finalized the critical design review of (GX) Aviation, a key milestone in the journey to bring high-speed inflight Wi-Fi to flights around the world.
According to a joint announcement, the 2 companies anticipate that product certifications will be achieved later this year, followed by product introduction, which is expected during the 1st half of 2015.
(GX) Aviation will provide data rates to passenger and business airplanes of up to 50 Mbps, giving passengers the ability “to do everything from real-time social media updates and emails to live-streaming TV, all while in flight, and from virtually anywhere in the world, over both land and sea,” the companies said.
Completing the Critical Design Review (CDR) marks the final development review for the (GX) Aviation airplane avionics program. Inmarsat and (SGC) engineers completed the evaluation on schedule and executed a comprehensive audit of the system design, engineering model hardware and program.
Completion of this major milestone follows the successful launch of Inmarsat-5 F1—the first of 3 Ka-band satellites—from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Russia December 8, 2013. The 2nd and 3rd satellites are scheduled to launch later this year, providing full global coverage by the end of 2014.
March 2014: The U.K. Department for International Development will deploy Honeywell (SGC)'s SmartPath Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) at St Helena's airport, scheduled to open in 2016.
SmartPath is the only (FAA)-certified (GBAS) system, which augments airplane Ground Proximity System (GPS) signals to make them suitable for approach and landing. “By installing (SGC)’s SmartPath (GBAS) at St Helena’s airport, we are taking the opportunity to use one of the industry’s most advanced technologies to help beat the challenge of delays and improve landing assurance,” said Janet Lawrence, Director of St Helena’s Airport Project.
“SmartPath will deliver a better passenger experience, improve flight operations, lower noise at ground level and ultimately help to transform everyday access to St Helena,” said Lawrence.
A second initial 4D (i4D) trajectory flight trial has been conducted as part of a joint project by members of the European Union (EU) (funded Single European Sky (ATM) Research (SESAR) Joint Undertaking (SJU). The first flight trial was in 2012. This second flight trial was conducted using Airbus (EDS)’ A320 flight-test airplane, (MSN001), with a Honeywell (SGC) Flight Management System (FMS) on the outbound leg from Toulouse via Copenhagen to Stockholm, and a Thales (THL) (FMS) on the return journey.
Its goal was to demonstrate the technical and operational benefits of i4D in a live traffic environment, following the initial feasibility trial conducted in February 2012. Using the same airplane on the same test route, the 2012 trial was the world’s first flight using four-dimensional optimized and upgraded air traffic management (ATM) technology. The core objective of i4D is to ensure that airplane flight trajectories remain synchronized between air and ground throughout all aspects of flight to optimize the airplane trajectory in three dimensions plus time. This should result in safer and more efficient handling, and certainty of flight profiles. Airbus (EDS) said the flight trial “confirmed that i4D offers safety and environmental gains, with reductions in fuel costs, increased flight predictability and overall network efficiency.”
Controllers can clearly see on their screens expected ground and airborne trajectories, which allow them to resolve discrepancies and anticipate flight paths with greater precision. Similarly, airplanes can better manage their speed profile, resulting in fuel savings and an environmentally optimized flight profile. The sharing of trajectory also means that airplane sequences can be more efficiently managed and delivered into Terminal Manoeuvering Areas (TMA)s.
The (SJU) said the flight “proves that the [i4D] technology, systems and procedures are ready for large-scale demonstrations and therefore one step closer to deployment.” If the validation process is a success, i4D should be implemented by the entire European aviation industry around 2018.
(SJU) members involved in the trial were Thales (THL), (NORACON) (a consortium of 8 European (ANSP)s:- Austro Control (Austria), Avinor (Norway), (EANS) (Estonia), Finavia (Finland), (IAA) (Ireland), (ISAVIA) (Iceland), (LFV) (Sweden) and Naviair (Denmark), the Maastricht Upper Area Control Center (MUAC), Indra, Eurocontrol, Honeywell (SGC), and Airbus (EDS). 1 of Airbus (EDS)’ key roles has been to test the upgraded (FMS) and communication systems with each other and to integrate them into the real airplane architecture.
April 2014: Honeywell (SGC) and Safran have signed a Memo of Understanding (MOU) with GoAir (GOZ) to support advancement of the (EGTS) electric taxiing system, a technology that can save airlines up to 4% block fuel consumption per flight.
May 2014: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the Philippines has signed a formal agreement with Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and Hughes Aerospace Corporation to develop performance-based navigation procedures for Daniel Z Romualdez Airport in Tacloban, that will enable safer, more reliable and consistent operations under all weather conditions.
The new navigation procedures will be used to improve aid, relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts for the Leyte region, Tacloban and the surrounding areas, following the catastrophic effects of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. (SGC) and Hughes will absorb the entire cost of the development of these approaches at the airport to ensure that the flow of relief supplies is not impacted. “The effects of Typhoon Haiyan were catastrophic for the people of Leyte and the Tacloban regions. Additionally, when the airport’s sole navigational aid was lost, it made safe and efficient recovery efforts even more difficult. (SGC) is pleased to share its expertise in safety technology to support the rebuilding efforts,” said Brian Davis VP Airlines, Asia Pacific (SGC). “We will continue to provide our support to the government through this difficult period to ensure the necessary navigational systems are in place to help with recovery and relief efforts.”
The new performance-based navigation (PBN) approaches will allow Daniel Z Romualdez Airport to move away from legacy ground-based navigation aids to satellite-based technologies using area navigation procedures. This will enable a lowering of the approach minimums that were in place before the disaster.
This shift in systems will allow airplanes carrying relief supplies to the Leyte region, to fly a more stable and accurate flight path, allowing shorter and more direct routes as well as more efficient takeoffs and landings. “The situation at Daniel Z Romualdez Airport was severe as Typhoon Haiyan had completely destroyed the ground-based navigational aid. As a result, the only Instrument Flight Procedure serving Tacloban was lost, limiting the airport to daytime operations in fair weather, which could potentially limit recovery and relief efforts,” said Chris Baur, President & (CEO), Hughes Aerospace. “Honeywell (SGC) and Hughes are partners in the global (PBN) movement, and working together, we identified an opportunity to assist the Philippines, providing a reliable, all-weather solution that is safer and has greater capability than the (VHF) omnidirectional range (VOR) Instrument Flight Procedure it replaces,” said Chris Baur. “Our successful partnership with the Philippines government and airlines will play a major role in helping to rebuild the Leyte region.”
Performance-based navigation (PBN) is a general term that defines navigation performance requirements for an air traffic route, instrument procedure or defined portion of airspace. This strategy will address current limitations on air transportation capacity by making more efficient use of the airspace. The strategy bases its foundation on two key navigation concepts: Area Navigation and Required Navigation Performance.
Key advantages of (PBN) approach include better access to terrain-challenged airports; parallel runway, converging and adjacent airport operations; lower Minima resulting in fewer weather-related delays and diversions; reduced flight time due to optimized routing; and more reliable, repeatable flight paths.
According to "World Disasters Report in 2013," Asia remains the continent most frequently affected, with 40.6% of all natural and or technological disasters between 2003 and 2013. Africa comes second with 24.4% of all disasters. It is therefore exceptionally important for a country’s infrastructure ranging from airports, trains and ports to roads, bridges and telecommunications networks to function even in times of emergency.
(SGC) is moving ahead with development of its Electric Green Taxiing System (EGTS) for narrow body airplanes and is talking to (COMAC) (CCC) about potentially making the system an option on the C919.
Briefing journalists at (SGC)’s Deer Park Valley, Arizona, facility, VP Product Marketing & (EGTS) Business Manager Jim Fusaro said they were in talks with “north of 30” airlines that are interested in the system. (EGTS) is being developed by (EGTS) International, a 50:50 joint venture (JV) between (SGC) and Safran. The tug is fitted to the airplane’s main landing gear and powered by the auxiliary power unit (APU) so that the airplane can be remotely taxied around airports, providing significant savings in fuel, emissions and labor costs.
Airbus (EDS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with (EGTS) International to develop the system for A320 family airplanes that will be provided as a customer option, initially for new airplanes but later as a retrofit.
Fusaro said (SGC) was also in talks with (COMAC), manufacturer of the C919 that is under development in China. (SGC) is making the (APU) for the C919 and Fusaro said it would be capable at powering the (EGTS). “We are talking to (COMAC) (CCC), but they have not decided. We have plans to deploy with the C919 when they are ready,” he said.
Fusaro said an (EGTS) technology demonstrator has been shown to a group of pilots (FC) from some 30 airlines and it has been tested in ice and wet conditions. The system is designed to travel at around 14 knots, eventually going to 19 knots. Some 210 miles and 3,000 hours of rolling tests have been completed as the company aims for a 2017 entry-into-service (EIS) date. (MOU)s have been signed with GoAir (GOZ) and Interjet (AAE).
Unlike the taxing system in development by WheelTug, which uses electric motors in the nosewheels, the Honeywell (SGC) - Safran system has motors in the wheels of the main landing gear. Fusaro said the decision to to power the main rather than nosewheels was based on a number of factors, including the fact that the majority of the airplane's weight is transmitted through the main gear. This should make (EGTS) better equipped to handle adverse surface conditions and provide better aerodynamics.

Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and Thales (THL) will collaborate to integrate Honeywell JetWave hardware with Thales cabin network solutions for Airbus A350 XWB and other commercial airplanes. The combined offering will give commercial airline operators and their passengers the same in-flight connectivity experience as they would have at home or work (enabling real-time TV channel viewing, live chatting, video streaming and more).
November 2014: News Item A-1: Over the next 2 decades, China will become the world's largest air passenger market, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who projects the country will surpass the USA by adding +16.9 billion new passengers. To accommodate for that massive growth in the number of airplanes flying into and out of China, the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) has implemented avionics equipage requirements for its domestic airlines, presenting big opportunities for well-established American and European avionics manufacturers. Airshow China in Zhuhai this month presented the opportunity for 1 of the industry's most active players in the region, Thales (THL), to discuss equipage requirements with airlines and also enter into new business opportunities with operators in the region.
In 2012, the (CAAC) published its "Head up Display Application Roadmap," requiring airlines to equip 10% of their fleet with Head up Displays (HUDs) by 2015, then increasing that to 50% by 2020 and finally equipping 100% of the fleet with the technology by 2025. Thales (THL) is the sole supplier of (HUD)s for the entire Airbus (EDS) airplane family, from the A318 to the company's latest model, the A350 XWB. The (CAAC) is making (HUD) technology a priority for its airlines, in order to improve safety and efficiency, Daniel Malka VP Avionics Services at (THL) told Avionics Magazine.
"In China, you have more and more airplanes flying. They have a lot of difficulties managing the increasing number of flights into China. The airlines that have the (HUD)s installed, they will benefit from improved situational awareness and safety," Malka said. "Beijing for example has one of the world's most congested airports, causing very significant delays. I can remember one time having to wait four hours on the airplane for our flight to leave, and these delays are caused by the significant growth in the number of flights they've experienced recently. The (CAAC) is very concerned with improving that, so they started to ask for this (HUD), because one of the ways that you can safely get more airplanes into the airspace is by improving pilot (FC) perception and situational awareness with that technology."
According to an emailed statement from Thales, the company believes the (HUD) system allows smoother transitions for pilots (FC) between "eyes in" and "eyes out" flight operations. The technology also has the possibility of allowing for reduced landing minima on suitably equipped runways in China. Over the next 5 years, the (CAAC) has authorized the construction of 70 new airports in China to help accommodate for projected air traffic growth.
(Thales) (THL) will not be the only avionics company benefiting from (CAAC)'s (HUD) requirement either. Rockwell Collins is the supplier of (HUD)s for the Boeing 737, 777 and 787, thus, the Chinese carriers adding Boeing air transport airplanes to their fleets over the next decade will receive 1 of their displays. Through 2025, (IATA) expects 1 3rd of all new production aircraft from the major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)s to be delivered to Chinese operators. Malka also said that the (CAAC) will be requiring airlines to equip their airplanes with satellite communication systems to assist with communication between pilots (FC) and flight dispatchers.
"There is a request from the (CAAC) to install satcom on their airplanes and as more airplanes continue to be added by the airlines there, more will have to be equipped with both forward fit and retrofit installations in the future," said Malka. "There are also 3 stages in this recommendation from the (CAAC), which is in fact, in 2013, 20% of the fleet equipped with satcom. We will see between now and next year that they have to reach 70%, and the 3rd stage, which is 2016, they have to reach 100% equipped with satcom."
One of (THL)'s major competitors, (SGC), is also seeing opportunities for growth in China as the country's civil aviation industry continues to develop and become managed, as it is in Europe and North America. Currently (SGC) employs about 400 aerospace engineers in its research and product centers in China, with that number expected to increase to >700 by 2017. In the past, (SGC) engineers served mostly in a support role to Chinese carriers, but that focus has been shifting to a leadership role in domestic production and engineering development, said Thea Feyereisen, an engineering fellow in the Flight Safety Systems group of (SGC)'s Aerospace Advanced Technology organization.
"Before, most of our in country engineers were more of a product support, and now they're becoming more involved in actual development of technology, and so they'll support our traditional product lines, though they also are creating new market space and new products specifically developed for the region," said Feyereisen.
One of the current projects Feyereisen is working on involves helicopter pilots (FC). (SGC) engineers in China are currently working on a system that produces voice activated safety alerts in Mandarin for Chinese helicopter operators.
(THL) is also showing interest in the Chinese helicopter industry, especially with the (CAAC)'s decision to relax its rules around low-level flying, leading to increased rotorcraft flight operations. During "Airshow China," (THL) announced a new partnership with Shanghai Avionics Corporation (SAVIC), to begin jointly developing avionics solutions for the country's growing helicopter market.
"Two-thirds of all new airports currently under construction in the world are in China. With the tremendous market needs and burgeoning demand, the rising presence and emphasis of China in aerospace appears as a forgone conclusion," Feyereisen said in a recent blog post. "China has the 2nd largest economy in the world and the Chinese aerospace industry is just beginning to takeoff."

December 2014: News Item A-1: Honeywell (SGC) has partnered with the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO) to design, develop and build a new high-technology laboratory in Puerto Rico to test Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). As airplanes become more and more entrenched in connectivity, it also becomes necessary to know exactly how electromagnetic forces, such as those from Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs), will interfere with aviation. (SGC)’s new facility aims to scrub up some of the uncertainty surrounding electronics and provide a clear picture of how and when (EMI) is an issue for both operators and regulators.
“In the aerospace industry, (EMI) refers to electromagnetic forces that disrupt the function of airplane equipment. To counteract (EMI) from uncertain atmospheric conditions, the increasing use of (PED)s, and a growing amount of complex equipment aboard airplanes, the (FAA) and the aviation industry continue to research (EMI) and test the Electromagnetic Capability (EMC) of equipment,” Bob Smith VP Engineering & Chief Technology Officer at (SGC), said in an interview with "Avionics Magazine. This research will ensure the safety, security and performance of aviation solutions.”
Specifically, the 73,000-square-foot laboratory will be testing electromagnetic compatibility with products (SGC) designs for navigation, electromechanical and cockpit systems. (SGC) hopes to add an extra layer of verification as to the safety of these products, ensuring reliability. While this is beneficial in the way of their own products, researchers hope to help regulators better understand (EMI) as well.
“We plan to influence specific guidelines that address the issue of (EMI) in the aerospace industry, once the high-technology laboratory is in place,” Smith said. “It will be critical to ensure testing parameters are clearly identified to help regulators understand the types of (EMI) testing performed, test results and descriptions of how (EMI) interactions were handled.”
The need to connect shows no signs of slowing down, as a 2014 Honeywell (SGC) survey on In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) reports that 66% of passengers say their flight selection is influenced by a Wi-Fi offering. As technologies take to the skies and evolve to deliver faster, more reliable and more secure Internet connections in-flight (particularly on smartphones, laptops and tablets) the need to understand the impact becomes imperative.
“The expectation of continuous connectivity is a reality for today’s travelers,” said Smith. “As a result, (SGC) continues to invest in developing solutions that directly address safety and security issues.”
Alongside (PRIDCO), (SGC) has been collaborating with local universities in Puerto Rico to recruit new and effective talent to the facility when construction is complete in October 2015. These jobs offer another advantage to the facility, as much to the aerospace supplier as to the region itself.
“We chose Puerto Rico for this project based on several considerations including its compliance with all federal regulations for defense activities, economic incentives, and the opportunity to collaborate with local universities to develop new talent,” Smith said. “The project represents an important milestone for the growing Puerto Rico aerospace industry and the local economy overall. This facility will help create job opportunities for dozens and stimulate economic activity for several local contractors and suppliers.”
This is the 2nd aerospace facility that (SGC) will build in the region and Smith confirms that it will consider more opportunities should they align with (SGC) incentives. In the meantime, the company will focus on breaking ground with new (EMI) research. “The (EMI) laboratory will help advance all sectors of the aerospace industry (from business to commercial and military),” said Smith.
News Item A-2: Global mobile satellite communications services provider Inmarsat has confirmed that its second Global Xpress (GX) satellite (Inmarsat-5 F2) has arrived at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, in anticipation of its launch early in 2015.
Inmarsat-5 F2 is the 2nd of 3 satellites that will form Inmarsat’s GX fleet, providing seamless, globally available, high-speed broadband services on land, sea and in the air. When in orbit, Inmarsat-5 F2 will cover the Americas and the Atlantic Ocean region.
The 1st GX satellite, Inmarsat-5 F1, was launched at the end of 2013 and began delivering regional commercial services over Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia in July 2014.
The 3rd GX satellite, Inmarsat-5 F3, has completed its final testing and is now ready for shipping to Kazakhstan in early 2015. F3 will complete the Global Xpress constellation by providing coverage over the Pacific Ocean Region.
(GX) is scheduled to commence global commercial services early in the 2nd half of 2015.
“The arrival of Inmarsat-5 F2 to the launch site in Baikonur demonstrates that we will be able to offer our high-speed Ka-band service, GX Aviation, early in the 2nd half of 2015,” Inmarsat Aviation President, Leo Mondale said. “The ground networks are in place and Honeywell (SGC) will start transmission testing of the airborne satellite communications equipment imminently (we’re right on track to deliver this world-leading global network to our partners and airlines”).

March 2015: News Item A-1: Honeywell (SGC) and Inmarsat’s JetWave MCS 8200 completed over-the-air testing of the onboard datacom system earlier this month, possibly bringing them one step closer to delivering the global broadband to aviation that companies are striving toward and passengers are hungry for. The new system will deliver satellite-based In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) via the satellite operator’s Global Xpress network, and claims it can enable speeds at 40,000 feet similar to those we’re used to on the ground.
“The system will provide up to 33 Mpbs to the business and general aviation airplanes and up to 49 Mpbs for the air transport and regional airplanes,” Joseph Palovick, Director of Broadband Cabin Solutions & Product Management at Honeywell Aerospace (SGC), told "Avionics Magazine." This should, Palovolick claims, allow business and commercial passengers to use the Internet in ways customers have come to expect but haven’t yet seen. “Passengers will be able to do everything from real-time social media updates and emails, to live-streaming TV while in flight, and from virtually anywhere in the world with an experience similar to being at home or in the office,” he added.
The new system is the result of a 2012 agreement between the two companies and airplane manufacturers and airlines are already showing confidence in the system. Bombardier (BMB) Business Aircraft announced its decision in September to be the launch Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) with plans to equip aboard the Global 5000 through 8000 airplane platforms alongside a retrofit option for airplanes already in service.
“Our customers want to be online everywhere they go,” said Eric Martel, President of Bombardier Business Aircraft at the time of the announcement, noting that passengers expect to “experience the same level of connectivity in the air that they have come to expect on the ground without a drop in connectivity performance once they leave their homes or offices.”
The companies’ hope to deliver this kind of connectivity in the Ka-band network that Inmarsat’s satellite constellation is currently providing over the Indian Ocean, Americas and Atlantic Ocean. With the launch of the next satellite in the second quarter of this year, the band will come available over the Atlantic Ocean and deliver complete coverage. After the last satellite is launched, Palovick believes the Ka coverage it provides will offer a much higher speed than the Ku-band offerings that are on the market today.
“It will offer coverage on international flights where Ku coverage is not available and offer significant coverage advantages over other Ka-based solutions,” said Palovick. “It is the answer to limited bandwidth on flights, by providing the same high-speed connection in mid-air that you would get on the ground.”
While Honeywell (SGC) and Inmarsat’s Ka-based JetWave hardware will offer coverage advantages, the industry still has shown a healthy demand for Ku-based solutions as well. For example, Global Eagle Entertainment (GEE) recently announced a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its Ku-band satellite connectivity system on the Boeing 777. (GEE) has also made its Ku-band system available on new Boeing 737s, giving airlines ordering 737s the option of including pre-installed satellite connectivity.
Palovick admits that the system is still susceptible to a certain amount of atmospheric or rain fade, however, but that there is some margin built into the link budget to account for it.
The system uses Honeywell (SGC)’s onboard equipment to enable connectivity in two configurations: one for large air transport-grade airplanes in which it uses a steerable directional antenna system mounted on the fuselage, and the other for corporate business airplanes in which the antenna is mounted on the tail. The antenna is then combined with a number of components within the airplane skin that function together to provide the connectivity system.
The hardware is currently in full certification testing and entering into DO-160 environmental and electromagnetic interference certifications, after which the companies will now look to prove the system on flight tests in the second quarter of 2015. If all goes as planned, the system should be available to connect to Inmarsat’s Global Xpress constellation network later this year for the cabin and eventually, for the cockpit should regulation allow.

Using Honeywell Aerospace (SGC)'s SmartPath precision landing system at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and Air Traffic Management Bureau completed its first flight demonstration of next generation (GPS)-based precision landing capabilities. This demonstration highlighted how (GPS)-based precision landing systems, called Ground-Based Augmentation Systems (GBAS), can improve the safety and efficiency of airplane operations, especially throughout poor-weather conditions. Precision landings utilize both lateral and vertical information of an airplane's position to provide the most accurate approach and landing.
SmartPath is the world's only (FAA)-certified precision landing system. This cost effective system will increase airport capacity, decrease air traffic noise, reduce weather-related delays, and reduce operating costs for both airplane operators and air navigation service providers for one of the busiest airports in the world.
"China's air traffic has grown exponentially over the years, driven by domestic and international travel," said Brian Davis, VP Airlines, Asia Pacific at Honeywell Aerospace (SGC). "The adoption of (SGC)'s SmartPath at Shanghai Pudong International Airport marks a milestone for the modernization of air traffic management (ATM) in China, where this new technology can ease airplane delays, reduces emissions and improves airport efficiencies in one of the fastest growing economies in the world."
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), China will have 415 million fliers annually by 2016, second only to the USA in domestic passenger volume. The upsurge in passengers makes modernization of air traffic management (ATM) a critical issue for China's major hubs.
As a response to growing passenger demand, SmartPath is an important investment to meet demand, drive productivity and ensure airports are better equipped to service airlines and passengers. Combined with performance-based navigation procedures, a twin-engine, single-aisle jet airplane can save per flight approximately 82 kg of fuel and 104 kg of carbon emissions with a reduction of -4 minutes of flying time. This potential for efficiency improvement addresses China's "battle of conserving energy, reducing emissions and improving the environment," which was raised as a national concern by Premier Li Keqiang.
(SGC)'s SmartPath is the only (GBAS) to have achieved operational certifications from regulatory authorities in the USA, Australia, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland. SmartPath overcomes many of the technological limitations of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), which are the legacy systems used to support precision landings. By utilizing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), SmartPath provides a highly accurate position based on digital data, which enables airplanes to fly flexible approach paths that support more efficient terminal operations, while also avoiding common interference issues that are inherent with the analog (ILS) technology. News Item A-2: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and OneWeb Ltd have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) under which (SGC) will provide airplane equipment and airtime services to bring the benefits of OneWeb's planned satellite constellation to business, commercial and military airplanes. OneWeb is building a constellation of >600 satellites, which will provide approximately 10 terabits per second of high-speed Internet access to billions of people around the world, even in the most remote areas.
When launched, OneWeb's constellation will be the largest telecommunications constellation in orbit, enabling more capacity with higher speed and lower latency than any satellite technology to date. The OneWeb satellite constellation is expected to be operational in approximately 4 years.
Under the agreement, Honeywell (SGC) will provide business jet, commercial airline and military aviation customers with airplane hardware and airtime services that could include weather, navigation and health monitoring of the airplanes via the OneWeb satellite constellation. In addition, (SGC) will work with OneWeb to explore in-orbit satellite equipment supply for the 600-plus satellite constellation.

May 2015: News Item A-1: Southwest Airlines (SWA) selected Honeywell (SGC) to supply avionics package to meet future government-mandated regulations for its Boeing 737 MAXs (currently 200) on order and existing 737NG fleet. Most of this fleet will include a collision avoidance system that can be coupled with an automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) In receiver.
The 737NGs and its incoming 737 Max will get the SmartTraffic collision avoidance system. Although the system has the ability to interface with the (ADS-B) In data, Honeywell (SGC) said that the deal does not include installation of those receivers.
(SWA)'s fleet includes 436 737-700S AND 93 737-800s, and it has orders for 170 737 Max 8s and 30 737 Max 7s. (SWA) also has 118 older 737-800s and 12 737-500s, although (SWA) did not say whether those types will receive the upgrades.
The airplanes will also have installed (SGC)'s Multi-Mode Receiver, which can process data from a range of navigation systems, as well as its Aspire satellite communications system, which provides voice and data communications via satellite networks.
Other equipment included in the deal includes (SGC)'s IntuVue RDR-4000 3-D weather radar, which can help predict turbulence at distances up to 60 nm and its Quantum Line communications and navigation radios, (SGC) added.
News Item A-2: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) has released the new CNX-250 multifunction router, enabling airplanes to connect to a cellular network while on the ground and transition to a satellite connection while in flight. The new router enables connectivity to a variety of network sources rather than exclusively to a satellite communications network, giving operators and maintenance personnel the flexibility to always stay connected.
“In addition to consistent in-flight Wi-Fi, the new CNX-250 router means an airplane doesn’t have to taxi outside the hangar for connectivity when Wi-Fi is required for ground maintenance operations,” said Rebecca Sidelinger, Senior Director Marketing & Product Management at Honeywell Aerospace.

July 2015: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) has signed a contract with SunExpress (SNS) to supply cockpit technologies for its 1st delivery of newly purchased 737-800 airplanes. (SGC) will provide (SNS) with cockpit avionics, including the IntuVue 3-D Weather Radar and the SmartTraffic Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). With these technologies, (SNS) hopes to increase operational efficiency and maintain compliance with current and future industry safety regulations. The full suite of avionics also includes: quantum line communication and navigation sensors, Mode S transponders, flight data and cockpit voice recorders, Flight Data Acuquisition Management (FDAMS), and Aircraft Communications Addressing & Reporting System (ACARS).
Other low-cost carriers (LCC)s, including IndiGo (IGO) and Southwest Airlines (SWA) have recently selected (SGC) to provide safety and efficiency technologies for their new airplane fleets.
August 2015: News Item A-1: Operators using Myanmar's 2 busiest international airports, Mandalay and Yangon, can finally begin using Performance Based Navigation (PBN) practices after the country's civil aviation authority approved and validated their first ever Ground Proximity Sysytems (GPS)-based procedures, which were badly needed in the country. Both airports have now unlocked the use of (PBN), after flight validations were completed at the end of July through collaboration between experts from Hughes Aerospace and Honeywell (SGC).
Using a Cessna Caravan equipped with a retrofitted Garmin G1000 avionics package, Chris Baur (CEO) of Hughes Aerospace, led a team of Myanmar pilots (FC) through the 1st-ever (PBN) validation flight in Myanmar.
"The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) of Myanmar wanted to implement their first ever Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) procedures starting with the main airport of Yangon. They wanted a (GNSS) procedure to both ends of the runway and then Standard Instrument Departures (SIDS) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARS), based on (GNSS)," Baur told "Avionics Magazine." "The government was eager to get them implemented, and derive the benefit of having (SIDS) and (STARS), which they haven’t had before. The traffic there is definitely growing quite quickly, so this should help to address that growth."
Airlines and operators flying into both Mandalay and Yangon can begin using the new procedures immediately, Baur said. Operators will not be required to become certified or undergo any training there, as the majority of international carriers flying with modern aircraft have the avionics equipment and pilot (FC) training necessary to fly (PBN) procedures.
Like the rest of the country, Myanmar's airspace was ruled by a military junta until 2012 and had never undergone modernization of its aviation infrastructure. Over the last several years though, the Myanmar government has been rapidly modernizing its economy, and its airports.
"Their initial excitement was to get into the (PBN) global movement and do this with (GNSS) approaches," said Baur. "When we did the flight validation, we brought all of our own flight validation equipment and put it in their aircraft and conducted the flight validation and recorded the flight tracks. The aircraft flies the procedure and then we record the aircraft’s position, independent of the aircraft system to validate it. What you’re mainly looking for, aside from recording flight tracks, is the 'flyability' of the procedure, ensuring that the aircraft is able to maintain the descent or maintain the crossing restrictions."
While the initial benefits will mainly be around the safety and flight operational efficiency of aircraft flying into and out of Yangon and Mandalay, implementing (PBN) also serves as a foundation to manage future air traffic growth in the region. The Airbus Global Market Forecast for 2015 to 2034 has predicted that the Asia-Pacific region will lead the world in air traffic by 2034.
Myanmar is the 2nd major (GNSS) procedures project that the Hughes-Honeywell (SGC) partnership has completed this year, following the implementation of (GBAS) approaches in China early this year. Honeywell (SGC), like most other major USA-based suppliers, sees Myanmar and the greater Asia-Pacific region as a major area of growth for the global aviation industry. Growth begins with projects such as the recently completed ones in Myanmar, and continues with aircraft equipage and air traffic management (ATM) modernization, according to Michael Underwood, Director of Business Development at Honeywell Aerospace (SGC). "We view the aviation ecosystem in the Asia Pacific as a high growth region," said Underwood. “As such, we’re working across the full spectrum to help move and modernize not just the airplane fleets but the overall aviation infrastructure."
Beyond Myanmar, Honeywell (SGC) and Hughes are in similar talks with other Asian-Pacific countries for aircraft navigation modernization projects.
"We recently opened discussions with the civil aviation authority of Sri Lanka to talk about their (PBN) needs. They heard about what we have done in Myanmar," said Underwood. "We’ve had similar discussions in Indonesia, the Philippines, so we’re very active in that region and working to help modernize the air traffic infrastructure there."
News Item A-2: Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) and the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) (RNE) have signed an agreement with the aim to increase airplane availability, reduce maintenance grounding time and improve mission success. The service-based agreement looks to streamline collaboration on essential repair, maintenance & overhaul services for (RNE)’s fleets.
The agreement simplifies the contractual process between the (RNE) and Honeywell (SGC) for a wide range of services, including supplying parts, upgrades, product integration and long-term servicing agreements.
Today, (SGC) has avionics and mechanical technologies on >100 airplanes within the (RNE) fleet, including the CH-47 Chinook, C-130 Hercules, AH-64 Apache, and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
The agreement also includes a provision for future performance-based logistics support, which involves a commitment to ensure the necessary number of airplanes are available at all times, to improve mission readiness and return on investment for the operator.

Honeywell (SGC) is continuing to invest in China because it sees the country being a key innovator in the global air transport management (ATM) space.
“The [airspace] situation in Asia offers some great opportunities for innovations and new approaches,” Honeywell Director (ATM), Asia Pacific, Paul Nef said. “And China, as well as Japan, have been at the forefront of many of these new (ATM) innovations.”
Speaking at the Singapore Airshow on February 16, Nef said that Honeywell (SGC) was already employing 500 engineers working on a range of products and would continue to expand its (R&D) work at its Shanghai base.
Nef cited areas such as software development for next-generation satellite communications systems, and control systems for in-flight services provision as new technologies being developed at the center.
He said that the unique canvas that China presents (lack of legacy systems, extensive military airspace and a rapidly growing number of airlines with strong passenger growth) all contribute to a scenario where China needs to develop leading-edge systems in the (ATM) space.
“China is seeing purpose-driven development [in the (ATM) space] that will help other areas and countries develop their systems,” he said, adding that the country is also eyeing the opportunity to build (ATM) systems for export.

Honeywell (SGC) and Civil Aviation Resource Net have conducted a recent pilot (FC) survey focusing on Chinese-licensed pilots (FC). The survey polled civil pilots (FC) and commercial flight crews (FC) on flight operations and the key challenges and requirements they face through all phases of flight to understand their prime concerns in their current operational environment.
The survey, begun in September 2015, collected firsthand flying experiences and data from >3,000 pilots (FC) and cockpit crew (FC) members, of whom 53% were first officers (FC) and 36% were line captains (FC). Nearly 80% surveyed fly Airbus (EDS) or Boeing (TBC) airplanes, and >one-third surveyed have >5,000 flying hours.
"This is the 1st time Honeywell (SGC) has partnered with China's top aviation media outlets to conduct a pilot survey that specifically focuses on the Asia Pacific regions and China," said Brian Davis, VP Airlines, Asia Pacific at Honeywell Aerospace (SGC). "Pilots (FC) shared one of their biggest concerns and needs is advanced weather alert systems that provide early warning and location of a storm and its path. The use of the latest cockpit technologies such as the IntuVue 3-D weather radar can help pilots (FC) fly safer with better situational awareness."
* Weather Challenges During Departure, Cruise and Landing
It is no surprise that weather issues are among the top concerns for almost all pilots (FC) during all phases of flight, including departure, cruise and landing.
* For 49% of pilots (FC) surveyed, weather hazard and wind shear are the biggest challenges for safe operation during departure, takeoff and flight.
* More than half (53%) surveyed said identifying hazardous, turbulent weather is the biggest concern in cruise flight.
* During landing, 65% of respondents consider hazardous weather identification as the biggest challenge.
The use of weather radar can efficiently reduce the risk of weather issues and related delays. The development will allow JetWave to be installed and used on the single-aisle airliner, giving passengers, pilots (FC)s and operators who have access to satellite operator Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band service, (GX) Aviation, connection speeds similar to those at home or in an office.
Honeywell (SGC) said its equipment gives users access to a stable “Wi-Fi in the Sky,” allowing them to use the internet to check email, download large files, make video calls or access films on demand without a drop in service, even on transoceanic flights.
Operators and maintenance (MT) personnel can also benefit from real-time updates to maximize flight efficiency and safety.

2 quarters of soaring USA corporate profits have not yet produced the "Trump bump" in orders for new business jets that some industry executives had been hoping for, analysts said as a major business aviation gathering opened on October 10.
A hefty supply of used aircraft has limited demand for new jets, forecasters said. Deliveries of new planes are seen staying flat until 2019 even though profits on the S&P 500 have grown at a double-digit rate over the last 2 quarters.
Record corporate profits are "a necessary condition for greater new business jet deliveries, but not sufficient," said Gaetan Handfield, Senior Manager, Market Research for the Aerospace division of parts supplier Honeywell International Inc (SGC).
While the supply of preowned corporate jets is declining, prices have not recovered, said Handfield, who expects annual growth of 3 to 4% in business jet sales between 2019 to 2027, in line with global Gross Domestic Profit (GDP) growth.
Handfield noted the growing importance of international markets. The USA now accounts for just 60% of new business jet deliveries, down from 75% in the early 1990s, he said.
Honeywell (SGC) forecast that business jet deliveries would pick up in 2019 after declining by about -30 aircraft this year.
Manufacturers had hoped business jet sales would take off with the election of USA President Donald Trump, a jet setting Republican billionaire who promised tax cuts for corporations. Instead, private planes have come under fire in some quarters as a sign of excess.
Tom Price, Trump's Health & Human Services Secretary, resigned after taking private flights, and General Electric Company is reportedly shutting its corporate jet fleet to cut costs.
The National Business Aviation Association's (NBAA) convention opened in Las Vegas under heightened security, with bag and identity checks required following the mass shooting this month.
Brad Nolen, VP Marketing for business aircraft at Canada's Bombardier Inc said he has not seen a backlash over corporate jet use. He noted that the inventory of pre-owned business jets soared as high as 18% following the financial crisis. "If you saw almost 1 in 5 houses for sale it would not be a good time to be selling," he said. "So today it's more like 1 in 10 which is a much more natural, much more healthy number."
(BMB) is building 135 business jets this year, after scaling back in previous years, he said. The industry is seeing some uptick in orders, but that has not yet translated into a bump in deliveries. "We're seeing orders steadily rise, but not to the point where manufacturers have yet decided to increase production," Nolen said.

Q: As a major provider of aircraft hardware and avionics systems, Honeywell Aerospace (SGC) has established relationships with some of China's key aviation players. What is (SGC)'s plan?
A: "According to the 13th 5-Year Plan, about 50 new major airports will be established to accommodate the region's growth in air travel. We estimate that we will see 6 to 7% annual growth in passenger traffic, airplane acquisitions and total flying hours in the next 2 decades," said Lien. China's "Belt & Road Initiative" would bring greater opportunities to China, especially in the western region, Lien added.
The following are edited excerpts from the interview:
Q: How do you view China's rapid economic growth and its recent slowdown? Will this affect your business development in the market?
A: China is expected to become the world's largest aviation market in the next 20 years. According to the State Council of China, China is expected to build >500 general aviation airports across the country and own >5,000 all-purpose airplanes by 2020. In addition, China is becoming a key supplier of airplane and component systems. The government is acting as an avid supporter of this growth, emphasizing the importance of the aerospace industry for the development and growth of the country.
While (SGC) has had a presence in China since 1935, we've seen the most significant changes and growth opportunities in the past decade as the country's demands in the aviation and aerospace industries have increased. This growth is expected in part due to affordable air travel in China, which requires significant investments in new airports and technology.
Overall, Honeywell (SGC) is dedicated to its employees in China and throughout the (APAC) region. All of us at (SGC) are proud of our contributions so far, and are committed to continuing our strong local presence to help the industry development in the coming years.
Q: What are your business strategies as you re-adjust to the new Chinese economic realities such as the New Normal?
A: Under New Normal, we observed that trends such as the emergence of low-cost carriers, increased international routes and demand for new aircraft all point to continued growth. In response, Honeywell has centered itself as a key partner, supplier and innovator for the Chinese aviation industry.
Honeywell (SGC) has established relationships with some of China's key aviation players, including the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) (CCC), Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). With (SGC)'s expertise in enhancing flight safety and efficiency, we look forward to continuing to play a fundamental role in advancing air travel in China and around the world.
Q: How do you assess the prospects of your business in China in conjunction with the Chinese market and economy?
A: (SGC) is proud of our contributions to the thriving Chinese aviation industry over the past several years. Working closely with our world-class customers, partners and vendors, we are involved in many of the country's most critical aviation, aircraft and airport initiatives.
We will continue to support airlines and other operators with maintenance solutions, upgrades and retrofit solutions to make their fleets safer, more efficient and more comfortable.
Q: What do you think of the opportunities and challenges facing your company amid the recent "Belt & Road Initiative" in China? How does your company fit into the national strategy?
A: (SGC) is well-positioned to support this initiative through its unique China growth strategies -"East for East" and "East to Rest." Under these strategies, we follow the growth, proactively advocating locally developed innovation and partnering with leading Chinese companies to explore opportunities in high-growth regions around the world. In one specific area, China is predicted to become the world's largest helicopter market over the next 30 years, and (SGC) is prepared to support this via our propulsion, avionics systems, connectivity and service offerings.
China's Belt & Road Initiative will bring greater opportunities to China, especially in the western region, with its rugged topography that's highly suitable for helicopter use. Some of our distinctive technologies, such as the (HTS)-900 engine, can help overcome the challenges of operating in those environments.
Q: How do you see aviation industry in China in 2017 and the next few years?
A: The growth of China's aviation industry has been so consistent and robust that people sometimes forget just how far it has come in a relatively short time. China has become a major global player in aviation for the foreseeable future.
For example, expansion is expected to continue in the airline sector, driven by continued rapid growth of the economy and fast urbanization of the population. The government has a strong commitment to supporting aviation infrastructure and new aerospace technology.
According to the 13th 5-Year Plan, about 50 new major airports will be established to accommodate the region's growth in air travel. We estimate that we will see 6 to 6% annual growth in passenger traffic, airplane acquisitions and total flying hours in the next 2 decades.
In addition, we expect to see tremendous growth in helicopter usage across China, already seeing 20% growth compared to the number of helicopters in 2015 alone. Demand is being driven largely by the need for helicopters to support missions in law enforcement, emergency medical services and natural resources.
As a result of these favorable projections, we will likely see an increase in aircraft purchased from Western companies such as Boeing (TBC) and Airbus (EDS), as well as from Chinese manufacturers including (COMAC) (CCC),(AVIC) and others.
Q: Do you have any plans for new investments in China over the next few years?
A: As a company, we are actively involved in the development of China's aviation industry and provide continuous support for our local team and partners as well as research and development through comprehensive long-term development programs.
As an example, in June of 2016, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC), forming a partnership to develop next generation talent for China's growing aviation industry. By working together with top-tier universities like (CAUC), we can contribute significantly to the future of China's aviation industry.
We will continue such talent development efforts and keep improving the professional training in the next few years.
In addition, we will continue to look at the capabilities of our current manufacturing, engineering and joint venture facilities with eyes towards expanding their offerings wherever it makes business sense.
Q: Do you plan to add to your R&D efforts in China?
A: In fact, Honeywell (SGC) has plans to expand our (APAC) regional headquarters and research & development facilities in Shanghai's Zhangjiang High-Tech Park. With this new investment in China, we will accommodate continued and consistent business development across the country.
Q: How do you handle hardships and setbacks?
A: All companies, including us, our customers and partners, face hardships and setbacks. In any of these situations, we will 1st analyze to determine what the real problems and needs are behind those hardships, and then we will seek appropriate solutions to handle them as needed.
As for my role, I oversee the whole process, and work out next steps with my team members, securing resources to help the team deal with the hardships. I believe team work is core to successfully handling the hardships and delivering successful results.
Most importantly, we prioritize each hardship and setback, and after they are handled, we debrief to understand why it occurred, and what we can do to improve the situation next time.
