August 2002: Possible merger with AIRG (LAZ) breaks down. Instead, AIRG (LAZ) owner, Eduardo Eurnekian agreed to sell AIRG (LAZ), to Aeroandina SA (Aerosur of Bolivia) (REO). The new airline will keep its offices at Aeroparque, as well as maintain its current routes. The intent of Aerosur (REO), is to break away its maintenance department from the airline flying business to operate as an independent Maintenance Repair & Overhaul (MRO), to be named "Aeropuertos 2000," which is owned by Eduardo Eurnekian.

April 2005: LAN (LAN) forms LAN Argentina (LNR) by acquiring local Argentine charter airline Aero2000, a company which belonged to Argentine businessman, Miguel Ciadi. It had been set up in 2001 and has rights to fly to Cordoba, Iguazu, Calafate, Bariloche, Montevideo, Santiago de Chile, Miami, and Madrid. The Argentine Government has given the go-ahead for (LNR) to be set up on condition it takes on all the staff of Argentinian Government operator Lafsa (LAZ) (1,440) and regional operator Aerovip, plus support Southern Winds (SOW) for three months. The plan is for (LNR) to eventually absorb (SOW) staff, should the airline be unsuccessful in its bankruptcy protection.

May 2005: Files for bankruptcy protection.

Meanwhile an investigation into a drug trafficking scandal, allegedly involving Southern Winds (SOW) staff is continuing with the questioning of Enrique Montero, Vice President, who was on the same flight to Madrid's Barajas airport as an unmarked suitcase containing 132 lb (60 kg) of cocaine.

December 2005: An Argentine ground transport consortium that operates 10 bus lines and two railroads has taken over Southern Winds (SOW). Grupo Plaza, headed by Claudio Cirigliano, has agreed to provide financing and management for the troubled airline. It has not bought the airline shares owned by founder Juan Maggio and his brother.

May 2012: Southern Winds (SOW), based at Buenos Aires Aeroparque Jorge Newberry airport (AEP)) is reportedly planning to resume charter operations on behalf of Argentinian tour operators with two A320-200s. It had suspended all operations seven years ago in 2005.
