Formed in 2003 and started operations in 2004.
February 2003: United Airlines (UAL) continues plans for low-fare subsidiary, to be staffed by current employees. Says it will ultimately shift about 30% of its domestic capacity to this new unit. Names Sean Donohue, VP Low-cost Carrier, to lead its development. Intends to use about 130 of its Airbus airplanes for its proposed low-cost carrier, code-named "Starfish."
March 2005: TED (TED) is planning to expand its fleet by +20% and incease its service from its Denver, Washington Dulles, & Chicago hubs to markets in Florida, Mexico, & the Caribbean in 2005. TED, which was launched in 2/04, operates an average of 208 daily flights to 16 destinations. TED's A320's will grow from 47 to 56 by converting 9 mainline airplanes.
July 2003: New low-cost carrier referred to as "Starfish" will have 40 airplanes and is expected to serve leisure travel stops such as Las Vegas.
September 2003: Intends to launch its still-unnamed "low-cost operation" next 2/04, with 4 A320's, 156 PAX economy plus seating, from Denver. Initial cities to be served are Las Vegas, New Orleans, Orlando, Ontario, Phoenix, and Tampa.
November 2003: Splits the name "UNITED" in half, and as "UNI" is already taken by an airline in Taiwan, it picks "TED" as its new name for its low-fare unit, set to take-off from its hub in Denver (DIA) in 2/04. Will use A320 airplanes, 156 PAX, including 66 seats with extra leg room. Expects to have 45 airplanes in its fleet by end of 2004. Airplanes will be in blue and marigold-orange colors, will offer food for sale (a la carte) and possibly pay-per-view TV programming. Will fly to at least 8 leisure markets including Las Vegas, Phoenix, & Fort Lauderdale. Destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean are under consideration.

Febuary 2004: TED's (TED) 1st flight, Denver (DEN) - Fort Lauderdale. By end of 3/03, will have 52 daily flights from (DEN) to Reno, Las Vegas, Phoenix, New Orleans, Tampa, Orlando, Ontario (California), & Fort Lauderdale. Also, service Las Vegas to Los Angeles & San Francisco, and San Francisco to Phoenix. In 4/04, TED to operate from Washington Dulles (IAD). (IAD) - Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa. Expects to serve 12% of domestic market by late summer.
March 2004: TED (TED) reached 82% Load Factor (LF) in its 1st month of flying. By end of 3/04, will have 52 daily departures. TED is expanding service to Chicago O'Hare (ORD), United Airlines (UAL)'s home market and largest hub. TED, Ontario (California) - Denver (DEN) (4/day). September 2005: United Airlines (UAL)' low-fare unit Ted (TED) will take over mainline service from Chicago O'Hare to West Palm Beach beginning 12/05. (TED) will start Saturday-only service from O'Hare to Los Cabos in 10/05, rising to four times per week from 12/05.
October 2005: (UAL) has applied for 5 new routes into Mexico. If approved, service would begin this coming winter. The applications are all for peak-season service and include two new routes between Chicago and Mexico, including Ted (TED) service to Cancun 11 times a week and daily (UAL) service to Puerto Vallarta. In addition, United also applied for three new daily Ted (TED) routes between Los Angeles and Mexico - - specifically to San Jose del Cabo (Cabo San Lucas), Puerto Vallarta and Cancun.
January 2006: United Airlines' Ted (TED) low-cost subsidiary said it will become the first carrier to use the DoubleDocker Bridge boarding system, an over-wing bridge that allows passengers to enter or exit an airplane from front and/or rear doors. An earlier version of the bridge was used in Canada. Ted (TED) initially will install the system at Denver International Airport's Concourse B and expects to have five bridges in place by year end. Dewbridge Airport Systems of New York designed the bridge mainly for use on narrowbody airplanes. Ted (TED) operates A320s.
United Airlines (UAL) has begun using one dual-end, over-the-wing boarding bridge at Denver International Airport. "Our customers, especially those in the rear of the plane, are already telling us they love the convenience of the new bridges. Also, because we can board customers faster, we are able to eventually add more flights without adding new airplanes," VP Operational Services, United Express and Ted (TED), Alex Marren said. The bridge was developed by Debridge Airport Systems. (UAL) said it will expand its use to "additional gates and other airports" soon.
November 2007: United Airlines (UAL) is abandoning testing of dual-end jetbridges following a malfunction in which a double-ended bridge hit and damaged the wing of a 757 at Denver International (DIA). "The technology [tested mainly on Ted (TED) flights at (DIA)] did not meet our needs," a (UAL) spokesperson told "The Denver Post."
February 2008: INCDT: A320-232 (780, N442UA) slid off runway on landing in Wyoming = no injuries of any on board.
June 2008: United Airlines (UAL), facing rising fuel costs and a weak USA economy, announced a dramatic downsizing that will see its Ted (TED) service discontinued, and include the retirement over the next 19 months of 100 airplanes with the aim of reducing mainline capacity by a cumulative -17% to -18% for 2008 to 2009. Following a steep first-quarter loss, (UAL) previously announced "fundamental" changes including retiring 30 737s. It now has added another -64 of the type to its cut list, meaning that its entire 737 fleet will be grounded. It also plans to retire six 747-400s. It said 80 of the 100 retirements will occur this year with the remaining 20 coming by year end 2009. Its fourth-quarter 2008 mainline capacity will be down -9.5% to -10.5% year-over-year with North American capacity lowered by -13.5% to -14.5%, compared to the 2007 final quarter.
(UAL) additionally will eliminate its Ted (TED) product, reconfiguring that fleet's 56 A320s to include first class (F) seats for a return to mainline service by year end 2009. Salaried and management employees and contractors will be cut by -1,400 to -1,600 including -500 personnel cuts previously revealed. The airline has not determined how many frontline jobs will be affected. Chairman, President & CEO, Glenn Tilton said the "aggressive steps . . . demonstrate our commitment to size our business appropriately to reflect the current market reality, leverage capacity discipline to pass commodity costs on to customers, develop new revenue streams and continue to reduce nonfuel costs and capital expenditures." In a message to employees, COO, John Tague said the cuts are necessary "to assure United (UAL)'s long-term viability." He explained that retirement of the 737 fleet will "dramatically simplify our fleet and reduce our maintenance liability." Further, the retirements will remove the "oldest and least fuel-efficient jets" from service, reducing the average age of (UAL)'s fleet by -1.3 years to 11.8 years.
Also announced were management changes, including the departures of Senior VP Flight Operations & Onboard Services, Sean Donohue and Senior VP United Services, Bill Norman. Former Delta Air Lines (DAL) executive, Joe Kolshak will come onboard as Senior VP Operations. Alexandria Marren was promoted to Senior VP Onboard Service, while Cindy Szadokierski, who had been responsible for Operations Control, was named VP United Express & Airport Operations Planning.
"This environment demands that we and the industry act decisively and responsibly," Tilton said, adding that (UAL) must "reduce costs and increase revenue to respond to record fuel costs and the challenging economic environment." He added that the carrier remains committed to all of its hubs.
January 2009: TED (TED) is integrated back into United Airlines (UAL).
