November 2007: ATR signed a Memo of Understanding (MOU) with Mexican carrier, Aeromar (TRO) for 2 (PW127M)-powered ATR72-500s. The value of the agreement is >$36 million, ATR said. The airplanes will be equipped with the Elegance cabin and In-flight Entertainment (IFE).

December 2010: Continental Airlines (CAL) announced it hopes to begin code sharing with Mexico's Aeromar (TRO) early next year following the restoration of Mexico’s return to (FAA) Category 1 safety rating.

January 2011: Aeromar (TRO) and Continental Airlines (CAL) reached a code share arrangement under which (CAL) will place its code on Aeromar (TRO) service from Mexico City to 13 destinations in Mexico beginning February 1.

November 2012: Mexican boutique regional carrier, Aeromar (TRO) plans to diversify its network to include new routes to the USA, as it faces increasing competition at its Mexico City base.

(TRO) is considering destinations in Texas' Rio Grande Valley and others south of San Antonio, says Fabricio Cojuc Wolfowitz VP Network Planning & Corporate Development at Aeromar (TRO). It is also considering expanding its small focus city in Poza Rica on Mexico's Gulf Coast. He says that (TRO) will continue to operate on its "bread-and-butter" network (routes with stage lengths of up to 300 miles/480 km from Mexico City) but rationally add new destinations where it can take advantage of untapped niches.

"The core of our network faces increasing competition from airlines like [Aeromexico (AMX)] Connect or from airlines who are bringing 100-seaters like Interjet (AAE)," says Wolfowitz. "There is going to be more intense competition in the years to come and how we prepare ourselves is by modernizing our fleet and looking at markets that can support service where a jet or a larger airplane likely would not be able to make it profitable."

Aeromar (TRO) bought 2 ATR72-600s with deliveries scheduled for 2013 to replace older and smaller ATR42-300s. It also acquired 2 Bombardier CRJ200s earlier this year.

Aeromexico (AMX), Interjet (AAE) and Volaris (VLS) all have large outstanding airplane orders that, depending on where they are deployed, could add significant additional capacity to Mexico's domestic network. (AMX) has 67 737 current generation and 737 Maxs on order, (AAE) has 65 A320 family current generation and A320neos plus Sukhoi Superjets SSJ100s, and Volaris (VLS) has 53 A320 family current generation and A320neos.

Concerns regarding the "ability to preserve the slots you have" at Mexico City have replaced those on the availability of slots at the airport, says Wolfowitz. He explains that there is no regulatory framework governing how the landing and takeoff rights are granted and taken away, which could become an issue as competition heats up.

The availability of slots was a concern for (TRO) prior to the demise of Mexicana Airlines (CMA) in 2010.

Aeromar (TRO) hopes to build on its code share partnership with United Airlines (UAL). Launched with Continental Airlines (CAL) prior to its merger with (UAL) in 2010, (TRO) is a member of the (UAL)'s frequent flyer program "MileagePlus" and feeds its flights at Mexico City. "We have a foundation for a very powerful partnership," says Wolfowitz. He says that it is "developing" and that he anticipates expanding the relationship as (UAL) establishes its long-term strategy for Mexico.

Code shares with other airlines are not out of the question but Wolfowitz says that (TRO) is content with its 18 interline agreements.

Air Lease Corporation (ALE) has placed 2 new ATR72-600s from its order pipeline on long-term lease to Mexico’s Aeromar (TRO), scheduled for delivery between April and May 2013.

December 2012: Aeromar Airlines ((IATA) Code: VW, based at México City Benito Juárez International airport (MEX)) (TRO) has received permission to resume regional services to the USA. (TRO) plans to serve 3 destinations in Texas from 2013. It initially plans to resume services to San Antonio International (SAT), which it had previously served, from Manzanillo Sierra Maestra (MZO), Saltillo Plan de Guadelupe International (SLW) and San Luis Potosí Ponciano Arriaga International (SLP). But (TRO) has also applied for rights to operate to Harlingen Valley International (HRL) and McAllen Miller International (MFE) that it plans to serve at a later stage.

March 2013: Aeromar (TRO), which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, commenced operations on its only USA route on March 18, as it launched 5x-weekly flights from Mexico City (MEX) to McAllen, Texas (MFE). McAllen is close to the Mexican border, on the southern tip of Texas. Flights on the 750 km route are carried out using CRJ-200s. (TRO) is planning to reduce frequencies to 3x-weekly, effective 8 April. When the route was announced in January, (TRO)’s President Ami Lindenberg said, “For 25 years, we have been committed to the Mexican market by offering high quality air transport service. Today, we are proudly announcing a new chapter for the company: our 1st international flight to McAllen, Texas. Aeromar (TRO) is truly grateful that this City welcomes foreign investment and that it believes in the reliability and the constancy of our company. This announcement is indeed a day for celebration and the start of much more to come for (TRO). We are fully committed to this new partnership.”

Branded as Mexico’s “Executive Airline”, (TRO) offers flights to a total of 18 destinations throughout the country from Mexico City, and now adds McAllen in Texas as its 1st international destination.

June 2013: Aeromar (TRO) has taken delivery of the 1st of 2 ATR72-600s (1086, XA-NLP) on long-term lease from Air Lease Corporation (ALE). The delivery makes (TRO) the 1st operator of the ATR72-600 series airplane in the region.

(TRO) has 14 ATR airplanes in its fleet, comprising 10 ATR42-500s and 4 ATR42-320s. The newly acquired 68Y seat turboprops will replace the smaller ATR42-320 allowing the airline to further boost service to Mexico City, Poza Rica, San Luis Potosi, and Ciudad Victoria.

“Following the leasing of the new ATR airplanes, (TRO) seeks to maintain its fleet as one of the freshest among the Latin American airlines,” (TRO) Executive VP Fabricio Cojuc said. “By renewing our fleet, we are aiming at more efficient operations. The ATR72-600 offers superior passenger capacity compared to the smaller airplane models and lower fuel consumption per seat. In addition, they are very reliable and that should help with punctuality.”

August 2013: Aeromar (TRO) will begin 5x-weekly, Austin to Mexico City Bombardier CRJ-200 service on October 21.

October 2013: Aeromar (TRO) has become the 1st airline to connect Mexico City (MEX) with Austin, Texas (AUS), since Aeromexico (AMX) dropped the route in June 2008. Flights began on October 21 and will operate 5x-weekly (daily, except Tuesday and Saturday) using (TRO)’s 50-seat CRJ 200LRs. Announcing the service back in August, Fabricio Cojuc, Aeromar (TRO)’s Executive VP Chief Planning & Commercial Officer, said: “Aeromar is very pleased to expand its presence in the great state of Texas with the addition of Austin to our growing route network. We are convinced that the convenience of our Mexico City nonstop service will be instrumental in further deepening the important and close relationship that exists between the capital city of Texas and Mexico in economic, demographic and cultural terms.” The route will also be a big boost for Mexican Grand Prix fans, who will now have a non-stop flight to see their local heroes Sergio Perez (McLaren) and Esteban Gutiérrez (Sauber), compete in the USA F1 Grand Prix in Austin, at the Circuit of the Americas, on the weekend of November 16 to 17. Aeromar (TRO)’s fleet currently comprises 18 airplanes: 14 ATR42s, 2 ATR72-600ss and 2 CRJ 200LRs. In 2012, (TRO) carried 560,000 passengers in the Mexican domestic market, claiming a market share of around 2%.

November 2013: Aeromar (TRO) has added another international route to its network with the addition of non-stop flights between Mexico City and San Luis Potosi (SLP) to McAllen, Texas (MFE). Service on began on November 14th and will usually operate 3x-weekly, with additional flights at Christmas and Easter. Aeromar (TRO) will use its 46-seat ATR 42s on the route, which is its 2nd to McAllen, as it began services from Mexico City in March of this year. Later it will introduce Mexico City to Austin.

April 2014: Aeromar (TRO) unveiled a new livery on its 3rd Bombardier CRJ200 (XA-UTF - - SEE ATTACHED - - "TRO-2014-04-CRJ200").

September 2014: Mexico’s Aeromar (TRO) has been around since the late 1980s offering niche regional services primarily from Mexico City’s main airport. Annual domestic passenger numbers have oscillated between just >400,000 and just >600,000 (in 2006) with (TRO) introducing a handful of international flights to the USA in the last 18 months. According to (TRO)’s website, its fleet comprises 14 ATR42s, 2 ATR72-600s and 3 CRJ200s, the most recent of which joined the fleet in January.

In the 1st 7 months of 2014, domestic passenger numbers are down -1.5% to >300,000. According to Mexican government statistics, Aeromar (TRO)’s share of the Mexican domestic market has been between 1.4% and 1.8% during 2014. Since last September, (TRO) has dropped 2 routes from Mexico City (Aguascalientes and Saltillo), as well as links between Toluca and Veracruz, and between Piedras Negras and Saltillo. Only 3 new routes have been started during the same period:

* Mexico City (MEX) to Austin (AUS) on October 21 2013;
* San Luis Potosi (SLP) to McAllen (MFE) on November 14 2013; and
* Mexico City (MEX) to Piedras Negras (PDS) on January 21 2014.

This leaves (TRO) operating a total of 21 routes this September. Of these, 9 are operated at least 2x-daily. On 3 of (TRO)’s 5 busiest routes in terms of weekly frequency, there is no direct competition. On other routes competition is provided by Aeromexico (AMX) and Interjet (AAE). Aeromar (TRO) launched its 1st international route on March 18th 2013 with the introduction of 5x-weekly flights between Mexico City and McAllen-Miller International Airport in Texas using a CRJ. This was followed last October with the start of flights to Austin (also from Mexico City), while November saw a 2nd route to McAllen being introduced from San Luis Potosi. According to government statistics, (TRO) carried 13,741 passengers on its international network in 2013, giving it a market share of just 0.05% on international routes from Mexico. This has risen to 0.07% in the 1st 7 months of 2014. In July, for the 1st time, it broke through the 0.1% barrier carrying 3,266 passengers on international routes.

December 2016: Mexico City-based Aeromar (TRO) took delivery of its 1st ATR42-600, out of a contract for 8 firm ATR42-600s (6 ATR 72-600s and 2 ATR42-600s) and options for +6 ATR72-600s announced in November.

With this 1st delivery, Aeromar (TRO) starts progressively replacing its previous generation fleet of 9 ATR42-500s and 4 ATR42-300s. (TRO) already operates 2 ATR72-600s, introduced in 2013.

The introduction of the new ATR42-600s and ATR72-600s, configured with 48Y and 72Y seats, respectively, will also enable Aeromar (TRO) to add passenger capacity, boost the number of main routes, and create new connections within its regional network across the country.

(TRO) (CEO) Andrés Fabre said, “The ATR 72-600s are the optimal solution for our needs in terms of short-haul connectivity. In order to further enhance our ability to meet our passengers’ expectations, with the new ATR72-600s we will be providing them with the most modern standards of comfort and cabin interiors design.”

August 2017: Aeromar (TRO) has begun domestic flights between Mexico City (MEX) and Monclova (LOV). Launched August 9, this becomes (LOV)’s 1st scheduled service since the then-named Continental Airlines (CAL) ended its route from Houston Intercontinental in September 2008. Operating at a 5x-weekly frequency, (TRO) will fly the 869 km airport pair on its fleet of ATR42-500s, although the 1st service was carried out by 1 of (TRO)’s ATR72-600s, as confirmed by Flightradar24.com data. Andrés Fabré, Managing Director of (TRO), said that this route will exploit the potential of a highly industrial region, and recognized the coordinated work carried out between the State Government, Coahuila businessmen and of course (TRO).

With this launch, Aeromar (TRO) is now operating 17 routes from Mexico City this summer, on up to 185x-weekly flights.
