SOUTH AFRICA (REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA) WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1910. THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ARE: AFRIKAANS, & ENGLISH. IT COVERS AN AREA OF 1.12M SQ KM. THE POPULATION IS 44 MILLION. THE CAPITAL CITY IS PRETORIA.

April 2008: Velvet Sky (VLV) is established by a diverse group of local businessmen as a low cost carrier (LCC) with plans to become South Africa's first 100% Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) airline company.

It plans to operate initially in "The Golden Triangle" linking Durban with Johannesburg, and Cape Town.

February 2011: 737-3S3 (24059, ZS-SPU), ex-Safair (SFA), AerGo Capital (CLG) leased delivery. Airplane maintenance by South African Airways (SAA) Technical, Johannesburg.

March 2011: With South African Airways (SAA) transferring its domestic routes to its subsidiary, Mango Airlines (MGO) to prevent growing low cost carriers (LCC)s Kululu.com (KUL) and 1Time (1TA) from gaining market share, Velvet Sky (VLV) would appear to have identified a niche for providing a more "up market" product for passengers who are looking for higher standards of air travel and who are willing to pay more.

Following on the success of the 2010 World Cup of Soccer held in South Africa and the movement of the financial world out of recession, the increased volume of air passengers has led Velvet Sky (VLV) to believe that the market is ready for a new player. According to statistics released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the South African air travel market is expanding rapidly after the global economic recession of the last 2 years. This has resulted in a lower initial cost which can therefore be passed on to their clients in the form of lower fares without lowering any standards. The increased number of current air passengers, has led both organizations to forecast positive growth in the commercial aviation market in coming years.

The inaugural flight took off from Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB) on 22 March 2011 on the Johannesburg/Durban route, with the Johannesburg/Cape Town route following shortly after.

Velvet Sky (VLV)'s first flight VZ001 left Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport, landing in Durban King Shaka International Airport (KZN) at about 11:25 am, with water cannons forming a ceremonial “water curtain” as the 737-300 airplane taxied towards its terminal. There were 50 guests on board, including underprivileged students from the Ikusasa School of Cooking and Cecil Reddy (Velvet Sky Chairman). At King Shaka Airport they were met inter alia by Fawzia Peer (an eThekwini councillor), Dhevan Pillay (Velvet Sky (VLV) CEO), and media representatives. "Watching the plane in the Velvet Sky (VLV) colors land was surreal. It was a dream come true and represents the culmination of more than three years of hard work," said Pillay. “It is historic and exciting to have the first Durban-based domestic airline and operating out of King Shaka Airport. It is clearly evident that our new airport has become a major catalyst for economic growth in (KZN),” said Terence Delomoney (King Shaka Airport general manager). October 2011: Velvet Sky (VLV) will launch service from Durban to Port Elizabeth (3X-weekly, on November 4) and Cape Town (5X-weekly, on November 7).
