April 2006: FlyWho (WHO) plans transatlantic services starting in July 2006, with an L-1011-500 Tristar with a mixed cabin. In conjunction with specialist tour operator, GoVisitAmerica, the new venture plans 2 per week, non-stop flights from Birmingham's International Airport (BHX) to Orlando Sanford and a weekly flight to St Petersburg-Clearwater.
It was originally launched with the name "FlyBlu," but after complaints from the USA about the similarity of the name with another airline, it changed its name to FlyWho (WHO).
"Each year, around 1.6 million Britons travel to Florida, with well over 50,000 people owning properties there, mainly in Orlando, yet the Midlands is still extremely underserved for direct flights," founder and CEO of FlyWho (WHO) and GoVisitAmerica.com, Aden Murcutt said.
(BHX) is the UK's second largest airport outside London, the third largest for charter traffic, and the UK's fifth largest overall. In 2005, it handled 9.4 million passengers, +5.8% more than the previous year.
