September 2005: China Airlines (CHI) joined with Cargolux (CLX) to take a 49% stake in Shanghai-based Yangtze River Express (YTH). The cargo carrier (YTH) operates 4 737-300QCs and transports cargo within China for (UPS). According to a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, China Airlines (CHI) will pay 312.5 million yuan/$38.6 million for its 25% stake. Hainan Airlines (HNA) has a 15% holding.

January 2006: Taiwan's China Airlines (CHI) acquired a 25% stake in Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH). (CHI) Chairman Philip Wei attended a share transfer ceremony in Beijing finalizing the company's acquisition of shares in Yangtze River (YTH). The deal was valued at $38.7 million, according to media reports. Total share transfer among 4 investors was for 49%. Other partners include Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, which holds a 12% stake; Wan Hai Lines with 6%, and China Container Express Lines with 6%.

Established near Shanghai Hongqiao in 2002, (YTH) provides regional and domestic air cargo services originating from Shanghai with 6 737-300Fs. (YTH) flies to Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh and Singapore and has secured traffic rights to Los Angeles and Frankfurt. (YTH) will introduce 2 747Fs this year. It is a subsidiary of the (HNA) Group, which also owns Hainan Airlines (HNA) among other carriers.

China Airlines (CHI) appointed Yung-hsiang Liu, currently VP, Europe, to be the new (CEO) of Yangtze River Express (YTH). The investment is part of (CHI)'s strategy of establishing air cargo operations in mainland China.

April 2006: Yangtze River Express Airline (YTH), the cargo subsidiary of Hainan Airlines (HNA), will inaugurate direct cargo service from Shanghai to Boston this summer. Flights will be operated with a 747F.

May 2006: Yangtze River Express (YTH) has wet-leased a 747-200SF from Air Atlanta Icelandic (AID) for 12 months. The 747 is scheduled to be delivered on June 24th and this is Air Atlanta (AID)'s 1st wet lease agreement in China.

May 2007: (DHL) is launching a 10x-weekly service connecting Qingdao and Hangzhou with its Hong Kong hub. The route, to be operated by a Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH) 737-300F, is part of (DHL)'s commitment to invest an additional $110 million in the Chinese market over "the next few years" through its (DHL)-Sinotrans joint venture with China National Foreign Trade Transportation Corp. It already has opened a 2,000 sq m facility at Hangzhou.

September 2007: Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH), took delivery of a 747-400F freighter on dry lease and used it to launch service to Luxemburg. President, Sun Hongxiang revealed that (YTH) plans to open new routes from Shanghai to Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta and Dallas over the next 2 to 3 years. (YTH) currently operates flights from Shanghai to Los Angeles and New York (JFK).

November 2008: Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH) resumed 4x-weekly, Shanghai to Los Angeles with a converted 747-400SF. (YTH) will take delivery of a 3rd 747-400F next year, and said it intends to fly to other USA destinations.

May 2009: Yangtze River Express (YTH) will extend its Shanghai to Los Angeles freighter service to Dallas/Fort Worth 4x-weekly beginning May 22.

November 2009: Hainan Airlines (HNA) parent, the (HNA) Group launched a business jet subsidiary in Shanghai in an attempt to tap the increasing potential of the high-end business (C) and general aviation market. Deer Business Jet Company has registered capital of CNY300 million/$43.9 million, with (HNA) subsidiaries, Deer Air (DER) and Yangtze River Express (YTH) the main stakeholders. The ownership structure has not been made public. It initially will operate 2 Hawker 800s. China currently has no >30 business jets, but it is estimated the country will need 600 to 1,200 over the next 10 years.

September 2010: 747-409F (30762, B-2436), China Airlines (CHI) leased, ex-(N768CL).

March 2011: (BOC) Aviation (SIL) reached an agreement to lease 5 A330-200Fs on order from Airbus (EDS) with Hainan Airlines (HNA). The airplanes are scheduled to be delivered in 2012 and 2013 and will be operated by Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH), a subsidiary of the (HNA) Group.

(HNA) Group Chairman, Chen Feng said, "The aircraft will meet our capacity demands which have been increasing on the back of the global economic recovery."

June 2012: Yangtze River Express (YTH) has taken delivery of the 1st of 5 A330-200F freighters (1175, B-5900) on June 18. Sister carrier, Hong Kong Airlines (CRY) already operates 3 A330Fs from Hong Kong.

July 2012: 737-3Q8F (26325, B-2963), (ILF) leased.

July 2013: The (HNA) Group, parent of Hainan Airlines (HNA), intends to wholly own Yangtze River Express (YTH).

November 2013: Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services has completed the 1st of 3 737-400 passenger-to-freighter conversions for Yangtze River Express (YTH) under a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) held by Aeronautical Engineers (MT).

January 2014: On January 16, Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH) made an inaugural flight on its Shanghai Pudong to Xiamen to Hong Kong route. The cargo service is operated 6x-weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, using A330-243Fs.

Though facing a downturn in its domestic and overseas air cargo market, (YTH) has opened new cargo routes, and optimized its international cargo network that covers Asia, Europe and the USA.

As of January 2014, (YTH) has a total of 19 all-cargo airplanes, including 15 Boeing 737-300F freighters, 3 Boeing 747-400Fs and 1 Airbus A330F freighter.

April 2014: Yangtze River Express Airlines Company, Ltd ((IATA) Code: Y8) (YTH) took delivery of its 17th Boeing 737 all-cargo airplane with a new plane landing smoothly at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) at 4:00 pm on April 24. The newly introduced freighter, registration number (B-2501), brings the airline's fleet size up to 20 airplanes.

It is learnt that Yangtze River Express (YTH) will assign the new 737F to operate Shanghai Pudong to Beijing and Shanghai Pudong to Chengdu routes from April 28, to add capacity and enhance its network.

By April 2014, (YTH) operates a fleet of 20 all-cargo airplanes, including 17 737-300Fs, and 3 747-400Fs. Moreover, (YTH) will optimize its international cargo network that centers in Shanghai, covering Asia, Europe and America.

August 2014: (PEMCO) World Air Services (ASC) has redelivered +3 more Boeing 737-300Fs freighters to Yangtze River Express (YTH) over the past several weeks.

Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services redelivered the 3rd of 3 Boeing 737-400 passenger-to-freighter conversions to Hainan Airlines (HNA) and Yangtze River Express (YTH), both subsidiaries of the (HNA) Group.

June 2015: Yangtse River Express (YTH) has launched a new service connecting Munich Airport (MUC) Germany. Its Boeing 747-400F arrives in (MUC) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Amsterdam and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from Brussels, before departing for China, landing 1st in Tianjin and then continuing on to Shanghai. The flight will give an added push to Munich'S cargo segment, which in 2013 handled 290,000 tons (a hefty +8% gain over the previous year's total.

Handling service for (YTH) at Munich Airport will be provided by the airport's ground handling subsidiary, AeroGround Flughafen Munchen GmbH. AeroGround has signed a full handling agreement with Yangtse River Express (YTH) to run until 2018.

Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH) has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to expand its operation into the passenger service market, according to a notice released on the (CAAC)'s website.

Until now, (YTH) has only been granted rights to operate both domestic (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan inclusive) and international cargo flights.

It is now applying to expand its business scope to cover domestic passenger services as well as domestic (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) and international cargo business.

(YTH), based at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the (HNA) Group. Founded in July 2002, (YTH) owns a fleet of 23 cargo airplanes, including 20 737Fs and 3 747Fs. Until now (YTH) has operated purely as a cargo carrier, offering scheduled and on-demand cargo charter services.

The Department of Air Transportation (CAAC) has begun soliciting public comments on the application until July 15, 2015.

October 2015: News Item A-1: On the opening day of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Global Show in Dubai, Thales (THL) announced its continued growth in China, with the signing of a contract to implement its latest Air Traffic Management (ATM) automation systems for the Shanghai Metroplex air space.

(THL) and Beijing Easy Sky Technology (BEST), a Thales – (TEDC) joint venture (JV), have jointly signed a contract with the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC), East Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB), in order to implement a new (ATM) automation system in Shanghai.

Through this contract, (THL), together with (BEST), will upgrade the Shanghai airspace and airport management systems. This will include the Shanghai terminal maneuvering area and surface operations at Shanghai Pudong and Shanghai Hongqiao airports.

The contract includes implementation of (THL) "TopSky-(ATC)." (THL) will also deploy "TopSky-Tower," its advanced, integrated tower automation suite, at both Shanghai airports. Airport and airspace traffic flows will be sequenced and balanced using (MAESTRO), (THL)'s fully integrated arrival and departure management system.

This is a crucial contract for the region, as collectively, the Shanghai Metroplex (incorporating both Shanghai airports) ranks just behind Beijing in China, and is in the top 10 in the world, in terms of air traffic movements. With air traffic in the region set to grow at a steady +20% over the next 10 years, the modernization program will be instrumental in maintaining the projected growth rate, while supporting excellence in air safety for the Shanghai Metroplex.

December 2015: (HNA) Group subsidiary, Yangtze River Airlines launches passenger service on December 15 with 2x-daily Boeing 737 flights on 3 routes from Shanghai to Sanya, Guiyang, and Zhuhai, according to President, Yang Zhihua.

The Shanghai-based Yangtze River Airlines has been converted from cargo carrier, Yangtze River Express Airlines (YTH), which launched in 2002, and operates a fleet of 23 freighters on >40 domestic and international routes.

Due to the depressed cargo market, Yangtze River Express Airlines applied to launch passenger operations and was renamed Yangtze River Airlines, but continues to maintain cargo operations despite an “adjusted” order for 40 wide body freighters.

Yangtze River Airlines (YTH) introduced 3 Boeing 737-800 passenger aircraft this year and is expected to take delivery of 3 to 6 passenger aircraft next year, which may include Airbus A330 wide bodies. It plans to expand its passenger fleet to nearly 20 aircraft in the next few years.

Hangzhou-based, China Loong Airlines (CDC) and Shenzhen-based, Donghai Airlines (EPA) have also launched passenger operations to help compensate for the stagnant cargo market.

November 2016: News Item A-1: Hainan Airlines (HNA) announced on November 28 that its subsidiary, Yunan Lucky Air (LKY) is planning to set up a new carrier in Chengdu, capital city of SW China's Sichuan Province.

Lucky Air (LKY) will partner with local state-owned companies to invest 3 billion yuan in the new Chengdu Shenniao Airlines, which could become the 8th base carrier at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport following Air China (BEJ) Southwest Brance, Sichuan Airlines (SIC), Chengdu Airlines (UEG), Tibet Airlines (TBZ), China Eastern Airlines (CEA) Sichuan, Shenzhen Airlines (SHZ) and Lucky Air (LKY).

(LKY), the Kunming-based carrier expects to invest up to 1.05 billion yuan in the joint venture (JV) and will own up to 35%. Yunnan Xiangpeng Investment Company, Ltd and Chengdu Communications Investment Group Company, Ltd. will hold 45% and 20% stakes in the new airline with 1.35 billion yuan and 600 million yuan, respectively.
Based at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, the proposed airline will be a low cost carrier (LCC) operating domestic and international flights.

Hainan Airlines (HNA) said that the new proposed Shenniao Airlines aims to enhance its presence in Sichuan Province and increase its market shares in the region, so as to make profits. Shenniao Airlines becomes the latest in a series of new Chinese airlines launched by the (HNA) Group in recent years. Others include Fuzhou Airlines (FZH) in Fujian province, Urumqi Airlines (URQ) in the Xinjiang region, and GX Airlines (GXB) in Guangxi region. It has also created a new passenger airline in Shanghai, with the expansion of former cargo carrier Yangtze River Airlines (YTH).

(HNA) Group subsidiary, Yangtze River Airlines (YTH) looks toward international expansion in 2017 as China’s outbound passenger travel continues to grow. (YTH), the Shanghai-based carrier plans to take delivery of 2 Boeing 787s, which Hainan Airlines (HNA) expects to introduce in 2017. (HNA) raised its stake in Yangtze River Airlines (YTH) from 0.37% to 11.6% in July.

Last year, (YTH) was transformed from Yangtze River Express, a cargo carrier that launched in 2002, and operated a fleet of 23 freighters on >40 domestic and international routes.

Yangtze River Airlines (YTA) currently operates 6 Boeing 737-800 passenger airplanes on 21 domestic routes. It established Shanghai as its main operating base and Shenzhen as another domestic base with passenger boardings of 600,000.

By 2020, (YTA) plans to expand to 35 passenger airplanes and transport 6.6 million passengers.
